Don't let those gas pumps outside fool you! I once again found myself in Rowlett visiting friends and this was the first place Jerry took me for lunch. When he said these were the best gas station tacos he wasn't lying! Open 24/7, Twisted Trompo is a gas station Mexican restaurant that specializes in Mexican street style tacos. They share the same building with the Chevron convenient store which takes up a third of the building. Right outside are the gas pumps. The interior is nicely decorated with bright color, nice booths, tables and chairs. What draws your attention right away are the large plexiglass window openings that show off their state of the art. You'll also notice the large pieces of meat standing vertically on large skewers. In the context of Mexican cuisine, trompo refers to a vertical rotisserie. Meat is skewered and turned slowly as it cooks with the outer layers being shaved off for orders. Their tacos are made from scratch with their authentic Mexican marinade. They also serve breakfast items, quesadillas, tortas, burritos, a salad and a variety of snacks. Menu choices were simple with many combo options. I had to try their trompo meat so I ordered the 3 taco combo. You also get a large cup of mexican rice and refried beans. The rice was nicely flavored with some peas. Yom Yom Yom. The refried beans were also nicely cooked. The made from scratch street style taco flour tortillas complemented the heroes on my tray. The chicken was on par, but the steak and barbacoa were outstanding! The single thin slice of steak was succulent and juicy. Dressed with the fresh onions, cilantro and some of their green hot sauce... Yom Yom Yom Yom! The shredded pieces of the barbacoa were seasoned perfectly and again, wrapped in the tortilla, garnished with onions, cilantro,.. Yom Yom Yom Yom! Even Nick's lengua (beef tongue) was tender and flavorful. So don't let this gas station restaurant fool you. Some of the best food are found in hole-in-the-walls. This was no exception. It reminds me of the humble beginnings of Hoover's Blue Pacific. It's too bad Twisted Trompo isn't here. What a great place to find great food 24/7! read more

I've been a few times now and I'm just not impressed with the food here. The breakfast is decent. That's why I give two stars. But their trompo meats are super dry, chewy, and lack flavor. Like someone else mentioned, it seems as though the cuts of meat are of lower quality. Sadly, will leave this place off my list of good taco joints. read more

The restaurant is very close to my house and I used to order from here all the time. I don't really go anymore because every time I do the prices get higher and the portions get smaller. The food is pretty average overall for fast food. The trompo tacos are my favorite. This place is open 24 hours. We were skeptical since they're connected to chevron gas station but the steak and chicken tacos were delicious. Order Time: 12:20 Received: 12:45 Waited in the drive-thru for over 20 minutes. I ordered elotes and chips w/queso. One person in front of me- how does it take that long?? Elotes were corn with a glob of mayo and a jalapeño. No butter, salsa, or cheese. Some of the worst ive ever had. Chips were fine but salty. Queso was not bad. The food arrives quickly here. Think of it as more of a fast food style place. Our group ordered tacos, burritos, and quesadillas. The tacos I think were good, but not at the level of authentic street tacos you find at other DFW restaurants. The burritos and quesadillas I think are some of the better things they serve. The burritos come with meat, beans, and rice and a side of chips or fries. The quesadillas are good whether you choose a meat or go for veggie! One thing I think is very worthwhile is their aguas frescas. The girl at the counter said they are made fresh (not powder) and the agua de Jamaica definitely tastes like it! I have a previous review on here about how much I love this place, but here is the updated as of today 8/2/23. Customer service is complete garbage. Food is good when it is hot. Atmosphere that is a laugh, it's a gas station. It is what you would expect. I am a regular at this Twisted Trompo Garland. I get their twisted fries on a regular basis. I love them. The consistency of the food is never the same. Today, no cotiga cheese, the queso was on the bottom of the to go box, the fries were cold and flavorless, the meat was hard and cold. But the crazy customer service is consistent as hell. I have been having a hell of a time with their manager about ranch. Fries and ranch, they just go together, especially loaded fries. Their manager, Carlos, is ridiculous, he has spoken to me on several occasions about paying for ranch, he wants .50 per 1 oz of ranch. I don't have a problem with this. I am already paying $10.61 plus tip and sure tack on another $1 for some ranch no problem. But their online ordering does not allow them to charge for any ranch, it is not an option. My mom went and got our food today and he kept her there arguing with her for 15-20 minutes. I do have a fix for this problem. I will not be returning. I called today to speak to the manager, I was told it is Carlos. In the middle of the call, we will say that the call dropped, yeah sure. But I also got no call back from the manager after the disabled call. He acts like he knows me by name and that I am such a problem. My phone number is on the receipt. But still no call back. Bad thing is I really like their food and it is so close to our office. Such a shame. read more

