Tucson Yoga - Yoga Near Me - Tucson, Arizona

I didn't come here for yoga, but for the Sunday night Sanga group. I had heard about this group for quite some time, but found that I was not attracted to the meditation hour: the group meets beginning at 7 p.m. on a Sunday. Considering I work Mondays through Fridays and keep very busy weekday hours, I like to use my Sunday evenings for preparing for the week. But I opted to go, wanting to learn about the group's members and share in their ritual meditation. I must offer a disclaimer: In my meditation practice, I prefer non-guided meditations, or silent sits. It's just a personal preference. The meditation portion was not guided -- we received an introduction and sat silently for a half hour. I enjoyed that part. Then we did a walking meditation in which there also was no talking. I had not done a walking meditation before. I enjoyed it and loved how it brought my attention very purposefully back to my environment, to myself and to the person walking before me and the person walking behind me. That was quite lovely, and challenging at times. The group then moved into the reflection period, during which people were allowed to share thoughts, ideas, perspectives, experiences and resources or whatever else. There was no dialogue, just sharing. This seemed to take up a substantial part of the time. In all, I very much enjoyed the group. The space is nice. Very linear and, on this summer night, was very hot. The fans overhead were going at full speed, but it was still somewhat uncomfortable. Also about the space, I love the flooring. It's a beautiful design and has a yield that is ever so slight. It feels wonderful to the touch of the hands or the feet. And I appreciate that the studio offers blankets, mats and pillows. read more

Ommmmmm..... Tucson Yoga was voted the best yoga place in Tucson for the year of 2005-2006. I will start off with that simple comment. I'm new to yoga and found this place roaming through the Internet trying find ways to make my stalky body leaner. My first priority was to find something CHEAP! And for only $5 a class, I think this place constitutes. Because I am not familiar with yoga, styles of yoga, yoga etiquette, I will simply give you a synopsis of my first visit: 1) Its a downtown location that is hard to find if you use the directions given on their website. I drove around downtown, 4th avenue and through the UA campus about 2-3 times before I decided to use my inherent body compass to find it. Yes, it was a Monty Python/Benny Hill comedic event if anyone was there to witness. 2) Please get there ahead of time as suggested. The classes fill up quickly (I think its about a max capacity of 40) . Because it took me forever to find the place, I stumbled in there late and as I reached into my purse to pull out my $5, all of my pennies fell onto the cement floor disturbing all of the peaceful yoga masters during their warm up. 3) Mats and blankets are provided, which is a plus for those who are new to yoga and are not sure if they want to invest in their own mat. 4) I found a place in the corner, next to a wall, so I would successfully bump my head into it every once in awhile during the learning of poses. (Don't get a spot next to the side wall across from the bathroom !). 5) Wear clothes that are comfortable, but won't expose your cha cha's and mid-drift because you get to do some nifty little acrobat stunts at times. 6) Expect to be in pain the next day, if you're doing everything right. At the end of the day I was really satisfied with my yoga experience. For a lab rat like myself, this was a good 2 hour work out which uses your own body as resistance in toning and using those unused muscles. Unlike many other workouts I've done, this was the most complete. I felt all of my muscles being used (feet, buttocks, hamstrings, arms, delts, pects, etc.). I couldn't move the next 3 days. The instructors are really friendly and passionate about their craft,. However, there's this one that isn't so friendly. Well, lets say she's friendly to everyone else, but not to me. She comes across frigid and lacking warmth BUT I enjoy her class the most. WARNING, this next comment is going to be a hippie/psychedelic moment.: she brings all of her internal beauty into her instruction, her chanting, and musical skills. The other instructors are also good as they have been on Oprah show or teach at Canyon Ranch, etc. Guys, if you attend any class you will find yourself with other men, but a majority of the class is composed of ladies who don't believe in shaving. There is always those 4 or 5 hot chicks in the class, but they will not date you. People of all sizes and abilities attend these classes and no one feels inferior, intimidated or uncomfortable. After one session my posture greatly improved and my back was elongated giving that catwalk stance. After a few sessions my boyfriend told me I looked like I was losing weight. (that's the power of secretly feeding your boyfriend barbiturates because yoga doesn't make you lose weight unless you combine it with something else, but it does improve your posture making the weight appear to be redistributed). What I rave about yoga is that after a session with the school marm instructor (she just comes across cold to me, but very attractive, and I think my aura sends her off or something because people always usually run to me, not away from me) is that you feel really at peace and at ease. I don't do drugs (never have, never will) but its a strange drug induced effect you experience. Your legs are wobbly, you're in another dimension of time and space, its like you're numb to everything that was bothering you before you came. If I can get that mood altering experience after every workout without having to run 5-10 miles, I think its worth it. read more

