I have been dining at Tryst Cafe for years. I cannot believe that I have not written a review yet! Honestly this was a great experience while other visits were perhaps not entirely positive. I stopped for a happy hour cocktail, snack and takeout. The place was empty at 430 on a Friday. Although it's December 23rd, there is sunshine and 67 degrees on the sheltered patio. Margarita, beer battered green beans $7HH with chipotle ranch (excellent) and a nice dose of AHHHHH. My server was friendly, knowledgeable and apparently also my bartender. Margarita $8HH was strong and classic reposado. Server checks back to I can bask in the sunny patio and enjoy my margie and snacks She answered several menu questions then took a takeout order for a Bacon BBQ Burger, medium, with sweet potato tots. I asked for the bun, bacon and sauce on the side so travel without sogginess. And later I added a small salad with their cilantro ranch dressing. Server happily accommodated it all. Check was handled promptly so the hot takeout food didn't wait for me to pay. Packaging was very careful and the bag was sturdy. Server asked if I wanted utensils. Got home with everything intact. Salad was spring mix with carrots, charred corn and tomato. Very fresh. Cilantro ranch is drinkable, it's so good. (On previous visits I have enjoyed it with the excellent steak walnut and blue salad) Burger was cooked just right for reheating at home to medium as ordered. Order was prepared exactly to my request, with the bun all nice and toasty dry on the side for assembly at home with the bacon and sauce. The sweet potato tots are the bomb!! The BBQ sauce was fine and burger had good cheese balance. Thick tomato, generous lettuce and fried onions on top. Beef quality can't be beat, and this one fed two adults at home. I also brought home a few green beans which held up surprisingly well. I thought about ordering more of the delicious Chipotle ranch dip but I refrained. Yum!! Server recognized immediately that I was a ranch gal. Lol. Other visits over the years have revealed a heavy tortilla soup, not crispy buffalo cauliflower but amazing breakfasts and coffee. First time at Tryst Cafe for a friend's birthday dinner. Quiet Sunday evening, nice patio and inside dining. It was still happy hour time so we had buffalo cauliflower and riblets. Hands down, the riblets were perfectly cooked and seasoned with a slight kick. The cauliflower was roasted and served with buffalo and other dipping sauces. Split a sweet potato veggie burger as an open face sandwich with onion and avocado. The other half was the bison burger with gorgonzola cheese, crispy onion and a bourbon sauce. Loved the bison burger flavors. Service was very good. Lots of menu choices. Prices were reasonable. Birthday desert was a nice touch. Will be back. Put this one on your list. read more

I have been visiting Tryst cafe for the past 5+ years. Their food quality is exceptionally good. I have tried their most vegetarian menu options. Ambience is very clean both indoor and outdoor. Their staff members are very friendly. My most favorite is their vegetarian omelet with sourdough along with coffee. Very unfortunate for the service given today , tryst cafe was one of my go to places for breakfast and to get work done in north Phoenix. Today with 6 tables open inside and several available outside they chose to refuse to allow me to sit at one of the larger tables to get my work done and enjoy breakfast. Their single tables cannot accommodate food, beverage, a computer and note pad needed. Explaining that I desired a larger table to get work done and enjoy breakfast they insisted it was reserved for larger parties. It's 10:30, after breakfast rush and before lunch rush. Tryst Cafe is such a gem. My husband, who has celiac disease (gluten allergy), and I have come here for breakfast/brunch a few times. Everything is delicious and fresh. The breakfast burrito with roasted potatoes is great and can be modified to be vegetarian. And we LOVE the quinoa banana pancake! They also have green iced tea. Yum! The patio is in the shade all day and is cool even in the summer when it's hot because they have powerful mister fans (see photo). So if you want to be able to eat outdoors in the summer this is your place!! The menu is pretty large, lots of options, and servers are always nice, friendly and accommodating. Shout out to Christiane for always taking great care of us! Overall a solid local restaurant (they have a location in Chandler too). I just realized they are open for dinner too! One of the biggest concerns is the pricing inconsistencies. Multiple regulars, including myself, have noticed that when served by Mercedes, we are charged more for the same meals than when ordering from other servers. This has been tested by various patrons, confirming that overcharging is a pattern, not an isolated mistake. Additionally, Mercedes consistently fails to serve specialty lattes or bar drinks, and it's clear that certain tables receive preferential treatment while others are ignored. When politely expressing concerns about dietary preferences, such as avoiding rice oil due to its inflammatory effects, we were met with rudeness and arguments rather than accommodation or professionalism. Many other breakfast and brunch spots have embraced healthier alternatives, yet Tryst remains resistant while continuing to market itself as a health-conscious café. Another ongoing issue is the negative experience for those looking to watch games while dining. ( They have multiple TVs) On multiple occasions, after spending over $20 on a basic burger with no special additions, we were met with attitude when requesting to watch a game on the café's TVs. Instead of simply changing the channel, Mercedes would rudely throw the remote at us, expecting us to figure out the system ourselves, despite never having operated it before. More often than not, we were left paying for an overpriced meal while being unable to enjoy the game we came to watch, as Mercedes would rather play YouTube videos of her choosing. The host, who goes by "Tryst" ( very misleading) , further contributes to the decline in customer experience. Despite presenting herself as if she owns the café, her demeanor is unprofessional, and conversations overheard by multiple patrons do not reflect the level of service expected from a high-end establishment. Lastly, the quality of food no longer aligns with the café's pricing or marketing. Many of the ingredients used are not organic or high-quality, despite the café's branding suggesting otherwise. Tryst may have started with good intentions, but the reality is that better alternatives exist in the city at more reasonable prices, without the poor customer treatment. After over a decade of supporting this establishment, at least eight to ten of us have decided never to return. As word spreads, that number will continue to grow. The combination of overpricing, misleading claims, and consistently poor service has made it clear that Tryst Café is no longer worth supporting. read more