The food here is SO delicious. I've never tried anything I didn't love. My family came from out of town last weekend and wanted to eat there twice in 3 days! I happily obliged them! The only reason I'm giving it 4 stars instead of 5 is that sometimes the orders can be a little inconsistent. You can't always count on the same condiments being provided with your orders (like the grilled onions for the tacos are sometimes left out) or things like fresh avocado is sometimes left off a salad. Those finishing touches are the best parts of the orders & if they could just get the consistency down, this place would be unbeatable!!! I recommend it to everyone I know! read more

I got a little concerned when I realized it was a taco place inside a gas station... that being said the tacos were good and tasty, service was a little awkward, since the cashier clearly hispanic with a heavy accent and a Hispanic name tag started throwing some Spanish words, so I started talking to him in Spanish and he immediately switch to a broken English, so I didn't know what language he preferred to use . I tried this place a year or two ago and wasn't impressed, so I was hesitant to stop by but I was starving. This place is attached to a gas station. Though I'm sure you could eat inside, I went thru the drive thru. I saw the menu had been updated, adding new taco variations to the menu like tacos de birria & tacos de alambre. I've never heard of alambre so I asked the kind woman working the drive thru about them & she was super helpful in explaining what it all entails. I decided to give them a try & got the 3 tacos de alambre plate. For 3 tacos you can only choose 1 meat, so I opted for al pastor. For those who are curious the alambre taco comes with the meat of choice, tomato, grilled onion & is topped with a jalapeño slice. Cheese is optional. You also get a side of raw onion & cilantro, lime and the two typical salsas. Since I ordered the plate it also came with rice and refried beans. The flavor of everything was muuuuch better than the last time I've had them. The meat was juicy, rice was cooked to perfection instead of being gummy & the beans though I'm usually not a fan, also tasted good. I just wasn't thrilled with my experience here. It was very okay. I asked the lady in the drive-thru what she recommended. Half the time I couldn't hear her and the other half she couldn't hear me. When I finally decided to jusg choose something off the menu (2 steak and 1 trompo tacos) I paid and waited about 15 minutes in my car for them. There was nobody waiting in line and I was the only one. That was pretty frustrating and the lady wasn't very friendly. She didn't smile. She was just kinda there. The tacos were alright. I LOVED the green sauce they came with. It was super spicy and added great flavor. There were a bunch of inedible bits in the tacos with an off texture, leading me to believe the quality of the meat wasn't great. Overall, very okay. I'll probably come back and try again. Good food but horrible service at the drive thru never coming back again unfortunately. On December 19 around 11:50PM I got 5 queso birria tacos. Usually they come with 2 salsas. I always ask for 2 red ones because it usually comes with one red and one green. When I got my food I had a red one and a green one. I tried to tell the girl at the window after she gave me my food but she saw me waving and walked away anyways. I waited for her come back to the window and she never did. I backed up to the drive thru speaker to let them know I wanted a red salsa and that I would give the green one back. She tells me my 5 TACOS only come with one salsa. I told her I would pay for the extra one, that it was no issue for me. She then ignores me again and leaves me talking to myself on the speaker. I have to go inside now and I asked for a manager. She calls a manager named Brian to the front register and as I am explaining what happened she is standing next to Brian giggling and smirking and trying to cut me off as I am speaking. Seems like there is now respect towards costumers and seems like the "manager" Brian has no authority over his employees. NEVER AGAIN COMING HERE. I use to come at least twice a week but I'll rather keep my dignity and take my business elsewhere. read more

