Extremely disappointed with Anytime Fitness. I had been a member for nearly 2 years. I had…read moretemporarily frozen my membership for 1 month due to illness, and resumed payments after that month. But when the news headlines started indicating a VERY severe flu virus is now circulating w/ high hospitalization rates, I emailed the club to inquire about another temporary re-freeze, just until flu season ends. I have an underlying asthma condition, so respiratory viruses are serious for me. They declined. OK, fair enough. So I replied that I was "considering" terminating my membership to protect my health - but had not confirmed that. I was still thinking about it. The gym owner immediately terminated my membership, which startled me. I did not expect that. I later consulted my physician, who advised that it is fairly low risk for me as an asthma patient to work out in a KN95 mask, esp if combined w/a flu vaccination. So I emailed the club owner again -- a mere 2 weeks after our previous contact -- and requested to be reinstated, confirming my previous student rate that I had been paying since January 2024 and attaching my student ID. I followed up 3 times before finally hearing back a week later. She replied that I would have to rejoin at the SIGNIFICANTLY higher current rate (plus annual security fee & maintenance fee). I asked if I could simply be grandfathered in, as I could not afford the higher rate as a student and my membership lapse had been very brief. She refused, citing increased expenses. So she would rather lose my ongoing monthly fees, even with her increased expenses, than reinstate me at my previous rate? That makes no sense to me. Esp because if I had never emailed about the possible re-freeze, I would STILL be paying that rate to this day!! As I said to her, I regret ever having sent that email, or I would still have an active membership. I've just learned today that I qualify for a different Sonoma gym for a SIGNIFICANTLY LOWER rate than even my discounted Anytime Fitness student rate, through Active & Fit Direct (which this AF gym location does not partner with). So AF is losing my ongoing membership to their competition -- which is also open 24 hours AND offers classes. A much better value. As for this AF gym facility itself, I have few complaints, other than unlike the Petaluma and Santa Rosa AF gyms, it lacks secure lockers, they recently welded the windows shut near the cardio section, (eliminating fresh air circulation during flu season), and 2 of their 3 restrooms do not have paper towel dispensers, only hot air blowers (those have been proven to be unsanitary as they blow out fecal germs from recirculated restroom air). But I rarely had an issue with the gym equipment or anything else. The other members are respectful and the gym is kept reasonably clean. My review is primarily for this customer service fiasco.

I've been practicing 30 plus years everywhere from Los Angeles to San Francisco to New York. The classes in big cities tend to be stricter, and take the same approach bikram himself takes when he teaches. Sonoma has only one or two teachers who take this approach and although everyone's complaining I have to say- for bikram lovers - the hard core teaching is amazing. You would not get upset at your personal trainer for pushing you, so why is this any different? I'm a person who needs extra help staying disciplined and a good, strict bikram teacher can be the best thing ever.

For weights, he was able to set up excellent workouts that utilized the great equipment in the resort gym. For HIIT, he set up some smoker circuit training in a nearby park and brought his own battle rope, TRX, sandbag, kettle bell and other goodies. Was amazing.
