This was my first time visiting the new bank. When I grew up in Ukrainian Village, the bank used to be across the street in a building that has since been demolished. Now, across the street and next to Burger King, the new bank is a sparkling gem of an institution. Inside, it is bright and an assortment of artworks by Ukrainian artists adorn the walls. The people inside all speak Ukrainian too, as this is a credit union that has served the residents community for many decades, many of whom were immigrants. I had called a few days earlier asking about resolving my deceased father's account that still had his name on it. The woman told me to come in and they would be ready for me. Sure enough, the moment I walked in with my mom, she had the paperwork ready and got us to a desk banker in a minute. In what was probably 40 minutes tops, we had closed the account, removed his name and transferred it into a new account without any major hassles. Contrary to Valery, this is not a Soviet era institution, and saying such a thing is an insult to the founders of this institution. It was formed as a financial beacon for people who came to this country with so little and earned their keep and prosperity through hard work, reinvesting it in the community that this bank has done consistently.

My experience obtaining a mortgage through Selfreliance Federal Credit Union was absolutely…read morehorrible from beginning to end. This was my first time getting a mortgage through a credit union, and based on this experience, I would never do it again. The entire process was disorganized, unprofessional, stressful, and severely lacking in communication and follow-up. Everything seemed to happen at the last possible minute, including major financial changes immediately before closing. From the beginning, the mortgage process did not seem properly organized. Typically, a lender collects the necessary financial documentation--bank statements, employment verification, pay stubs, and other required documents--before sending the loan to underwriting. In our case, only limited documentation was requested initially, and once the loan reached underwriting, we suddenly began receiving requests for information and documents that should have been collected much earlier. There was also unnecessary confusion regarding our homeowners insurance, including being asked to make payment arrangements that did not match how the insurance had originally been structured with the loan. However, the worst part of this experience occurred immediately before closing. The day before closing, after we finally received the wire instructions, confirmed the amount with the lender and title company, and wired our closing funds that morning, our loan officer, Oksana Hrudzevych, sent us a revised Closing Disclosure that evening adding approximately $16,000 to the amount required for closing. We were completely shocked. We were told this additional amount was related to the delayed second installment of property taxes. This made absolutely no sense to us because we specifically chose NOT to escrow our property taxes. The title company was not requiring this additional tax escrow, and the seller was already providing the applicable tax credit/proration. Yet somehow, the night before closing, approximately $16,000 was suddenly added to our required funds. What made the situation even worse was the complete lack of communication from Oksana. I repeatedly asked her to call me so that I could understand why such a significant amount had suddenly been added. My calls were not returned. On the morning of our scheduled closing, instead of being able to focus on purchasing our home, everyone was trying to determine why this additional charge had been added and whether we would even be able to close. The title company and our attorney did not require this additional amount, yet we were left scrambling because of a last-minute lender issue. For several hours on the actual day of closing, Oksana was not responding while everyone else was trying to resolve the problem. Eventually, after the matter was escalated and reviewed, it was determined that the additional amount should not have been added and had to be removed. Only then were we finally given the clear to close--just a few hours before our scheduled closing. This was completely unacceptable. Buying a home is already one of the largest and most stressful financial transactions a person can go through. A loan officer handling a mortgage should understand the loan structure, communicate significant changes immediately, return calls--especially the day before and the day of closing--and make sure the Closing Disclosure is accurate before creating unnecessary panic for the borrowers. Unfortunately, that was not our experience with Oksana. Even after we signed the closing documents, the problems and lack of communication continued. The loan funds were not authorized for disbursement until four days after closing, again without adequate communication or explanation to us about what was happening. The amount of unnecessary stress, confusion, and frustration this process caused was unbelievable. In my opinion, the handling of our mortgage demonstrated a serious lack of organization, communication, attention to detail, and understanding of the closing process. I would not recommend working with Oksana Hrudzevych based on our experience. A position involving mortgages and people's life savings requires someone who is knowledgeable, organized, responsive, and capable of handling time-sensitive financial matters accurately. Based on how our loan was handled, I believe Selfreliance should seriously review whether this position would be better handled by someone with stronger mortgage and closing experience. We ultimately purchased our home, but what should have been an exciting milestone was turned into days of unnecessary stress because of issues that should have been addressed long before closing. One star. I would not recommend this mortgage experience to anyone.