The Wednesday night mix level class is fantastic. Joanna is a wonder. She's really warm and really creative. Always comes up with different versions of poses to match everyone's experience level. The location may be a bit hard to find if you're not familiar with downtown, especially with the roadwork on Broadway, but it's worth the search. The only complaint I can think of is the front/paying/leaving bags/etc area is a little awkwardly laid out. Maybe it would be better if the paying/signing -in area and the bookcase were switched? I don't know, but I don't think it's a deterrent to attending classes. read more

My friend and I came here for a Saturday morning Beginners Yoga class. The first thing that surprised me about this place was that right when you walk in, you're in your studio! Right when we walked in, there were all these people lined up with their mats. Granted, we were also a bit late - but the guy there (sitting behind a folded table) was super friendly and accommodated us quickly. I also didn't bring a mat - and first mat rental was free! Score! (regular mat rental rates are $1) But more on the mat later. Since it was a beginners class, the practice was pretty low-key and relaxing. I felt like I was doing an extended stretch class....which can be nice! Since I usually do yoga that result in extreme sweating, it's nice to go to a place where you don't sweat. But I wouldn't really call the beginners class a real workout. Okay, so the mat. It smells :( I didn't really notice that there was a weird smelly odor until I was doing child's pose - where my head was down on the mat. I tried to push this out of my head and think that maybe I just got a bad mat. But after the class, when I asked where I should put my used mat, the guy just pointed to the pile I originally picked it up from. So...basically if you pick up a mat previously used by someone who might have taken a more sweaty yoga class, perhaps you will also bask in their sweat. PROS: cheap, provides blankets/blocks/straps, friendly staff, good community atmosphere CONS: mats are not cleaned after use read more

Tucson Yoga is the best yoga studio ever. I mean, can you beat a $6 one and a half hour yoga class taught by a thoughtful yogi? This is truly a yoga studio for the People. The studio has a communal feel--minimal business and maximum community. I've been attending classes here since I moved to Tucson a little over two years ago and I can't imagine relocating to another studio. Great workshops, great weekly classes. Leah and Joe offer invigorating and challenging practices on Monday and Tuesday nights (respectively), and Julie helps students link movement and meditation in her Sunday afternoon class. Be sure to attend beginner classes if you've never done yoga before. There's not a lot of remedial instruction in the vinyasa classes. read more

I took Frank Jude Boccio's class, "Mindfulness Yoga". Really good class. The class was pretty full and the students were varied. It was a comfortable pace but pushed me. I thought it would be a restorative class but it was actually more of a vinyasa class. Had a nice meditation at the end and Frank was good with cues and pacing. Only $6 and a $1 mat rental fee. read more

I attended the newborn baby yoga class yesterday and it was awesome! It costs $6 cash or $7 card and I felt so comfortable with my little one. The instructor targets areas that become very tense for moms that are forced to use parts of their body they never did before (ie upper neck, shoulders, lower back) For new moms, taking your baby places can also be STRESSFUL, but the instructor makes everyone feels so welcome. There were about 7 moms present and nursing and diaper changing during the class is totally welcome. If you are looking to meet other moms, the instructor lets people hang out after the class to chat with one another. I am excited to go next week! I actually do not live in Tucson anymore, but after going to quite a few yoga studios in Tucson, Phoenix metro area and a couple in Boulder, I've determined that Tucson Yoga is one of the best I've practiced at. One of my favorite things about this studio is that they definitely take yoga seriously, but are very lighthearted and welcoming at the same time - as yoga should be. They have a great variety of classes and in every class I've taken, the instructors do an excellent job of talking you through the different stages of a pose and work with you on alignment and making sure you are doing it correctly. The studio is clean, tidy, welcoming and friendly. They are also very affordable and offer great workshops and community events. Out of all the studios in Tucson, this one, in my opinion, is the best. read more