I want to give this spot five stars for making a good show at including vegan and vegetarian dishes, with creativity; however, the dishes just didn't quite hit right. A little more experimentation needed. The tamales - it's rare to find vegan tamales in a restaurant; I have ordered them and had them shipped but never seen them in a restaurant -- were a bit unattractive in presentation and had a metallic tang aftertaste. I only ate one of the two. The hummus variety plate was also unattractive in presentation and while I so much appreciated that three flavors were provided, the beet flavor was unappetizing to me (however, my friend ate it so I am sure they have a fan club). Service was okay though a little testy (maybe that was our fault; we were on edge as we were heading to the airport soon). Very cute place, was able to get a table immediately on a busy weekend so that was a plus! On the particular weekend morning we came they appeared to be possibly short staffed our server was busy as a bee and did the best she could and it was fine (I understand being overwhelmed) my mother in-law had the organic oatmeal and appeared to enjoy it. My partner had the breakfast sandwich and said it was average. I had the Spanish omelette with chorizo, Jack cheese, grilled onions, red peppers and sour cream. It was very good not too overcooked but the problem was the chorizo was delicious! But it hardly had any in it I felt like 4 bites and I was out of chorizo. The potatoes were average this trip. Breakfast with the Tryst Cafe gang was a fine start to the day. Coffees came nicely presented wearing a napkin & spoon hat. Kinda cute & very different. I went with strawberry custard stuffed french toast. Taste was fine & whipped cream cheese filling was lusciously smooth. Portion of two stuffed french toast slices was enough to call it a meal, albeit a somewhat light one. Other party members had a quinoa pancake and an avocado toast breakfast. They gave passing grades to their meals & liked them fine. Decor is vibrant & so was our waitress. A bright & happy lady. Downside, as in so many other eateries around Phoenix, is price. A couple slices of stuffed french toast is a bit of a tough sell when flying just shy of $15 for the pair. The food was good, but I'm not sure it was that good. read more

The Tryst Café is a welcoming, small, homey place that makes you feel quite welcome. Also the service and drink refills were quite quick. We stopped by to beat the heat. We ordered the Hummus Trio appetizer. This was quite refreshing. We substituted the cucumber slices for pita bread triangles - a great choice. The cucumber was fresh, moist and ample. The three types of hummus: red beet, cilantro serrano and traditional, were all good. The red beet was flavorful yet didn't have the overpowering flavor of beet - just a nice touch of flavor. The cilantro serrano also wasn't overpowering hot or herby - just the right amount of mild heat and earthiness for a hot day. The traditional hummus was mildly flavored. They say they make theirs in-house. We will see. The staff is nice. I was seated right away. An older couple came in after and said they had a reservation. Who makes a reservation for breakfast? We visited the cafe on a Sunday early afternoon. It was busy but we were able to get a table right away. The service was excellent. When we ordered our entrees and mentioned we were vegan, the server recommended ordering the summer rolls, which were not on the printed menu. We ordered them and they were delicious! We also ordered the Asian Jackfruit bowl and the Grilled Chicken and Goat Cheese Salad modified to be vegan by substituting mushrooms and avocado for the chicken and cheese. Our party ordered two omelettes and two salads. The sides that came with our omelette were pretty tiny, coming in what I would describe as a dipping sauce container (you know those plastic cups you put ketchup in) so if you're hungry I recommend ordering something extra. The salad portions were quite large, and there was plenty of protein. Our server was very friendly and attentive. She repeated our order back to us, offered to go boxes unprompted, and checked in throughout the meal. The restaurant itself is a little bit cramped, and there was only one bathroom / gender (unless I missed something). If the restaurant was busy, I imagine the restroom wait could become quite long. Otherwise the place is nice, but noisy. The music volume makes it hard to have a conversation. I'm giving the place 5-stars because the food was good, service was great, and the few things that I do mention are not true detractors. While the portions may be lighter for some dishes, the prices are affordable- so go ahead, get that extra side and enjoy! read more

We're almost never up in this area but needed to pick something up, so we decided to stop into Tryst on our way for a quick breakfast. What drew us in was the expansive gluten free menu, because it's not always super easy for the dude to eat at breakfast places. It was a Saturday morning around 9:30, and we were sat immediately. It filled in more as we were eating but it never got crazy busy. We started with coffee, which was tasty but I thought serving it in Irish coffee mugs was a little bit of a weird choice. I opted for the breakfast sandwich, and added avocado to it. It was gargantuan and so delicious; I really wasn't expecting basically an entire omelette on a croissant, but that's what I got. The bacon was delightfully thick cut and fried perfectly for a sandwich, and the avocado was a great addition. It was one of the tastier breakfast sandwiches I had in a while. The potatoes and onion on the side were tasty, but I think could've benefited a lot from smaller potato chunks. The dude had the lox delight on gluten free toast, and said it was really yummy and tasted shockingly fresh considering we're in a landlocked state. I thought it was just a touch pricier than what the food was worth, but nothing outrageous. Service was good, with friendly waitstaff and a quick turnaround time. We probably won't be back to this location because it's so far from us, but we did get holiday gift certificates that we can redeem at the Chandler location--so we'll definitely be making a stop there soon! read more
