My wife and I were told about this sub shop by our PNC bank representative. We had the hot prime rib hero with sweet peppers. It was amazing. The beef was very tender and the bread was light and airy, not heavy or dense. I'm not usually into peppers but these peppers ate made in house by the shop owner and were outstanding. We also had the French fries, which were also excellent. They were crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, with just the right amount of salt. The shop is not very large and has about a half dozen tables or so for eating in. Each table sits about 4 people. The store is well lit and very clean. There are clean restrooms for your convenience. We enjoyed the food so much, we went back a week later. I had the fried chicken sandwich. The chicken was crispy, moist and tender. The owner is proud of his business and he should be. He told us he's been in business almost forty years It appears that he has a loyal following with the local residents. Many of the customers addressed him by his name. We will definitely be going back. We highly recommend this sandwich shop. read more

Turtles, has been in Hagerstown town since 1987 and I see why! The owner took our order and delivered it he was very kind and even cut our sub for us. We wanted a quick snack as we traveled from Baltimore to Pittsburgh and this didn't disappoint. The shop was clean and in a nice shopping center with plenty of parking. The sandwich was on a perfect hoagie with Italian meats and almost a small salad on top. The star was herbs, oil and peppers. Ahhh, this place doesn't disappoint. All I have to say is once you've had one of their subs with their specially seasoned lettuce, you will be hooked (unless your taste buds are malfunctioning). Don't let the appearance of the place fool you whenever you walk in- it's definitely a simple looking place but it's clean and the owners are friendly people who humbly know that their subs are to die for and are always happy to see their customers . This Hagerstown staple always brings a smile to my face with its delicious food. I first visited Turtles when I was kid and recently visited after a much too long absence. Eating one of Turtles' cheesesteak sandwiches is like being a kid again. The steak is cooked just right, the bread is soft and fluffy and the provolone adds the right amount of cheesy goodness. I usually opt for plain lettuce on my sandwiches, but Turtles also offers "seasoned" lettuce which takes your sandwich or salad up another notch with a tasty dressing. Not only is the food outstanding, but so is the service. Since childhood, the owner always greets and talk to me like I'm a member of his family. The turkey sub is HUGE! Inside this container is a fork! No wrapping up in paper here, it is literally covered in lettuce, tomatoes, pickles and sweet peppers. You can't hold half of it with one hand and I'm 6'3" tall with basketball hands. This is a nice little mom and pop shop tucked away in this suburban shopping center. The owner and staff are extremely nice willing to please. The fries and wings are ordinary, but their subs are OUTSTANDING. Highly recommend! read more

How long should it take to make a sandwich? Called in an order in the late afternoon and was told to wait 30 mins... already a long time but I thought they might be busy. After arrival, I waited inside another 20 minutes for two hot subs and one cold sub. Secondly, they dress the cheese steak with the most delicious seasoned lettuce and sweet peppers that you've ever tasted. Third, they are just damn good. A nice little local eatery. The staff are super friendly, the restaurant is nice and clean, the food was good, and the prices are very reasonable. Another plus is that they have a soda fountain where you can refill your own sodas. You don't always see that in small places. Their subs, while not huge, were pretty good too. The only suggestion I might have for them is to kick their fries up a notch. While the fries were good, they were pretty basic, so you guys should come up with your own seasoning for them, which you likely would do very well with. If not, you could at least have some crab spice, mayo, or vinegar standing by for them. But that's about my only suggestion. Everything else was pretty solid. Oh! They have their own seasoned lettuce. What, you ask? Seasoned lettuce. Well I've never heard of such a concoction, you say!?!! And to all that, I say: l hate lettuce. In fact, I liken it to chewing on random-plant-infused water... You know, as if lettuce were a physical miracle that could turn water into a solid without a reduction in temperature, all the while making it taste like your front lawn. BUT! I gave it a go. The owner opened 30 minutes later than advertised, but we where in the area and we waited cause the reviews. We ordered a cheesesteak which was tasty, soft bread, and good amount of cheese. I wanted to like it more but it was just ok. The wings I would not recommend, the where crispy and cooked well and the blue cheese was great but the hot sauce was just buffalo sauce. I think I just made the wrong choice of sandwich. I was looking for a tuna wrap and they don't make wraps so I had a tuna sub......it's just not the way I wanted it because a sub roll is too thick. It might have been better to get a steak and cheese. The owner was behind the counter and so nice! I hadn't been to Turtles in about 20 years and it was previously in downtown Hagerstown. Now it's on the outskirts of Hagerstown. We talked about how long the business has been around. This was a great place for subs and more. I ordered a Philly cheesesteak, my sister and son ordered ham and cheese subs (my sisters was hot and my son ordered cold). The subs were all fantastic. They clearly use quality ingredients and family recipes for things. The thing we're still talking about is the "special lettuce." My son doesn't like lettuce but he loved this. Nice folks but not sure how this place is so highly rated on both Yelp and Google. We were starving and got 3 different sandwiches and 1 soda. Came to $41 and change including tip. For that price, I expected large subs but these were 8 inch subs I think (maybe smaller?). The steak and cheese was somehow cold even though we were the only ones there and had to wait for our order. Took a drive today and stopped at Turtle's Subs for a sandwich. What a great surprise! The roast beef sub was fantastic and my husband was equally pleased with his hot steak and cheese sub. The sandwiches are large and come with lettuce that has been nicely seasoned. Their hot and sweet peppers are made in-house and are not to be missed. Clean, friendly! The food might be good, but I'll never know. On this day, the google listing said they were open until 7:00 and that you could dine in or carry out. This was my first time coming here on a recommendation. I arrived at about 5:35pm. I approached the door and saw a sign saying "masks required" and that they closed at 6 and that they are only accommodating carry out. So, my fiancé went back to the car to get our masks. The man behind the counter held his hands up with 6 fingers indicating they were closing at 6. I opened the door, verbalized understand and explained I was waiting on a mask. He then told me if I wanted food I better come in and order right now before the kitchen closes. So, my fiancé got back with a mask and we went in to order. I got "can I have 12 mild" out and he cut me off saying wings take 20 minutes and it's already 5:40 so I couldn't order wings. He was incredibly rude, and last time I checked 5:40 plus 20 minutes is 6:00 (when they close), but who am I... As soon as we walked out (without ordering) he locked the door behind us and closed the blinds. 20 minutes early. I will never go back there after the way were treated. The service was ok. The food was nothing great. I ordered a club sandwich that was boring. For $9 dollars I was expecting something decent. They have a beautiful sign up for drink kind of frozen fruit drinks. I ask for 1 and was told they were out. I ask the gentleman why because I was told that before. His response was we don't carry that anymore . I than said why not take sign down. He said then everyone would see the dirt on the wall.
