If you're wondering how this Yank - by way of the Far East - would know of this out-of-the-way place in a suburb of Bath, well, that's because I have a longtime friend who married a Brit, and his parents live in a renovated rectory in the quaint town of Wellow. They were kind enough to let me visit them, and this is their local watering hole. This is truly England to me. It's a small 16th-century pub complete with a fireplace, a pool table, a separate dining room and even a skittle-ball alley. The beer on tap is indeed thirst-quenching, but they also provide a mighty fine ploughman's lunch or if you prefer, bangers and mash, or if you are feeling politically incorrect, you can have "faggots"...which to us Yanks, are Spam-like meatballs. They have event nights like Irish Session Nights on Saturdays where you hear aspiring local musicians warble a tune for us to accompany with our semi-drunken voices. If I lived in Wellow, I'd be like Norm. "Hey everybody, it's Ed" "EDDDD!" Surely they would know my name by now. Ah the memories. If the Pump Room at the Roman Baths is full up, I highly suggest you motor it to the Fox & Badger, laddie. FOOD & DRINK - 4 stars...t'is fine grub for a pub AMBIANCE - 5 stars...comfy place where everyone would know your name SERVICE - 4.5 stars...charmers, they are TOTAL - 5 stars...an outstanding evening is to be had in Wellow for the working folk

We waited around just in case they were a bit late opening, but no luck. Wellow is a pretty village but pretty dead, made worse by an unreliable pub. Fortunately there is a nice little cafe on the outskirts of Wellow, in the Wellow Horse Livery Centre, called the Rider's Test Tea Rooms. I would recommend to skip the pub and support this friendly cafe instead!

I was relaxed from the moment we turned up, massively hungover from a wedding the night before, but the staff and all the people in the pub were really laid back and friendly and the bacon and tomato ciabatta healed me almost immediately. For dinner that night I started with a bloody mary (10/10), then had scallops, follwed by hake fillet with white beans and chorizo and sherry jelly. All really good and reasonably priced. We were feeling a bit better the next day and went shopping in Bath and to the spa. As a result we were more prepared for a proper dinner. I had a bloody mary to start again, then smoked haddock and leek risotto. We had a free glass of English white wine with the starters, which was really good (of which more later). I had phesant for main course, which was alright, but the cauliflour cheese side dish was great especially when mixed with my chestnut mash. I had an apple pie sort of thing for dessert and then coffee and petit fours then a double brandy while sitting on the massive comfy sofas and reading the internet. Breakfast both days was excellent, including duck eggs from ducks that actually live at the pub. The English wine we were given was for sale as it was from a vinyard round the back of the pub. It was also really cheap given the quality of it so we bought 6 bottles. A great place and highly recommended.