I've gone to Tucson Yoga off and on for years. I even participated in the beginners yoga workshop which I enjoyed thoroughly even if I didn't feel like a pro at the end. What I liked was that no one expected me to feel like a pro. Yoga takes practice and the teachers at Tucson Yoga are very encouraging and supportive of yoga enthusiasts of every ability level. The studio is always clean and welcoming. There is even a pleasant healthful smell about the place. Recently I've fallen in love with Tucson Yoga all over again because of their Mama Baby yoga classes. I've been hard pressed to find a group for new moms that was at a convenient time as far as naps and feedings go. The Mama Baby class is centered around new moms reconnecting with their new, post baby, bodies in an environment where babies are welcome. No one cares if your baby is a little fussy or if you need to change a diaper or you need to breast feed. I'm only disappointed that the class is only offered once a week. read more

She has a great bubbly personality which makes class playful. She is now teaching a noon class on Friday's that is only $4! At Tucson yoga, you should bring your own mat, or they rent them for $1. Fun environment, good teachers, and remarkably inexpensive. My second class at Tucson Yoga I forgot my money. Debbie, the founder, said, "Don't worry about it. Have a good class." That's the attitude of a place where I want to do yoga. As for the classes, it seems every teacher is different, with their own unique training, which I like and others may not. It gives you a taste of many schools of yoga asana (poses). I think Tucson Yoga is an ideal place to start and grow a yoga practice. read more

I love Tucson Yoga. A few months back I wrote a review about Yoga Oasis and how I was going to look into other studios in town to see if there was a more welcoming environment for people who don't have super athletic thin bodies. And then I found Tucson Yoga! I've been going to classes there for the last several weeks and love it. I never feel pressured to come into poses that I know are not right for my body, and it feels totally fine to sit out for a minute and just breathe if you need a little space to yourself. They have a good deal where you can buy 10 passes for $50, otherwise it's still only $6 to drop in. You should bring your own mat (they charge $1 to use theirs) but they have all the other props there. The space is lovely and cozy. It's just one big room with wood flooring, dim lighting, and yoga inspired murals on the walls. It's a really relaxing space to be in- despite the fact that you are in the heart of noisy downtown. Also (and maybe this is just the classes I've been to) no Tucson Yoga teacher has touched me! I really hate when you go to yoga class and for some reason the teacher feels they can move your body or touch you without 1st checking with you to see if that's okay. Consent is always important- especially in yoga. ***update... okay, there was one time when someone was subbing for my usual teacher who moved my body into a pose without my consent. I was very upset, but I emailed them about it and I got a very thoughtful email back, so I feel fine about it now.*** When I was trying to go to classes at Yoga Oasis, I had to psyche myself up for it and kind of dreaded it because I knew I'd be the fattest person there and the teachers would pressure me (in that weird zen yoga way) to come into poses that my body just doesn't do. But when it's time to go to Tucson Yoga classes, I just feel excited about it- it's a highlight in the day. So, I totally recommend Tucson Yoga, especially to people who are maybe unfamiliar with yoga and just starting out, people who have had a 'lapse in fitness' and are trying to get back into exercise, and people who would maybe feel out of place at other studios. They have a wide range of classes at different ability levels and there are quite a few where the emphasis is on slow poses, mindfulness, and breath. I really love Tucson Yoga- they really helped me come back to my practice and feel better about my body and exercise than I have in a long time. read more

