I wanted something with at least one good veggie option, they wanted something with meat, and it had to be somewhere in-between Camden and Canary Wharf, not too pricey, and ideally close to the city because otherwise our Italian friend probably wouldn't make it. And lo and behold.... THE FAT BEAR!!! It was all we wanted and more! This place is sort of tucked away and up some stairs above a pub. It's really just a room and a half, which makes it super cozy and they have a pretty awesome looking bar. It's got warm lighting which makes the atmosphere really nice. Their cocktails were delightful and the service was excellent. I will make a very strange observation that someone working there had a very drunk friend who just sort of made herself at home. Then more joined and it turned into me watching this table of really really drunk people trying to order food. Two of them ended up just falling asleep. It was super strange. Anyway, me being distracted aside, I really loved the cocktail I ordered- Sloe Boat To China, and everyone else seemed happy with theirs. I was dying to try the pimiento cheese starter and the fried pickles. The cheese was particularly sharp and delicious. The pickles were good, but quite skinny (I mean come on, you're in an American restaurant I was expecting some serious pickles). The vegan gumbo was super spicy and delicious. I was impressed and enjoyed it. My husband dropped the ball and ordered the regular jambalaya (with sausage) rather than the seafood one which broke my heart a little bit, because I really wanted to try it. You know, I guess that means we'll just have to come back. Oh also another bonus, this place has brisket which is really hard to find. I can't say how it tastes but my friend said he defo approves (am I becoming more British with these words, or just more annoying?) Anyway, to finish it off I had the oreo cheesecake which the bomb. I love oreos. And it tasted like oreo. So all was right with the world. A wonderful place to come if you have people who want to try American food, or if you have out of town Americans who are too scared to try other food, or if you have hungry friends that want to try cajun food, or if you just want to try some really yummy food.

It's a mixed experience, and different to the US, but the bottom line is the food is still to die for. Sweet Chick don't do reservations. Which is fine - the US locations are tiny, you wait which creates a buzzy atmosphere for others, etc. The London version copies this. But when we visited for an early dinner Saturday, the venue was half empty. Hoping to eat quickly, we were told to sit at the bar, for "at most a half hour". We did this. During this time, achingly hipster bartenders slowly made cocktails from cheat sheets. The place is new, I get it, but the staff at the front end are there to bring you in. The hostess continually seated larger parties ahead of us, and at times just hung out while tables were available. This is super annoying - it's clearly part of the process, and designed to get you to spend. There was no flexibility to it, and the experience wasn't welcoming so much as just awkward. BUT - once we were seated, it became a totally different experience. Lovely, attentive service for a start. Help with choosing menu items if you want it, fast delivery that doesn't rush you, and the food...Goddamn the food. Carbs on carbs on carbs. Gooey mac and cheese with a hint of spice and crunchy crumb coating...delicious melt in the mouth biscuits (savoury scones to us) with a salt and herb crust and about a tub of butter in each... and all that before the main course. Chicken and waffles is the staple, and more than filling. Two chicken pieces, deep fried but not greasy, with a waffle. It isn't fancy, and doesn't need to be. It's just delicious and well made. Prices are reasonable - mains are in the £13-£24 range. Cocktails are nicely varied, made with cheap liquor which is a shame, but still pretty tasty. And maybe if they can iron out the intro experience to make it feel less like every other London restaurant and more like the NY joint, it would be a five star experience. Until then, put up with weird intro, it's worth it for the food. Just leave your belt at home.

I've been looking forward to visiting Duck & Waffle for quite some time. The views are incredible,…read morethe space itself is striking, and on paper it promises that perfect London mix of skyline, late-night energy, and elevated comfort food. Unfortunately, our experience was soured before it even had a chance to begin. My girlfriend and I walked in excited, completely amicable, simply hoping to head upstairs for a bite and drinks. We were greeted by the doorman with an immediate, dismissive "Are you good?" -- not in a welcoming or helpful tone, but in a way that felt skeptical and unnecessarily confrontational. There was no warmth, no "welcome in," no attempt at hospitality. It immediately set an uncomfortable tone. He then proceeded to call upstairs as though he were doing us some sort of favor just by allowing us to go up. The entire interaction felt transactional and judgmental rather than gracious. First impressions matter, especially at a place that positions itself as a premium dining destination. Hospitality begins at the door, not at the table. When we finally made it upstairs, the room was filled with visibly drunk, rowdy groups -- which only made the earlier attitude feel even more misplaced. If that environment is acceptable (and profitable), then two polite guests looking for drinks and food shouldn't be met with suspicion at the entrance. By that point, the damage was done. The initial interaction had already rubbed us the wrong way, and the energy upstairs didn't help. We ultimately decided to leave before even sitting at our table. That's how strongly the first impression impacted us. It's difficult to justify staying somewhere when you don't feel genuinely welcomed from the outset. Duck & Waffle has the potential to be memorable for all the right reasons. But someone representing the brand at the very front needs to understand that hospitality isn't optional -- it's foundational. A simple, respectful welcome would have changed everything. I hope management takes this seriously, because no guest should feel judged or dismissed before they even step inside.

One colleague got the hot dog - it was incredible looking, enormous and slathered with stuff. I did think it would be impossible to eat with your hands, but he proved me wrong. My chicken wrap was really tasty and nicely done, and the fries were delicious - possibly the best I've had in a while. When one friend couldn't finish his sausage platter with mac and cheese, the waitress cheerfully wrapped it up for him so he could carry it away. Nice! The music was terrific, a great mix of old blues. So why oh why is there a big screen telly playing current music videos over the bar, complete with naked writhing women and gangsters? Shut it off - you're ruining the vibe you actually got me to like. Is it cheesy? Yes. But it's supposed to be. And it's good. But shut off that damn tv.

Baby back ribs: not necessarily fall of the bone type of ribs, but if you give it a good tug , some of the meats will slide off its axis. I enjoyed it for what it's worth. In the couple of years I've lived in London I've noticed something in particular aobut Nando's: the locals don't really talk about it nearly as much as foreigners do. When I read conversations by Americans who have spent some time in the UK it is very common to read "I wish there was a Nando's nearby!" whereas I haven't heard that once actually living here. If anything, the most common observation I'm privy to is "It used to be much cheaper!" That's because it's just kind of average chicken. You can add some spice to it if you so desire but that's all you're doing because it doesn't come with any added flavor. The sides that can come along with it like the rice, corn, and broccoli are also absent of much flavor, and getting the chicken in sandwich form doesn't really help much. Also, if you happen to be nearby the Canary Wharf location there is a much superior branch of Chicken Shop literally right next door for the same cost. My fellow Americans, you are viewing this establishment through the sentimentality of your trips abroad. I do not use hyperbole when I say the humble El Pollo Loco in SoCal is an order of magnitude tastier and cheaper than Nando's.
