I've been searching for a stylist since moving to Iowa City last summer. Due to a family illness my appointment was switched to Cheri and I'm so happy that it was! Cheri is personable, experienced and actually listened to my suggestions. The "big reveal" was exciting. After highlighting, a deep moisture treatment and dry haircut, I'm very happy. I had the pleasure to a keratin treatment. It was a epic fail my hair was burned and damaged to the extreme. After spending about $350 plus for keratin treatment, I had to spend a lot more for products to try to save my hair. I had to go back to the same stylist and asked her for advise and she gave me a haircut to get rid of all the damaged hair and she did charge me for the haircut. The haircut that was given due to failed keratin treatment on my hair. Sorry, not recommending getting a keratin treatment in this place. On the other hand Ciara is my girl, she gives the best waxes and she is a sweetheart. Friendly and professional at the same time. read more

Very disappointed with the service at Twin Image Salon Spa in Iowa City. I am new to the Iowa City area and I made an appointment at Twin Image after someone had recommended it. I hadn't had my hair cut in a little while, so I was really looking forward to it. My favorite thing about getting my hair cut is having somebody wash my hair and massage my scalp, and my hairdresser at Twin Image didn't even do that!!! Quite honestly, I was shocked. She had started out by saying that she generally likes to cut long hair while it was dry, and I was okay with that as long as she was still going to wash and style it at some point. Then she proceeded to ask me to stand up so that she could cut my hair. I'm not sure about you, but I prefer to sit down and relax while getting my hair cut. In addition, I had seen other people drinking a glass of wine while getting their hair cut, and I wasn't even offered a glass of wine...or even water. I am pretty bummed because I really was hoping to make Twin Image my go to place for haircuts and styling. Also, I wanted to let you know that I do not normally leave reviews, but I wanted to share my experience because I was not satisfied. read more

Characterizing my reviews as negative is a cheap shot. Three stars is "A-OK," not "A-Not-OK," and two stars is "Meh, I've experienced better." My sons and I have been going here since 2009. I keep returning because other salons are simply not as good. Example: I went to Buzz in IC once since it was closer to my work, and the stylist, instead of putting just a clear shine on my hair, put a permanent dye on my hair without my permission. He said he thought I needed a push, but it looked terrible. I ended up going back to Carissa at Twin Image Salon to have her fix it. Lesson learned. My boys --teenage and college-aged--- like going to Karl because he's always up on the latest men's hair fashions. They also think that Karl's really cool and fun to talk to. And Karl squeezes my older son in whenever he comes into town from college. And I've gone to Carissa when I've had short hair and long hair. Currently, I have long hair with bayalage high lights, and I get compliments on it all the time. They are the best salon in town. Hands down. read more

Prices are competitive, especially for the quality of the salon. Front desk staff is very friendly and accommodating. Nice salon, good size, and very clean. They offer a ton of different services. Brooke did my hair and I couldn't be more happy with how it turned out. She gave me great advice on what color to go with and even curled my hair for free. I had never had such a nightmare of an experience at a hair salon prior to my visit at Twin Image. I just moved here from Los Angeles, and I chose Twin Image based on its acclaim from Salon Magazine and local news channels. Supposedly it's the best salon in Eastern Iowa, but based on my experience there, I cannot fathom why. I went in with my previous color formula from my old Aveda salon in southern California, so I thought it would be a painless transition. Boy, was I ever wrong. My hairstylist's name was Jackie, and she started off by sloppily putting color on my head. It got all over my face, and then somehow color was flung into my eye. My eye stung and it was very painful, and Jackie responded by handing me a towel--but the towel had color on it, so it only got more color all over me. She didn't take me to a sink or anything to try to help me get it out, and only got me a cup of water. As if this wasn't bad enough, she argued with me about how my old hairstylist did my color, and tried to convince me that her way would be better. When it finally came time to style my hair, the situation only got worse. I told her that I prefer not to have my hair straightened with a flat-iron, but with a blow dryer instead, and that I don't like to have a lot of product weighing down my hair. Apparently she didn't like that (or didn't listen), so she just finished my hair by doing absolutely nothing to it besides finger-combing it with a blowdryer and spraying hair spray all over it. My hair looked awful, so I asked her if she could re-blow dry it with a brush, and she said that normally that would be extra (seriously?) but that it was fine for now. This kind of language would normally indicate that she wouldn't charge me extra for this, but she did anyway and did not tell me. I was charged $25.00 extra for my hair to look like a bird's nest. She did try to take some of the many color spots off my face, but she rubbed my face so roughly with a washcloth I felt pain afterwards. I paid roughly $125.00 for this terrible experience. Obviously, I asked her for my hair formula back, and she said color got on it and wrote me up another one. I don't trust it, so I'm having my old hairstylist mail me another one. Luckily, the manager has since offered to refund me part of my money, so I definitely appreciate that. Bottom line: I will never go back to this salon. I'm sure the salon has better stylists (or at least I hope so), but I wouldn't recommend Jackie to anyone, friend or foe. read more

I can't attest to the other services offered at Twin Image, but I can say that bikini waxes with Ciara are awesome. She is friendly and immediately makes you feel at ease, even though you're half naked. Compared to other waxes I've had, her technique was quick and relatively painless. She kept the conversation going to help keep my mind off of the pain and acknowledged when certain spots were going to hurt. Overall, I couldn't believe how fast she worked and how little pain I experienced. Not to mention everything looked great! I'll definitely be returning to Twin Image for all of my waxing needs. read more

I've had the pleasure of working with two wonderful staff members at Twin Image. My former esthetician recommended Ciara for waxing when she was unavailable. After my first appointment with Ciara, I never went back to my former spa... She is wonderful!!! Even when I lived in major U.S. cities, I would book appointments with Ciara anytime I was in Iowa City & needed a wax. Brows, underarms, Brazilian, full leg... I've had it all with Ciara and have been really happy with both the process and the outcomes. She is incredibly quick and has great technique; beyond that, she's a doll!!! The second staff member that I adore is Laura. She is a wonderful massage therapist!!! If you're looking for a massage that is purely physical, Laura is great. It is relaxing, she has great skills, and she isn't afraid to dig in when you need it. I switched to Laura from a massage therapist that I saw for 7 years because Laura truly respects my body. She makes it known that I am the expert in what my body is needing/wanting, and she is an excellent mode of reaching that. If you're seeking other services during your massage (energy work, a lot of aroma therapy, tuning forks, etc.), Laura may not be your best choice. But, for the physical body, paired with tea tree oil for my head and neck, she is incredible; and for that, I see her regularly! read more

When my daughter got married we had our hair and makeup done at Twin Image and we were so pleased. Natural looking but made us feel special. My boyfriend and I went here to get our hairs done. He has been having a hair time finding someone that understands how to work with his type of hair. He is asian and so his hair isn't the easiest to work with. But the hair stylist Nick did a wonderful job! He took the time to listen to what my boyfriend wanted. Plus he also had experience with asian hair too thankfully. So he knew how to do it right. Now with me I tend to dye my hair a lot. I like fun and wild colors. But I accidentally fried my ends a little. But the lady which her name I can't remember. Also listened too me and just tried off the fried ends and even thinned out my really think hair lol. She was great the only problem I have is she charged me 40$ for just a little trim and thinning. I think that was a bit too pricy for my hair cut. I may not get my hair cut there again. But I know my boyfriend will be going back to Nick again lol. read more