Huge fan of this place! Love the quality and taste of the meats they serve (especially the trompo). The food tastes very authentic and flavorful. My go to is either a trompo quesadilla or twisted trompo fries. If I have a big appetite I'll get both lol. You will not regret coming here if you want GOOD tacos/Mexican food. Wow! I used to eat tacos at this stand before the renovation and let me say, what an upgrade! It's a full fledged restaurant connected to a Chevron gas station convenience store. There's a drive thru, you can either order while you're getting gas, call ahead and have them bring it out to you, or eat inside. It's actually pretty nice and not weird at all. And the causal vibe of everything makes it feel super easy to eat alone! If you dine in, order at the counter and they'll bring the food to your table. I tried their tacos and elotes. Need to go back to try their Twisted fries which I've heard is a major draw. Taco Tuesday special!! 4.99 for 3 taco plate which comes with rice and beans, and a 24 ounce fountain drink only after 4 PM. I tried two chicken and one steak. A bit on the salty side but wasn't greasy and a great portion of meat. Came with semi grilled onions, raw onions, cilantro, a like, and red (spicy) and green sauce (extra spicy!!). I'm not sure how much a single taco is, my guess is that's it's around $1.50 as the 3 taco plate with rice beans and drink is usually $7.99. They also have tortas, quesadillas, burritos, and breakfast tacos! The elotes was disgusting, tasted like they might have added some weird queso mix over the corn and it was totally off putting. Plus, my corn was clearly over cooked as it was so chewy that it stuck to my teeth and had several brown kernels, not yellow. Never would've guessed this place existed inside the Chevron gas station! Tables are clean and decor is definitely not your typical gas station taqueria. It's very inviting. Customer service is very good and food is prepared quite fast even on a Sunday afternoon. Three of my family members have tried this place and we all agree the tacos are quite delicious. *Tacos al pastor are your typical trompo tacos and the meet is seasoned perfectly. *If you like lengua, it seems to me a favorite amongst my family. *Barbacoa is juicy and tender. *Chicharrón wasn't a favorite, but it's not bad. It's chicharrón in green salsa. A bit soggy for tacos. *The beans are tasty and go perfectly with the tacos. The rice is the typical Mexican style rice. No Tex-mex rice here, baby! *the food is nicely plated. No plastic baskets in this place. You know what I'm talking about! This place was very smart about appearance. Been to this place now about 20 or 30 times and I love it. Rated 4 stars because everything I order something and ask for no cilantro it seems they'll throw a pound of cilantro on it. I only ask because I'm allergic to cilantro... But regardless I love the twisted trompo fries with no cilantro! And the americano and regular(trompo and ham) tortas are freaking great! I've had pretty much everything on the menu everything I've had is good. I'd probably wouldn't suggest ordering the trompo at night past 9PM, it seems dry and same with the steak. The chicken quesadillas are a little over priced for the quantity of quesadillas you get. But the Tortas and twisted fries are a fair price. The twisted fries theyll occasionally go light on the queso so I'd suggest ordering it with extra cheese! read more

I'll give them 4 stars because I've had street tacos on the streets of Mexico and in the valley of South Texas and it's a different vibe.... but as far as tacos in the DFW go, Twisted Trompo can definitely hold their own. I get a variety so I can see what taco places do which meat best, but this was hard to decide here. They were all good. The al pastor was crispy on the outside but tender on the inside. The barbacoa was . The steak lacked a little seasoning by itself, but when you add lime and salsa, it was probably my favorite. I did have to ask for limes and for salsa, so if you grab it to-go, make sure you check for those if that's your thing. The red salsa is spicier than it looks and a little goes a long way. The green is less spicy by comparison. Both are delicious and freshly made in house, the perfect compliment to your tacos. The beans were ok. The rice was very lackluster, in my opinion. I'd be happy with just the tacos, no sides. It's a little overpriced, but not bad. They have a great Taco Tuesday special - a 3 taco plate with rice, beans, and a margarita for $9.99. Both times I've been, the cashier has been really friendly and seemed to enjoy their job. The kitchen has windows so you can watch them make your food, which is pretty cool too. First time trying this place last night on a Friday around 7:30pm and everything was really nice. Clean restaurant connected to the gas station, which made me kind of unsure at first but once you walk in the environment/decor/atmosphere feels very inviting and interesting. We had help picking out some menu items, but we definitely wanted to try the street tacos. I was not disappointed with the Trompo! It had lots of flavor, crispy and very delicious. All together we spend about $18 with drinks included to feed two adults with an appetite - and still took out leftover loaded fries home! We will definitely be back to try the quesadillas, lingua and breakfast menu! Used to go to 24 Hour Tacos and every time I eat there I don't feel very good afterwards.... but had no problem eating here! Flavor was on point and the place was very clean and inviting. The waiter even came by while we were finishing up to ask how everything was and give us more suggestions for the next time we come! My family will definitely be back - and I'm bringing my friends with me too! Hopefully this will be our new street taco spot as it's also closer to home for us.
