It's taken me months to get up the nerves to write my Tumerico review. Somehow I've been to humbled to feel worthy, but I'm heading back to Tucson in a month and it's the only food I can think of. The layout of Tumerico is modest and informal. No meat, No problem! I resisted eating here (I really like meat), but my wife dragged me in a while back to try it. It was good enough that I suggested our second trip in. I was surprised how flavorful the food was even with no meat. I'm impressed! It doesn't replace meat, but it is its own unique delicious food. The Tamales are fantastic. 3rd best tamales I have ever had and those rank amongst meat tamales. All the ingredients are fresh and tasty. A negative was the self serve water that was warm. It was 108 degrees outside and drinking warm room temperature water was a damper on the experience. The horchata was not best I have had. Unfortunately, I had a terrible experience. I took my family to the restaurant, and after ordering our food, I bit into my taco and broke my teeth. I immediately called the manager, but they only offered to discount my meal. I explained that I needed to see a dentist to repair my teeth, and they referred me to their insurance. However, the insurance company did everything possible to avoid covering the costs, even though the food was contaminated with metal. When I showed them the piece of metal, they admitted it came from one of the strainers in their kitchen. Despite acknowledging their responsibility, I am still waiting for a resolution to this issue. The food is exceptional! This restaurant serves traditional Mexican style breakfast and dinner plates, along with Mexican drink, and expressos and Lattes. The thing that stands out for me from this restaurant and other Mexican restaurant is its not only its delicious taste but also its vegan meat focus using Jackfruit blended with sauces you would normally cook meat in. It was so good I wouldn't have known if it had meat or not because everything blended so well and the texture of the Jackfruit was like meat. Two plates we tried was the Taco Al Pastor, delicious and maybe a 4/5 spice flavor, but it hit the spot. The other plate which was exceptional was Ropa Vieja plate. Had no spice, and extremely delicious. Ambient was traditional Mexican feel. Beautiful setting. Service was great. Just visiting from Seattle to bicycle around. I ate at Tumerico 3x in a span of 7 days. If their hours matched up with our rides, I would've been there every single day. The place itself is really cute and very spacious. The customer service was top notch and everyone was so welcoming. You really feel like you're at home. My favorite was seeing the owner Wendy work her butt off with a smile. She also asked me "how was it?". I had to tell her it was so good! But also I was so star struck... With all that being said, I loved everything I ate. It can't really go wrong. I loved my Cuban tacos and the burritos! The coffee too was so good too. What can I say? Tumerico is internationally recognized (deservedly so) for its vegetarian offerings, which are a symphony of flavors. They don't take reservations so pick a time when it's off peak or plan to wait in line. A well-deserved Yelp's Top 100 award!! I love being able to try a top 100, they never disappoint. It is rare to find a vegan/vegetarian Mexican restaurant. For those who aren't vegan, they do use real cheese and eggs! For vegans, they offer great substitutions! I ordered potato tacos which are mashed potato in a crisp corn tortilla shell with cashew cream and guac served with rice and beans. Everything was amazing!!! The rice is not a heavy traditional Mexican rice, it is light and well-flavored. The tacos were fabulous. I also got to try the jackfruit meat, it was really good for not being meat. There is a bit of a line to order as there is only one register and they don't rush anyone. They have three different menus. The staff came out while we were waiting in line to explain each menu. I got the Ropa Vieja Plate and the Tamales Plate. I've had so many tamales but this was easily one of the top 3 I've ever had. Not sure how the masa could be so good without any lard mixed. The vegan carnitas was super flavorful alone as well. The Ropa Vieja was perfect as well. Look at the photos, doesn't look like beef, but it looks like real shredded carnitas. The flavors meshed really well. The service is also excellent. The person who took my order was really patient and recommended both dishes to me. Our food came out quickly. Nice large portions - I could not finish mine. All the plates (but soup) come with beans, rice, salad, & pico. I got the jackfruit tacos. They were tasty! I had never had jackfruit so I'm not able to compare it to say how good, lol. But, even my kiddo's grandma who is not a very adventurous eater loved them. I went for Cuban Tacos based from shredded and seasoned Jackfruit. A big ugly fruit the size of pineapple. I ve seen them in Hawaii. The origin is tied to the wriggley Gum family. Another story. So bummed I didn't like this restaurant. I wanted the turmeric lemonade, but they were out. I tried the taco plate - Spicy Cuban and Al Pastor. Favorite part was the greens. Least favorite is the jackfruit "meat". Imagine the woody part of an artichoke. That's what it resembled. I couldn't chew it down so it was essentially inedible.
