Well its bank holiday Sunday and my wife comes decides that the garden could do with a bit of a makeover and coerces me into driving out to the garden centres....deep joy! So car loaded up with plants, compost, gravel etc. I mentioned having lunch and as we were near Chigwell, I suggested trying out The Kings Head, which i had heard that it had just been bought by Alan Sugar's son, only to find that it was closed for refurbishment. We considered the Bluebell just a few yards up the road, but being very popular I new that it would be fully booked and I wasn't wrong, travelling along and being diverted due to many of the back road being closed, we ended up at the Two Brewers, Now I've known about this establishment when it was just a pub and up until Sunday I had never been in there. They have had many refurb's over the years and has evolved into a reasonable pub/restaurant, not quite a gastropub yet. Now down to the main reason for stopping off here, you could choose from either the main menu or from the their Sunday menu, we chose from the latter and chose the home made fennel and roast vegetable soup, the flavours of both the fennel and roast vegetables were quite distinctive when hitting the taste buds, main courses consisted of roast pork and rolled roast rib of beef, My wife enjoyed the pork very much, as it was moist and cooked just right, not hard and tough like some restaurants serve it. The rolled rib of beef seemed to transform itself into roast topside, which although was cooked medium-well (not my preferred choice) was quite palatable, considering my taste buds were expecting a different cut, but I wasn't in the frame of mind to bring this to the attention of the attentive staff. On perusing the dessert menu we both opted for the Eaton mess, strawberries, whipped cream and crushed meringue drizzled in a strawberry ju/coolie (okay sauce), not sure what happened to the strawberries though, I found about three possibly four thin slices of what may have formed part of a strawberry, perhaps they should rename it 'Chigwell Mess' That aside the establishment does tend to leave the likes of Ember Inns etc in the shade and price wise its on par with them. read more
