However, this charming Fullers pub, directly opposite the University of West London is a lovely find. A solid addition to the chain, with a clean and open bar, friendly staff and good selection. There's ample seating inside as well as out. The 'secret garden' is a great size, a few twists and turns out the back door. In addition to the 'zen' buddas and water features calming the atmosphere, there's also a massive outdoor TV - which must be great when there's a game on. As tradition (not that I know how/why it began) this place sells Thai food. I didn't sample it myself, but I could certainly smell it with the kitchen backing off to the garden. Overall a good pub and I'd pop in again on a sunny day if I was in the area.

The effect is to look very gloomy as you walk in, until your eyes adjust. There are, as others have said, lots of tables. The food was fine, although there was no real ale on our visit. Bar staff were OK too, but my main gripes were that the music was a bit intrusive and the tables had obviously not been wiped for a while, and I don't like surfaces with gloopy blobs on them if I'm about to eat. All in all, it's OK, but I don't feel like I want to rush back.

The food is very well done and as a place it is perfectly suited for daytime hanging out. As one might expect from its location they show football matches. It is a good, relatively genteel place to watch games, particularly if you are an Arsenal fan.

Although there are many great pubs in this area, this is one of my favorites.

I've stayed at the Orange Tree, in the 13-room inn/hotel above the pub. I've eaten in the pub, the English breakfast that comes with an overnight stay, but I've not chosen the pub as a place to hang out (and wouldn't with so many interesting Richmond pubs along the Thames). The Orange Tree, as a place of lodging, is nicely maintained and stylish. The room was clean with a sizable entry space, a good sized bathroom, and even had a bit of design-y flair. I was relieved to find that my room, though up several flights of stairs, didn't look out over the main street; I suspect that would have been a loud, busy room. Mine was neither. Orange Tree is very well located in Richmond, almost across from the train station (or tube) that'll take you back to central London. It's also a short walk to the waterfront or, in the other direction, a heartier (but easy and flat) walk to Kew Gardens. By the time I stayed at Orange Tree I was tiring of the full English Breakfast but have to admit they did a nice job of it. We ordered our choices off a menu and the pub was quiet and empty at breakfast time - perfect. The nicest compliment I could bestow on a place of lodging is saying that I'd stay there again. As long as I could get a room that doesn't face the front I'd happily stay at Orange Tree again.
