I've gone to stylists who lop off more than I've asked, who've forced a look on me that I didn't like but they insisted on, who burnt or damaged my hair by not trusting my opinion. Kelsey is a stand out in all regards. Kelsey is friendly, welcoming, and super professional. She listens to your opinion to help you achieve your vision. She's incredibly skilled, so I was more than happy to go with her direction and trust that she wouldn't steer me wrong with her suggestions: I was 1000% correct! I'd never dyed my hair before I met her, but she helped me slowly ease into fantasy colors- I never received more compliments on my hair than I did when she helped me sport pink and lavender hues! After I had my fun with those tones, I wanted something more natural. Kelsey nailed it! I feel so confident and happy about my look thanks to her expert styling! Whether you want something subtle and natural or you're looking for something bold and beautiful, you really can't go wrong with her!

I was impressed with the amount of time she took looking over my hair and asking lots of questions before even starting. My hair get's pretty shaggy and I loved how she thinned it so it lies better. I've been combing the same way for decades and she styled it a new way that made me feel younger. Kelsey is a Cedar Rapids native with several years experience specializing in cut and color in New York City. We are very fortunate to have someone with her level of skill right here in the NewBo district. I suggest you book her now before the word gets out and her client list fills up!

I wasn't overly thrilled with the salon I'd been frequenting since I moved here so when my friend mentioned he'd had a good experience here at Moods, I figured I'd give them a try. I made an appointment a week in advance through their online booking, which was super helpful to view the stylist bios and pricing before committing plus it sent me a few timely reminders via text. I arrived roughly 15 minutes ahead of my appointment and scored a parking spot right out front. Sammy was with another client so I had a short wait while she finished up and reset her station. After a quick chat to establish a game plan, I was off to the wash and back in the chair for what felt like the quickest haircut of my life. I swear it was about 30 minutes from chat to checkout! I really appreciated that she styled my hair how I'd be styling it at home so I was able to get a good sense of the cut before I left the salon. Again with curly hair, this makes a world of difference! Overall, I enjoyed my experience at Moods. Whatever happened in previous Yelp reviews, that was nowhere to be found on my visit. The space was inviting and the staff seem to be very experienced. I also thought my haircut was very affordable compared to other salons I've been to. Glad I took my friend's advice and will definitely be paying it forward if anyone asks. I even booked my next appointment as I left (something I never do!)

I'm a former stylist, with some barber training, which makes finding someone to cut my hair a challenge. Just as surgeons maybe shouldn't perform their own surgeries, I know when to let someone else cut my hair. 9am on a Thursday I walked in to Moods to a friendly sign asking me to put shoe coverings on (and mask up of course!). I liked this a lot. COVID has butchered the salon industry, so anything that a salon can do to up the sanitization game is huge. Moods Salon was spotless. Then I met Amber. Stylist roulette handed me a beautiful, friendly and enthusiastic ray of sunshine. (No really... you cannot ignore it.). From just a haircut perspective: once I stopped talking about "my hair" (we ALL do it..) she chimed in that she had originally attended barber school and was just shy of finishing when she transferred to cosmetology school to finish up. Oh Universe! Her skill showed this truth. I sit here writing this with the best grown out haircut I've ever had. Amber is going to be getting a call from me today, and I cannot express how good it feels to know I can count on another amazing haircut by an incredible woman.

I have also not been a very good owner of my hair with use of box dyes and (I can't believe I'm publicly admitting this) SunIn (yes, even as recently as the summer of 2020...I'm almost 40 here people...). Carrie was highly recommended to me from several friends and co-workers in and around the area. As long as I'm going all out in admitting my self inflicted hair disasters publicly to the world, I also suffer from chronic anxiety. One of my anxiety "tics" is picking. 90% of this picking tic occurs on my scalp. So now I'm also adding to more hair distress with my medical condition as well as my self destructive hair behavior. I'm really a fun person, I promise. Since the first moment that I sat down in Carrie's chair, she never made me feel embarrassed or self conscious about my hair, my scalp or even how I viewed myself in her mirror after getting my hair washed and comparing myself to Golam from Lord of the Rings. Since going to Carrie, my hair AND scalp have become intensely healthier and happier (minus my SunIn self disaster, which is important to know for this review.) Carrie recommended the best type of professional hair care products for my hair type, my scalp type and what to avoid. She has become so close to my hair that she can tell when I have had a lot of anxiety in my life just by my scalp. I have even begun to openly start a conversation with "HEY!! No anxiety for the last six weeks! Look at my scalp!" or "girl, watch out for the area around 10:48 and 4:23 on my head...let me tell you whats going on..." How AMAZING is it to have a hairstylist that HELPS you physically and mentally?! The SunIn fiasco...you guys remember that stuff from the early 90's? Well, I apparently remembered it and thought it was a good idea. Using this for a full day in the sun was not a good idea, nor did it bring the Sun In to my hair. In fact, this product fried the every loving crap out of my hair so badly I had to lose several inches of length to reach the healthier potions. Carrie knew that this would cause me to become anxious and prior to the inches coming off, we sat and talked about why it needed to be done and the process of getting my hair back to the healthy state that it was pre-self demise. What I'd like you take from my review are several things. I have openly admitted, publicly, for strangers to read for years to come about my chronic anxiety and the tic it comes with. This is embarrassing for me but I really want others who are coming here to read a review and make a decision about being styled be Carrie to know that she is naturally comforting, sincere and genuine. She has helped me get my hair back to the length I love, with hair that is so healthy and beautiful that I FEEL beautiful. I love the atmosphere of her salon, it isn't overpowering but rather comforting. The stylists who rent her chairs are amazing people as well. Listening to them talk to their clients, you can tell that they have been with them for years. If you don't want a stylist who cares about the health of your hair AND you, then don't go to Carrie because that is exactly who you're going to get. **the picture is the first cut post SunIn, loss of 3/4 inches and you can tell I feel AMAZING!!! All because of Carrie!**
