There is a reason this place is ONE star for me. No, I don't give away one stars on a whim. I understand a lot of places depend upon Yelp ratings. But this place deserves it. Please read other reviews and you will see the same things repeated. But if there is any place that deserves to lose business because of ethical infractions, its this one.
Reason? Staff, specifically one waiter with oiled-up hair and thick black rimmed glasses (Mr. Rude from now on). I am including the whole staff because they seem to turn a blind eye to all he does. Here is what happened:
We ordered veg Tamales and were served non-veg ones. Some of us don't eat meat because of our religious beliefs, so it is a big deal for us that we took a bite before we realized the error. Result? Mr. Rude walks over, calls the meat red pepper (blatant lie as another waitress had already told us seconds ago that it was meat!), refuses to apologize when called out, says there are 60 people in the restaurant (there were 32, I counted) and so he is not to blame! We are shocked by the behavior but we decide to let it go and just cut back on his tip. Thats where it hit the fan.
We were a party of 5, when our check arrived, we noticed that he had already added more than 18% gratuity. This was completely wrong, as - 1. We did not want to tip him well because of the experience, 2. the Menu clearly states that gratuity will be added to parties of SIX OR MORE and we were only 5. We very politely pointed this out (I must emphasize this to point out that we weren't still imagining things will get out of hand). Here's the conversation that happened next (look at the outright lies and excuses):
Us: The gratuity is for 6 or more people. It says here on the menu
Mr. Rude: Yes but I can charge more if I like
Us: How do you mean? We were not happy with the service and we do not want to pay that much and it clearly says on the menu that it for 6 or more
Mr. Rude: this menu is old
Us: then show us the new one
Mr. Rude: We don't have it right now
Us: then how do we believe you? You are charging us $23 gratuity. Are you saying you can charge us $50?
Mr. Rude: Yes, I can do what I want
Us: WHAT?
Mr. Rude: Are you saying you don't want to pay this bill?
Us: We want to pay the bill but not the gratuity
Mr. Rude: The gratuity is a part of the bill, if you don't want to pay the bill I will have to call the cops on you for shoplifting. I know every law in this country.
Us: WHAT are you talking about (shocked)? Can we please talk to your manager?
Mr. Rude: (hands us the menu) Manager is not in right now, please call the number on the menu...
This went on for some more time with him making stuff up (I joined the tables, restaurant does not have to declare gratuity before u eat, he SNATCHED the card off one of our female friends!! called us EVIL (!!) etc.). We had to pay the full gratuity and leave because we were getting late. Oh and he also FAKE DIALLED 911 (yes buddy we know cops ask for your name first, nobody was fooled by your call) to scare us away.
If you think this is unbelievable, then you can imagine how we felt. We have never felt so cheated and humiliated in a restaurant. One star. Or ZERO if possible. read more
