Ten Thousand Villages is located in an old 3-story house and has a great selection of jewellery, servingware, statues, and other home décor global treasures. They are also quick to refill the complimentary coffee pots, which is a bonus. I guess they care as much for their customers as they do for the native artisans that they represent. The coffee with a conscience being served up here is flavourful and fortunately available for purchase upstairs.

When I inquired about my missing items at the Shawnessy store, the store associate actually raised her had to stop me from speaking, then demanded I empty my bag so she could see that I wasn't hiding the item. Another occasion, the store manager demanded to see the email from Michael's showing items were ready for pu up and when I showed a text version, she refused to accept it and demanded the original. When I explained that it was identical and that I didn't have the email on my phone, she said there was nothing she could do and walked away. I left feedback with the Customer Care line and received a call from the district manager for Calgary and Manitoba. I missed the call but returned her message within 2 hours. After 2 days of not hearing from her, I sent an email to her. I received a response after 2 days after that telling me that if " i wanted to connect with her, I could contact her during a few windows when she was free": The onus is not on me to chase her down, she stated in her initial phone message to me that she would " like to make it right". Ignoring me, then finally telling me to work around her availability is not making it right. Clearly, the poor service culture at Michaels does not fall far from the management tree. There is a reason why online companies like Temu offering similar products for a fraction of the price of Michael's are doing booming business. This type of shoddy customer disservice should not be rewarded by giving them business. See less

Retrieved all my clothes recently when I couldn't get a balance on my account after several attempts. I was told yesterday, that even though those clothes/accessories had sold, they had "expired" long ago and therefore NO balance was owing to me. For the record, I extended the time twice (once they extended it themselves-noted on an email- as their system was down and they were transitioning to a new system). My clothes and accessories were featured prominently on their website, on their mannequins, in their window displays and modelled/featured many many times on instagram, and I could see when some sold - so I question that they were "expired" as obviously they were very much still sellable. Regardless, they sold my items recently or in the last 3 months (many designer - Kate Spade, Club Monaco, Aritzia, BCBG, etc.) and kept 100% of the proceeds - sending me a pittance apparently for items that sold prior to expiry . Do not consign with this new owner! If you currently do - I would pull my stuff from that store and demand a full accounting of the transactions. I will be filling a complaint with the BBB this week. I had to give it a 1 start in order to post this review - but this new owner does not deserve any.

My friend wasn't exaggerating, every showcase, every shelf; every glassed cabinet was chockfull of lovely designer jewellery in the most spectacular designs. Here they carry some of the same designers as they do in Holt Renfrew but for a lot cheaper prices. But it didn't stop at jewellery there were beautiful globes of blown glass, intricately carved chopping boards that I would have hung rather than use and then my favourite an ethnographic object showcase in the far back featuring ceremonial objects from around the world. Here you can find original African Masks, fertility symbols from many countries, Native American antique pieces and authentic temple Buddhas. These objects were definitely market prices, you can buy these pieces for 4 times more on EBay, and here they are quite reasonable in price. Some of them have documentation too, so you know what village or tribe you are buying that object from. The service is tremendous, the people here know their stuff, they understand the precious cargo they carry. They are extremely present in helping you to see a piece or two, in my case more than 10. Whatever you need (wire, pliers, potential pendants, craft books, etc), it's all there. Just walking into this store and seeing all the shapes, colours, and materials (metal or plastic beads) got the creative juices flowing. Oh how I miss those days where giving your friends a custom made bracelet or necklace was a big deal, and that was their birthday present. I think I need to return to those days, even if it looks cheap.
