Pirate used to be very good but the equipment is very worn out these days…read more I went for a drum session after a few years off the kit and the first studio I rented had a destroyed snare head. Their customer service (via WhatsApp) got me into another studio, upgraded size, free of charge. This one had clamps that wouldn't hold the toms, the screws were totally stripped out on the kick pedal and the whole kit would start falling apart midway through a song. They moved me to another room which was missing a bunch of equipment and had hi-hats for crash cymbals so I asked to be moved back to the previous. I was able to limp through on a few tracks but eventually the kick pedal wouldn't stay in place for longer than a verse or chorus and the rack toms were swinging around in their stripped clamps and the start/stop was making this really pointless. I asked for a 50% refund which I did NOT receive, they gave it back as credit towards next time. Here's the deal: I will be back because they're the best option nearby. Band rehearsal spaces are a tough business. The gear gets absolutely thrashed and maintenance takes both specialized knowledge, money, and care. It seems like their on-site manager either doesn't care, doesn't have the budget to fix things, or has no idea what they're doing. Pirate's the only option nearby that doesn't feel like I'm going to get robbed, stabbed, or tetanus. I'm going to start building up my own small gear to supplement what they can't seem to take care of (cymbals, snare, kick pedal) and hope the problems stop there.

I was surprised to not only find a studio with great gear, but one with a producer (Matt) who would let me have access to the equipment myself... without his constant presence. He got me started and let me be... which was exactly what I was hoping for. I didn't think I would be comfortable with someone else in the studio, having never recorded outside my own house before... After a few visits I became comfortable enough to work with him one on one and he offered me a lot of help that I didn't think I wanted, but in the end became very influential in my finished product. I'll spare plugging myself here, but it came out better than expected. For me, The Village is probably the best studio experience I have had as a client. All of the set…read moreup, booking, session setup, logistics are taken care of the moment you step in. The people working as your assistant and runners are all talented, top notch audio engineers who know how to pretty much troubleshoot every situation. I got called in as a guest sound engineer for an acoustic session and my assistant got everything set up and ready to go even before I walked in for the call time. In some studios, this is not what happens, you get there and you start from scratch, with the Village, you get your set up exactly as you want it and you have a whole team of people ready to help you out whenever you need to. They have an awesome mic locker, a lot of history, great people and a super warm and friendly but genuine vibe. The people are crazy chill but know how to fix a problem. And did I mention that they are relatively affordable? Okay maybe I can say that they probably offer the best value for money with the studios around LA. I don't ever remember being less stressed in a studio session than when I do one here.

What more could you ask for! His studio was extremely fresh and clean, with such inspiring vibes to work from. In those couple of hours I got to spend in our session, I felt happy to be in this space. Austens humble approach made him very comfortable to work with. I asked Austen for some advice on a few of the commercials, in regards to tone, etc. He was more than happy to take some time with me, giving an exampled read through of vocal characteristics he felt would work for each different commercial script, in order to get my best work out there. This was all before we even got started with recording. Once we got to recording, it seemed effortless for him to help guide me through any vocal notes he had and tweak things here and there, this guy really knows what he's doing when it comes to Voiceover work.