Hurray for Tucson Yoga! Such a friendly and inviting atmosphere, Tucson Yoga (TY) is the first studio I checked out after moving here from NYC. I enjoy all kinds of classes and have experience with intensive flash pose places and those that cater to more breath and heart-centered practices. TY offers a nice range of basics to expanding classes, and is one of the few studios to offer Yin yoga. All classes are very reasonably priced @ $6 or $5 with a pass. The faculty has turned over since ownership changed hands to the lovely Laurent Baig, so there are many teachers I have yet to meet. That said, Leah Stauber's basics and flow classes are wonderful, especially for folks who are starting out. Michelle Marks often packs the house with vigorous Hatha Flow classes. Joanna Carichner offers the most gentle of gentle restorative classes, verrry relaxing. My absolute favorites are the Yin classes led by Gabrielle Pietrangelo. Yin invites unfathomable tranquility as the body gently eases into deep asana poses that are held for extended periods of time. Gabrielle's pacing, cadence and choreography all lend to an wonderfully relaxing and meditative experience. A friend got me 10 classes passes to Tucson Yoga for Christmas. It was one of the best gifts I have ever received! I LOVE the yin-vinyasa class on Monday nights at 7PM (normally taught by Gabrielle-she sings during shavasana!) You start off with a gentle flow and then the rest of the class is yin style. In yin, you hold poses for as long as 3-5 minutes, and use props like bolsters and blankets. If you are like me and usually favor a vigorous vinyasa or hot power flow, the counterbalance of a yin class feels AMAZING. You work out all the fascia on your legs and back, and find your edge and have time to meditate in hip-opening asanas. Adding a weekly dose of yin is probably the best thing I've done for my practice so far. I leave class feeling relaxed, restored, and centered. The studio, with its cork floor and calming atmosphere, is a true delight. On a Monday evening, it feels truly sacred to honor that lunar energy in a dimly light, welcoming studio. This is definitely a studio that leans more to the spiritual side of yoga, and I love that. If chanting freaks you out and you just want to work on your core, perhaps this studio isn't for you. After traveling to Germany and finding Yoga classes here that cost anywhere between 15 and 20 USD (12-15 Euro) I still find that Tucson Yoga offers the friendliest service with very helpful teachers and relaxed atmosphere. OK, so my hubby still goes but I am just not doing as much yoga lately. I am liking zumba and weight training more - whole other story. Back to the point; CRACK!!! I went once not too long ago and it was crowded as usual and I get this older guy next to me and his shorts are pretty much falling off - we're talking half ass. I never totally get the crack in public thing. In my own home, scrubbing the floor or something, sure - why not? But, how can you not notice, feel a little breeze or something? I really had a hard time not laughing as this was happening the whole time class was in session. He never gave the shorts a tug - mind you they never fell off (thank God for small miracles) but it was my own personal horror story just waiting in fear and dread. Still really great place, don't get me wrong - but that was one night I didn't know I was going to see the moon. . . .and it wasn't a pretty sight! I know the phrase 'home away from home' is a probably a bit overused, but that's exactly how I feel about my favorite yoga studio in Tucson. What struck me the first time I walked into Tucson Yoga was the energetic quality of the space: warm, expansive, welcoming, sweet, open, strong, free. Although I don't live in Tucson anymore, I think back on my time practicing at Tucson Yoga with palpable fondness. What makes Tucson Yoga a gem among yoga studios is the caliber of the instructors. TY attracts big-hearted, open-minded yogis who have dedicated their lives to practicing and teaching yoga. They're all incredibly different, but share the same passion. They love yoga. They believe in it. And you will, too! Tucson Yoga offers classes for all "levels." Advanced, intermediate, beginners, whatever. Those new to yoga feel welcomed and safe, in part because instructors always offer various modifications to make poses more accessible for all bodies. There's never any pressure to do a pose that your body isn't ready for. In fact, I would say a hallmark of Tucson Yoga is the emphasis on gently tuning in to your OWN body, listening to its own very personal wisdom. After a while practicing at Tucson Yoga, you realize that YOU are your best guide. (And it takes an accomplished instructor to help you see that to be true). That said, I wouldn't say that Tucson Yoga is "easy." Attend any Vinyasa or Yin class and your body will be splendidly led to its edge. I found that each class challenged me in new, surprising ways and helped me journey deeper into my own self. Tucson Yoga's safe-sacred-fun vibe supports your practice. Tucson Yoga is affordable, only $6 a class. If you find yourself at the studio doing yoga often, becoming a member is an economical idea. At $45 a month, it's an all around sweet deal. In particular, I love Michelle's Vinyasa class on Friday night -- it opens your heart, mind, and body for a beautiful weekend ... and girlfriend's got the best playlist to lead you deeper and onward into the practice. This studio is clean, and the class instruction was excellent. I went to a Sunday 8AM class and it wasn't too crowded. The space is a simple large room with a small WC. The temperature was comfortable and there were plenty of props. The community seems to be from the University, however, I felt welcome as a first time visitor from out of town. My only minor criticism would be that the new sign-in was a bit time consuming. read more

