You order at the counter when you walk in and then pay and get a number. A successful lunch on a Sunday! Staff is friendly & funny, even if just a few sentences we had an amusing interaction with a gentleman that was clearing the tables. Food was great, however the real treat here (for us) is the variety of homemade pickles. Personally, I could make a meal of the bread and butter ones, but they are all great. The service is good, basically go and order at the counter, get your name (I think we were one of the Golden Girls) and wait for your food to arrive. Such a cute spot! I was visiting Arlington with my family for the weekend and we popped in here for dinner on a Thursday night. What I like about this place is that you can also get several varieties of pickles. They actually come sliced but you can choose from spicy to normal and the different brines that they have. **Tip-shaming Alert** While my overall experience here was a good one, it should be noted that this is a counter service restaurant, and patrons are put on the spot (digitally) to tip upon pre-paying for the meal. For those who are unfamiliar with my opinion on this practice, I despise it. I first remember experiencing it at a drive-thru window, and it has popped up more and more ever since. These days, the option to tip regularly appears on the iPad at the cash register ... in the presence of the person who would receive the gratuity. I am hardly opposed to tipping. In fact, I've gotten myself into budget trouble by over-tipping at times. But when you make a regular hourly wage and you simply complete the task of entering my order in a computer, you have not earned my extra hard-earned dollars. Now, to the restaurant review... This place is fun. I'm not sure of the theme, and perhaps that's on purpose, but the interior features picnic style tables, a faux RV and restrooms that resemble port-a-potties. While I was appreciative of the effort to make the restrooms entertaining, it would have been nice had there been paper towels in the dispenser. At noon, I'm fairly certain that they had not been slammed with people washing their hands. This was simply an oversight by the management. Order at the counter and pick it up when they call the whimsical Hollywood name they've given you (I was Optimus Prime). The folks here are nice. The young lady working the counter was distracted, I believe, because I had to repeat my order to her multiple times. Fortunately, everything came out correctly ... except the 'pink' in my burger was grey. One of the kitschy hooks here is the house made pickles. Though they did not taste like they were brined in the kitchen, I was thrilled to be able to load my burger with the amount of dill slices of my choosing. Once more, fun. The burger is good. It was cooked beyond medium, which is the default order here (according to the menu), but it was still juicy and flavorful. The fries are cut and fried in-house. I'm not usually a fan of fresh fries because most places tend to serve them limp. This joint, however, pulled it off wonderfully. Sodas here are a private brand that uses only sugar. The fountain root beer is pretty good. Despite that the menu said they offered an IPA, the young lady at the counter looked at me crooked when I attempted to order one. Picture an open-faced knife + fork burger with wagyu beef, aged cheddar, truffle aioli, garlic mushrooms, bacon, dark beer sauce, crispy tobacco onions. Yep, Go big. I tried to eat it without a knife and fork, but I couldn't do it. The beef was cooked perfectly med-rare, as requested, and all the ingredients worked so well together, and the flavor was fantastic! My wife ordered the lots of shroom burger, med-rare, and she loved it. We split an order of hand-cut fries, and onion strings. Well, I meant to "share", but the onion strings were so good, I ate them before sharing. Sorry babe! I did try a couple of the fries, and they were good as well. My wife had a couple of Twisted Mule cocktails, and she loved them. Spacious location! I've been to the Twisted Root in Deep Ellum and enjoyed the food and ambience, so when I saw we were close to one in this part of town we decided to make it our dinner on our first night of our vacation. The employees were very friendly, it was nice the Managers also did a stroll by of all the tables to check on everyone and even cleared some plates while doing so. The only reason for 4 stars was truly my burger being over cooked and dry, with it being over cooked it made it seem like it lacked in seasoning...i know, even with everything on it, it seemed to me missing something! The cheese fries were okay, my boyfriend wasn't much of a fan. I enjoyed them. He enjoyed all the pickles offered. Im not a pickle person so I didn't have any. It looks like it has been here a while but that may just be the aesthetics. Now to the food. I got a burger on top of lettuce. That's been my thing here lately. I don't usually go out of my way for a vegan burger but will definitely go back to the nearest Twisted Root as soon as humanly possible. The homemade veggie patties have amazing taste and texture that harkens back to a time when restaurants didn't rely on Impossible and Beyond products to satisfy the plant eaters. The bun, sauce, and toppings were carefully selected to compliment this burger and it wouldn't be complete without a side of their house-chopped fries or chips. One of my favorite parts about coming here was the giant vats of sweet, savory, and spicy pickle chips you can pile on your plate at no additional charge. The soda and iced tea options were also a brand I've never heard of that seemed like you were getting real flavors and came sugar instead of high fructose corn syrup.
