Breakfast spots- there are many in Auckland... We are spoilt / strangled for choice. But Twisted Tomato has definitely broken into my top 10. We enjoyed a delicious eggs benny (perfectly poached eggs) and a tasty big breakfast. Known as "Mrs Twisted" and "Mr Bene" on the menu- the only thing I can fault them on, is not having enough on the plate. But give them credit for their "quality" food. The eggs benny (Mr Bene) was served on a tasty potato hash cakes - the mustard hollandaise was perfectly balanced, creamy and worked well with the rest of the dish. The big breakfast (Mrs Twisted) included halloumi - everything was cooked well and the plate was (licked) clean . We tried the mango/peach drink - it was quite sweet and had desiccated coconut through it. Not my cup of tea - but my friend enjoyed it and was keen to try the other fruit smoothie blends. I ordered my favourite Storm and India tea (they have a few on shelf)- Coconut Chai which they served with almond milk. The perfect breakfast addition ! Overall - the only fault I could find, was that the portion sizes were quite small. But the food was delicious - they serve some premium tea and car parking in the area is free on the street. Booked a table for 11 people two weeks before Mother's Day, only to arrive and find the cafe had no idea what to do with us. Staff seemed uninterested that we even had a booking and a young staff member was left to "sort us out" while clearly stressed and unsupported. When we asked to speak to a manager, they refused to come and talk to us. After waiting 25 minutes, the owner finally showed us "our table" and walked away... except the people sitting there were still waiting for the food they had ordered. It was obvious the cafe had no proper booking system and had filled tables with walk-ins instead. A quick "sorry" means very little when you've clearly made no effort to honour bookings people made well in advance, especially on Mother's Day. Really disappointing experience and unfortunately I wouldn't recommend this cafe. read more

Food was superb as usual. We had an omelette & the pea fritters. Excellent. Coffee was just OK. Service is always mediocre but today it was practically non existent. Sat out the back as we have 2 small dogs. read more

Well as the former owners Hayden & Tamara sadly say good bye to New Zealand and their fantastic little Pt Chevalier local, Twisted Tomato. Its with great sadness that I write this. I hear the premise has been bought and turned into just another cafe in the area, what a sad time for the neighbourhood. On their last night we booked our group of 14 in to enjoy the last opportunity to eat their scrumptious fares. The best entree on the night was without a doubt the mushroom risotto. There was some envy at the table from those that did not have it. For mains I had the snapper with mussels which was fresh, tasty and perfectly presented . There were four desserts on the blackboard, I chose the Sticky Toffee Pudding (which I remember having on my first visit one year ago) served this time with Black beer icecream. The pomegranate and molasses meringue shards decorating it were absolutely exquisite. The service was outstanding, too. Our meals arrived with precision timing regardless of the size group. Tamara treated us more like friends than customers. I am very sad to say I can't go back. I will watch with anticipation for their return to the Auckland foodie scene. What a great little cafe tucked into a not-so-appeasing looking area! One girl was serving the entire restaurant, and she was on top of it! I had the avocado quinoa toast, yummy! My bf got a bacon and egg bagel with a bacon chutney. He said it was a new flavor but surprisingly tasty. read more

We were stoked to find the twisted tomato a while back and it became our go-to relaxed local bistro. So consistent, service like you were long friends, food that had you coming back for their regular trusty's and the creative occasional special. Alas, the original owners have moved on as we found out on the weekend. We were so shocked when we realised, we couldn't bear to turn tails and mooch into despair.... So we gave it a crack anyhoo. It's really now just another cafe that tries to do bistro fare on the evenings. No real flair or nous to be honest. Scotchy still has the beautiful flavour from their grill, but their duck fat potatoes, were shall we say par boiled. Needed another 100 degrees and 15 mins I'd say. Both the steak and salmon were swimming in creamy sauces... Too much, little finesse. 40 mins wait for mains (no entrees) was also too long. The beauty of a tight local bistro is a quick turnaround... Gutted we've lost the option. 2 stars only because the steak grill still rocks. read more

It's a little cafe hidden away in the area! Lovely indoor seating and a small number of outdoor seating. Menu has quite a lot of variety and I have trouble choosing my meal as there are so many j wanna to try!! Ordered a smoothie with is nice and a field mushroom with truffle oil and polenta chips, but I can hardly taste the truffle...overall it's a nice cafe and with okay food... read more

So when your partner comes home and all week he's been throwing out ideas for Friday night dinner like ostro or moochowchow but then says lets go to this new place twisted tomato my heart sank a little at the name. But I was pleasantly surprised, it's small and intimate and the food is pretty amazing. I would recommend the duck and the blue cheese dumplings their pretty special. After 3 courses we were pretty full and I was sadly thinking I don't have room for dessert until the waitress said sticky pudding to share. We jumped on the idea and it was beautiful! I really recommend going here for a quiet night with lovely warm winter food. read more

This rated as one of my favourite neighbourhood restaurants and definitely a memorable meal from 2014, but it's changing hands soon and we'll all have to wait and see if it continues or morphs into something else. read more

Perfection. The menu is not extensive but you will not be disappointed. Beautifully presented food, great flavours and excellent service. This restaurant can't hold too many people but does take bookings. Its quiet ambience means you will have no trouble hearing people at your table! read more

Well we wanted somewhere different that neither of the two couples had been to.. so took a gamble on a suburban auckland restaurant - and was really stunned by the menu, food and service - it was a real treat. Between the 4 of us we had 2 Starters, 2 Entrees 4 Mains, 1 Salad, 2 Desserts 1 Cheese, 1 Bottle of wine, 3 Glasses of wine, and 2 bottles of water - and the bill was $333. We were outside on a windy and wet auckland evening but the covering and heaters made for a warm and pleasant experience. highly recommended - will come back here again. read more

Have posted this elsewhere but I was so impressed I thought I would share. Was fully booked when we rang for my partners birthday, however the lovely staff said they would make us up a table outside. When we got there the sun was low in the sky and quite blinding - so instead of having us seated outside squinting away they gave us a table inside. It just got better and better from there on! The service was excellent, attentive, warm and not intrusive. Apertisers were delicious, entree's were divine and the mains were wonderful! Good portion sizes and all beautifully presented. The Chef is talented. A well appointed wine list added the perfect touch. At this stage we were happily satisfied customers not needing anything else. However as everything that we had eaten was so good we thought maybe a wee look at the dessert menu was in order. What we ordered, even though we were quite full was devoured as it was dangerously good! The owner (Im sure her name was Tamara) was delightful and a wonderful host with a genuine smile. I will be recommending Twisted Tomato to all my friends and family and will be going back to try the rest of the menu and soak up the atmosphere. read more
