State of New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission - Long wait

AVOID. I've been to several DMVs in my 30 years living in NJ, but this was the worst experience…read moreI've ever had, hands down. It was chaotic, disorganized, mismanaged, and full of miserable people who seemed to take pleasure turning an already awful experience into absolute hell. It was the only location somewhat close to my home where I could get my license renewed and not have to wait several months out. Now I know why. First of all, there's nowhere to park. We pull up ahead of our appointment at 8:20 am and there's already no parking in the lot. There are people standing around outside in freezing weather with no official telling anyone what to do or where to wait. I walked to the door and said we had an appointment. Told to check in at the desk, which we did. Was told to fill out a paper and wait on a very long line that snaked around a corner. Got a number texted to me noting that I had checked in. Waited about 20 mins. Two people at the desk, but one was occupied with one person the entire time I was waiting, so really only one person was moving the line. Then I get up there and I had mistakenly written "USA" where I should have written my NJ county -- I thought it said "country." Woman lectured me that I filled out my paperwork too fast! Gave me a blank paper and told me to fill it out again and get to the back of the line. Commiserated with another woman who had "Dk Brown" next to eye color when it should have just said "Brown," and the woman made her get to the back of the line and fill out the form all over again too. The woman behind the counter was so rude to people who were not native English speakers in the worst kind of stereotypical way -- she kept screaming the English words at them slowly, as if this would help. This person should not be employed in New Jersey where we have a diverse population! After the second try, I made it through only to wait on another snaking line, even longer this time -- about 1/2 hr -- for the "ID check." There were four windows, but some times only 1 or 2 people were assisting. All along, I keep getting text messages like, "Your number will be called soon!" Turns out, that number I was texted meant nothing. I'm given ANOTHER number at the ID check. I went to sit down at one of the two crowded waiting areas. The woman behind the ID booth stopped me and said, "Oh, you want to sit over there (the other section) since they'll be calling people up from there." Of course there were no signs telling anyone where to go. This point took the longest, about an hour and 1/2 from the wait to being done. There was a woman with a clipboard calling numbers but what if I had sat down in the other section? Would I be waiting all day? The place was chaos. There was no help, no one answering questions, no signage, no guidance. Oh, but every now and then a woman would come out from some back room and scream at people waiting on line to have their paperwork filled out correctly. While I was waiting, a horrible person came over the loudspeaker and read off license plate numbers of people who they were going to call the police on because their cars were parked in the lot in non spots. My number was eventually called and I stood on yet another line to be seen by the people who actually process the license. Again a long wait. There were about 6 stations, but often just one or two people were working--sometimes none! I was finally next in line and was waiting in the same place as the person ahead of me when a woman came from out of nowhere and literally pulled hard on my shoulder and yanked me back, yelling "you're too close!" I wasn't blocking the aisle, there was no line I was over, no sign telling you where to wait. I can't believe she manhandled me! I think she didn't want me to see how few people were actually working at one time. Again, non-English speaking people were treated so rudely and held up the process because no one working there seemed to speak Spanish, which is crazy at a location like Newark. When leaving, there were people crowded in the vestibule and again were getting threatened by the staff to move or else. It is the fault of the people managing this place for being disorganized -- not the folks there to get their business done who are given no direction or help. Wound up talking to many folks during the wait and everyone said the same thing -- not just that staff were rude, but that they were demeaning, belittling and insulting. This should not be tolerated and isn't in other locations, which is disgusting. Whoever manages this place should be fired or reassigned to a desk in a dark corner somewhere to do no further harm to people. This DMV is an embarrassment to the state of New Jersey.

This wasn't as bad as I expected. The parking wasn't as terrible as I imagined and the wait times…read moreweren't impossible. Was I able to get the matter I went there to get handled resolved ? NO A huge resounding NO. but the staff was friendly enough.

But I did find…read morethe signage on the monorail from the Newark Airport to the Airport Train Station confusing. As did countless others. I suppose that is why they have staff standing at the stations yelling which tram is going where. Kind of cracked me up, but if you don't know English, it might not be as funny. Once I arrive at the train station, my train was cancelled. And the times on the screens did not match the times on the NJ Transit schedule (both on their printed and displayed schedule and on their website), so I also found that pretty confusing. Once you enter the train station area, you cannot go back into the main vestibule where there is a pop-up Dunkin' Donuts. Also a bit frustrating when you consider all the confusion and cancellations. However, the staff their were nice and helpful, as many people were confused. Plus, noshing on some Dunking while being delayed is better than noshing on nothing.

I think was more economical than taking an Uber/Lyft, but more importantly the time would have been constant. Don't have to worry about traffic jams or accidents to make the commute time unpredictable. That's the good part. The bad part is that the train seems kind of old and dirty. There's no digital billboard/message system to show you the system map, where you are and what the next stop is. And they didn't even announce the stops on the intercom. I did my homework ahead of time and knew how many stops there were in between EWR and NY Penn Station. Then we went underground and I assumed this was us going under the Hudson River. And as we approached Penn Station and the train was slowing down I was looking around for a sign to confirm I was in the right place. A passenger shouldn't have to know all the stops ahead of time or look out the window to see where they're at. NJ Transit needs to improve in this area.

(had the same experience at Bayside) You are told that you can have a visit, then you call the day of to confirm for them to tell you that you cannot. I understand that the people in there are not their family members, but to tell your child they can go and see their father, then to be told the day of they can not because they made a mistake is a horrible way to treat anyone. I would of drove over an hour away with two 11 year olds to be turned away. Good thing i happened to call and follow-up that day. Instead of apologizing they are rude and talk over you. They transfer you to their supervisor who just again says i don't know who gave you that information and ends up hanging up. Tried to schedule another visit for the following week, told by 3 different employees the visit is approved, called today to confirm, and that employee was wrong as well. Why don't you train your employees to know their job and the rules so they don't have to do this to families? This is my first time having to deal with the NJDOC and honestly it is the worst experience that I have had. They need to really work on this for the family members, but in all reality, they don't care and it has been very clear in every facility and staff member that I have spoken to. I truly hope that if they ever find themselves in this situation that they are treated with more kindness and at the very least the correct information. The family members who are already dealing with so much deserve better.

Once submitted, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) will review it, and you'll then need to schedule an interview at a Global Entry Enrollment Center. Ours was at Newark Liberty International Airport. It's mandatory to arrive on time, so we parked at Terminal B short-term parking to make things easier. The Global Entry Enrollment Center is located in Terminal B on the ground floor, behind the domestic baggage carousel. If you get a little turned around as we did, just stop by the welcome help kiosk, and someone will gladly point you in the right direction. Be sure to bring your current passport and your driver's license (or a bill showing your current address). After checking in, you'll be seated until an officer comes out and calls the time of your scheduled appointment. Once inside, they'll fingerprint you (via digital scan), review your application, and ask a few routine questions. The process is straightforward and painless. It is essentially a background and integrity check to confirm you're a low-risk traveler before granting the five-year membership. My interview was brief and professionally handled. Everything ran like clockwork and was completely hassle-free. I was in and out within five minutes. Overall, I was very impressed by the staff's friendliness and professionalism, and by how efficient the entire process was.
