Most people don't realize that Turner Falls Park, home to the legendary 77 foot waterfalls, is located in the Arbuckle Mountains, the most ANCIENT Mountain range in the United States & lucky for me, practically in my backyard.
Honorarily named after General Matthew Arbuckle (1778-1851) shortly b4 his death from cholera at Ft. Smith, in Arkansas, he was a career soldier from Virginia who was active here in the Indian Territory.
The Arbuckle Mountains, although quite small, are the oldest known formations in the US between the Appalachian and Rocky Mountains, stretching 35 miles east-to-west and 10-15 miles north-to-south.
The main part of the range, home to Turner Falls, is approximately 15 miles north of Ardmore and 5 miles south of Davis, Oklahoma on Interstate 35. About a hour south from OKC & about 3 hours north of DFW.
When I first visited the Arbuckle Mountains & Turner Falls I was blown away by the majestic beauty of this place & knew I had to live here somehow & who wouldn't?! It's an outdoor paradise with giant waterfalls, the largest lake in the state, Beautiful Lake Texoma, tons of hiking trails, world class trout fishing, Sulphur Springs, Lake Murray, The lake of the Arbuckle's & Chickasaw recreation center, which is the largest tribal cultural center in the United States.
If that doesn't blow you away our continental climate replete with seasonable weather year-round will knock your socks off. lol Just beautiful weather all year round :)
Hubby & I like hiking the top of Turner Falls near the wind farms, especially during climatic weather. The sunsets are the best we have ever seen & are as painfully beautiful as the hiking itself.
The hiking trails at nearby Chickasaw recreation center in the ancient rolling hills are just as visually beautiful anytime of year. And if your not into hiking you can zip thru the Arbuckle's with Air Donkey Zipline Adventures. (I listed them myself on yelp)
There is also tons of small town charm in the neighboring towns, fabulous food & great local shopping.
For luxury lodging, the New Artesian Hotel & spa in Sulphur is where you want to stay when visiting Turner Falls (the original Artesian Hotel established in 1906 was a hotspot for celebrities politicians & trendsetters until it was destroyed by a fire in 1962) The new Artesian spa & casino has brought back one of the region's most beloved hotels to its former glory, it's not to be missed.
This area is becoming more & more popular with tourist. People come from all over the world to explore Turner Falls, the Arbuckle Mountains, it's ancient rocks & Springs.
The granite rocks of the Arbuckles date back to the Precambrian Eon some 1.4 billion years ago which were overlain by rhyolites during the Cambrian Period.
Nearby Chickasaw Recreation Area & Sulphur Springs is littered with fresh healing Springs & lakes. Little Niagara & Rock Creek are also great for swimming. Veterans Lake is a anglers dream & Lake of the Arbuckles provides excellent, boating, fishing, swimming & skiing.
I have seen tons of people come to Sulphur Springs & load up the whole trunk of their car full of gallon jugs of the fresh healing spring waters sacred to the Chickasaw Indians. The water is indeed very tasty. I have a water well on my property & we love the taste of the water also.
Sometimes hubby & I ride the Heartland Flyer train from OKC to Ardmore. It goes right thru Davis & Turner Falls. Most people don't realize that there is a old mining town up there on Top of Turner Falls & some old buildings that are in ruins. It's quite a fascinating place that most have never seen.
Turner Falls Park is 1,500 acres & it's not just a park with a waterfall to swim in, it's so much more.
There are caves & a ROCK CASTLE to explore, wading area's for the small kids, sandy beaches, bath houses, picnic sites, water slides, around a dozen cabin rentals, tons of wildlife & around the end of November each year, trout season opens, offering some of the best trout fishing in the state.
And there is NOTHING better than some fresh smoked trout from the Arbuckle Mountains. :)...
Turner Falls is the oldest park in Oklahoma & was discovered by Mazeppa Thomas Turner, a Scottish immigrant farmer who married a Chickasaw woman, Laura Johnson. Turner was born in Virginia, later he became a farmer nearby & in 1878 he and his wife settled in a cabin along Honey Creek, where he discovered the incredible 77 foot waterfalls.
Can you imagine what discovering the Falls in the ancient Arbuckle Mountains for the first time must have felt like??
I can & that's why I feel incredibly blessed to call this beautiful ancient ecological diverse place home.
From the magical blackjack oak forests, to the emerald green rolling prairie's & bison roaming plains to the natural architecture of granite, limestone, dolemite, sandstone and shale that sets the Arbuckle mountains apart from all others in the state.
Highly recommend. read more
