J & J Antiques sits at the edge of Cottonwood's Old Town and looks from the outside like a relic from the gold rush era (which it probably is). Inside, it's a seemingly never-ending warren of what can only be called "shops". You know, an antique collective filled with little stalls, each specializing in whatever oddity the vendor sees fit to hunt down and resell. There's everything in here from the booth reselling Scrabble tiles to the guy reselling irons. I walked out of here with 3 unique necklaces for what I thought to be a most reasonable price but that's only because I exercised restraint. In today's disposable culture, these kind of shops are in sharp decline. I might not want all of the stuff on display here but I sure do want to look at it all. Cottonwood's historic district is filled with similar shops but J & J Antiques is the first place I'd send you to. They literally have everything a shop like this should. Great place.

When you walk in, there are shops for clothes, coffee, and desserts. Then downstairs, there's the Basement Marketplace with more clothes, accessories, and a BBQ place. We wanted to try the barbecue, but they didn't have beef brisket, so we didn't. Overall, it seems like a cool, lively spot for students to hang out and shop, definitely worth checking out if you're in the area.

We saw a vacant space, so we grabbed it. It was right in front of a cool little art shop called Sedona's Tree House. Poking your head through the door is enjoyable in and of itself. It's as if you've met up with the Ents of Fangorn Forest (The Hobbit) and have been carried into a magical treehouse dream, with a giant tree climbing up through the middle of the shop. The shelves are cleverly designed from beautifully rough cut and masterfully finished planks held up in some cases with what seem to be branches growing out from under them. Hand crafted Kokopelli wind chimes, nature inspired table and wall art, and various artsy knickknacks of all sorts are beautifully displayed throughout this cozy little treehouse-themed shop. We ended up buying a beautiful sun-themed wind chime for only $25 that we're looking forward to putting up in our courtyard when we get home!

First of all, we are visiting Arizona because our 19 year old was diagnosed with multiple brain and spine tumors in late September and this is the only break we had to take as a family before we begin a series of tests and treatment over the course of months. Secondly, my husband and I are the type that like to try to support local shops and when we spend time in them, usually buy at least something in support. When we walked into Cleopatra Hill Gift Shop, our 6 year old found a small children's finger puppet book, sat down on the floor, and asked me to read it while his older brothers and father looked around the shop at other souvenirs. I was grateful to finally not be chasing him around asking him not to touch certain items and began happily reading the overpriced 5 paged toddlers book to him. We turned to the last page and I prepared to buy the book for him a a reward for his behavior until I heard the words "You can't finish the book unless you pay for it first." I turned around to see the owner staring directly at my son from behind the counter. She then looked at me, who was just standing there in shock and dumbfounded, not able to tell if she was joking or serious at this point, and then said in a nasty tone to me "Are you deaf?" In turn I asked her if she was joking. Her response was that she wasn't a library. At this point, I absolutely didn't buy the book from her and will make sure I let everyone I know of our experience in her store. My son began crying and I grabbed his hand and we left. I have never been in such shock.

I am going back this week for a switch plate that I fell in love with!