Went for the Friday 6am led Ashtanga primary series with Laurent and practiced alongside such amiable students--a rarity if you've practiced in studios around the U.S. and globally. The owner, Laurent, was gracious. A local's studio that stays close to the true yoga principles. Not a gym-type yoga and not too heavy on yogic doctrine. Just right. Bring a mat or $1 to rent one. First time students get a free mat. There's a kombucha tap if you love it fresh. read more

Natasha Korshak teaches an amazing Sunday class at Tucson Yoga which was among my most favorite ways to spend an early Tucson Sunday. The classes are honest, low impact, and have a great energy. Did I mention that the classes are often low budget? Drop in class when I was attending was merely $5 a class (although the website mentions that it may have gone up to $6-10). I feel very fortunate to have found Tucson Yoga at the beginning of my yoga practice. Who knew I would hit the Tucson yoga mecca right off the bat!?! The instructors really know their stuff - Sally, Frank & Joe are my favorites! I've learned so much about yoga here and have now made yoga a regular activity in my life. Yesterday I went to the 4:15 yoga class. I love the way I feel after, grounded and more aware of my body. Today I am sore, and that is a great thing! The space feels open with the windows that let in the light, yet when I'm practicing it is easy to focus and ground myself. So far, the instructors I have had have been wonderful- I can't seem to be there for the same teachers often. read more

I've done "competitive" yoga at Yoga Oasis, "calisthenics" at Bikram-style Yoga Vida, but Tucson Yoga is best at melding meditation and movement, mindfulness and poses, in other worlds, actual yoga. Below I've reviewed three different yoga classes at Tucson Yoga: 1. Teacher: Gabrielle Pietrangelo Style: Yin Gabrielle, welcomed me into her class. I know her from outside of the yoga studio environment. She sat down next to me and asked if I had done this type of yoga before and a bit about my experience. She checked in to see if I had any injuries or special needs. It was nice to have someone take the time to do that. She appeared grounded and focused form the moment I walked in. The class began with a little singing. She peppered the class with music and singing throughout. She is a local musician and brought her guitar. The singing and music felt natural and lent itself nicely to the poses and feel of the room. She held the relaxed energy throughout the class. She offered variations on the poses and approached things in a gentle calm manner. This was a very therapeutic class in a no pressure environment. Her sense of spontaneity came through in the use of music. This music may have been planned ahead but it came across with ease and spontaneity. When someone is comfortable doing something they are able to take risks and pull new tools out of their pockets and it adds to the experience. The music did not distract but kept everyone in the poses and facing the challenge. The emotion she put forth seemed to be a combination of joy and empathy. This emotion was sustained and carried us through the class. Honestly I was so deeply into my own experience I had trouble noticing anyone around me. I do believe she helped a person or two with props etc but it was seamless. We ended the class with her singing and the class joining in. Music and chanting is such a wonderful thing to experience during yoga class. 2. Teacher: Poep Sa Frank Jude Boccio Style: Mindfulness/Insight Yoga It was a morning class and I generally do not do morning yoga classes so this was new for me. I love yoga practice in the morning and will do a short one at home but rarely drag my butt to a class in the morning. I arrived and everyone was getting lined up like they knew the drill. This led me to believe they are regulars. He came across as relaxed and yet fully alert. He was excellent at guiding us into the postures and guiding us to feel and notice what was going on in the body. He did something unique that I found really helpful. Instead of getting out of a longer held pose and getting up and shaking it off, he asked us to sit with it for a minute and notice what was going on in the body. He truly had a mindful approach and cultivated an environment of noticing. The practice of insight meditation when applied to yoga is a powerful combination. Insight meditation tells us to notice what is really going on and see things for what they really are. He was excellent at letting us know not to strive too hard and relax into the poses. He came across as benevolent and unpretentious. The class had the right amount of movement and stillness. He kept the energy going and a kind smile on his face the entire time. It was a great experience having a class with a former Buddhist monk. He exuded accomplishment and humbleness. 3. Teacher: Alyssa Kratz Style: Mixed Hatha with Gongs (Gonga Yoga) I stepped into the room and marveled at all of the gongs lined up near the far wall. Some of them were huge. There were two musicians sitting in front of the gongs with drums, singing bowls and other percussive instruments. The teacher walked right up and introduced herself to me. She gave a good firm handshake and asked if I'd ever been to one of her Gonga Yoga classes before and I said no but that I was looking forward to it. I told her I was a musician and was very interested in what she was doing with sound and yoga. There were strings of lights around the room which made it nice and dim (not too dim). Alyssa (teacher) made her way to the front of the room and read a quote from Jack Kornfeld (Vipassana Buddhist teacher). The music began, first with singing bowls and drums and later evolving into cacophony. I was almost a little annoyed with the music at first, but once we started moving I appreciated it. It helped to hold the space and get me through a challenging flow type class. Alyssa commanded the room well and seemed to have a gentle strength about her. Her voice was clear and instructions concise. She wasn't throwing in any uneccesary words or fluffy language. She seemed brave in front of the class and really worked with the feel of the music. The musicians worked well with what she was doing too as they seemlessly switched instruments and changed feel along with the asanas. Alyssa's character was warm and accepting. Though the class was challenging I did not feel at all like I needed to be competitive. She created an environment of openness and acceptance. read more

I check in all the time and now its time to really share my love for Tucson Yoga. I used to practice at the local gym but when they started taking yoga off their schedule i took it as a sign that it was time to take my practice to another level. Tucson Yoga is Tucson's community yoga center, offering lots more than just basic classes. They offer great workshops and have monthly movies amongst their offerings. Classes are a bargain at $6 for 90 minutes. All of the instructors are top-notch. I have never walked out of there feeling anything less than bliss! I hope this review helps anyone who has been curious about this beautiful space in the heart of downtown Tucson. read more

He walked me outside and pointed down the street at Tucson Yoga, the closest one. I attended Friday morning's class and it was wonderful! Claire led me in a challenging, fun practice after which she chanted. She was warm and welcoming, made helpful adjustments and suggestions and has a beautiful voice. I attended on Sunday afternoon at the whim of my daughter and her three friends (each 18 yoa). We had no idea what to expect other than the narrative online. We were met by Ms. Korshak who was so very nice. We apparently were not at a beginners class, we misread "gentle" to mean beginner. We were made to feel very welcome, given appropriate instruction and equipment. I was not expecting much as I always pictured yoga to be a little "out there". I was very surprised, it is both relaxing and a workout at the same time. I highly recommend this studio! I highly recommend taking Kelly Melsted's class -- she is completely welcoming, has a loving and grounded presence, and subtly weaves in strong yogic philosophy without being preachy. Kelly's class is perfect for any level student because she's excellent at explaining steps to get into poses as well as offering more advanced variations for seasoned students. Kelly's classes are calming, light, warm, and challenging. She was my very first yoga teacher in Washington, DC, and I can't wait to get back to one of her classes soon. I am even going to try to make it to her upcoming workshop on July 13th - Living Your Life with Intention. If anyone is qualified to teach that, it's Kelly. read more

best yoga in tucson! cheap classes, quality instructors, peaceful and perfect oasis

Tucson yoga is an amazing studio. What makes it unique and beautiful is the teachers and the community of yogis who are both just beggining their practice or continuing many years of practice. Either way there is something for everyone. The classes are affordable at $6, and $5 with pass packages, so even if you are curious you can check it out without it hurting your budget. All of the teachers are wonderful and you can explore which ones are a good fit for you. I happen to love yong flow at a more vigorous pace, so I would recommend Michelle, Joe and Leah who offer many suggestions to make the practice your own and allow you to take it at your own pace. I also love Joanna's class on Wednesday because it it mixed level so you can flow a little more, or take sweet gentle stretches. Michelle now has a Yin Yong class on Saturday at 9am which is a wonderful slow to flowing class which is an amazing way to start your weekend.! Was a good beginners class as far as the yoga went, but they focus heavily on the spiritual/religous aspect which made me feel a bit out of place, especially when they started chanting and I was just expected to know what and when to chant. read more

i don't usually write these reviews, but i had to comment on joe's vinyasa class. he has an amazingly warm and calm presence, and greeted everyone personally. i didn't know what i'd be in for, the class was challenging and vigorous, but he constantly provided non-judgmental options for all the different ability levels in class. i think people felt pretty comfortable taking it where they wanted, and still getting a lot out of the class. i really enjoyed his directions, and adjustments, and the shivasana was incredible. read more
