I've recorded at studios from NYC to San Francisco, and I've never had a better recording experience than I did yesterday at Foreword Recording Studio here in LA. We had a 10-hour session and Tim, the engineer, was like that helpful sidekick you wish you always had - involved and engaged the whole time making sure you're getting everything you want and need for your project. Not only does he know his stuff (not just the gear but music theory, harmony, VO tips) but he actually made the process FUN. He's like the exact opposite of that dude that hits record then checks Facebook. The vocalists I had coming in were so impressed with the studio - the design is modern but the vibe is totally chill and comfortable. I found the studio randomly on Yelp and booked just based on the reviews - and now I can't imagine recording anywhere else. On top of all this, their rates are incredibly reasonable. I had an amazing experience with Foreword Recording Studio! I booked a full day so that we could record/mix our EP. Our Engineer was Gareth and his assistant Sam. They were both super nice and very professional. They even called beforehand to ask us some questions about how we wanted things set up so that they could take care of the setup prior to us showing up (which is HUGE, since this can eat away your paid time). When we arrived, we instantly clicked and came up with a plan for the day. We stuck through the plan for the most part and ended up with 2 very solid recorded/mixed tracks and 1 solid recording with about 50% of the mixing done. Not bad at all for a day's work. I highly recommend the studio and will absolutely be back. read more

I needed to record some spoken word intros for a piece I was doing last week. I looked around West LA for an affordable studio... I would have tried to do this myself, but don;t have the equipment necessary. I was surprised to not only find a studio with great gear, but one with a producer (Matt) who would let me have access to the equipment myself... without his constant presence. He got me started and let me be... which was exactly what I was hoping for. I didn't think I would be comfortable with someone else in the studio, having never recorded outside my own house before... After a few visits I became comfortable enough to work with him one on one and he offered me a lot of help that I didn't think I wanted, but in the end became very influential in my finished product. I'll spare plugging myself here, but it came out better than expected. I recommend them to anyone looking for a cozy place to record in a laid back, friendly environment with a full protools setup.. the price was the best I've found without traveling to the ghetto... read more

For our project, we had already recorded our instrument stems, so we came to Foreword Studios to track vocals and for mixing and mastering services. We worked with Tim in Studio B. Studio B is the more affordable studio at Foreword, so it is a bit cozy... if we were a five piece band and all of us wanted to be in the room, we would probably be fighting for couch space. But, thankfully, for our project, there were only 2 of us, so it was not an issue. The studio is nice and new, with a state-of-the-art digital mixing console, running the most up-to-date release of Pro Tools. The mic and preamp are really high quality and have a really good/crisp sound. The isolation booth was nice and clean, you could tell attention was given to acoustics. As an engineer, Tim is very talented . He quickly sized up our needs for the project and had us in the booth recording. Tim's ability to work quickly (more bang for your buck, when billing is hourly is a huge plus), proficiency with Pro Tools, ear for the best take, and his knowlege of music theory (he helped us write a harmony line for our chorus) really stood out and helped us get through our recording session quickly with a very high quality result. As a mixer Tim is equally talented. He gave us a rough mix when we finished our recording session that day. While it sounded really good, after several listens we had a number of comments. Tim did a great job of understanding and contextualizing our comments and using his technical skill to execute the changes. By the end of the process, we had a final mix that was exactly what we were looking for. Throughout the process, Tim always promptly communicated with us and always gave us an estimate of costs before incurring them. I also recommend Foreword's mastering service. The record has a major record label release quality in that regard. Lastly, and to some, most importantly, Foreword was affordable. We stayed on budget! And we came away with a recording that we are very happy with. I definitely recomend Tim and Foreword Studios for all of your recording needs! read more

Probably my favorite studio I've rented so far. I don't expect studios to be in good condition because there are many artists that go through studio spaces and lots of equipment that gets moved around. However, this space is immaculate. Also, being a woman, I loved the fact that the restroom was super clean. The vibe is cool and inspiring. Both studios A and B are equally awesome, and the place looks brand new. I met Matt and Garreth, both of whom are highly professional as well as nice and accommodating (thanks for moving the drum set for us, Matt!). Great place, will definitely be back! read more

Tim and the team at Foreword Studios are incredible. I shot a short film where one of my lavalier mics malfunctioned and screwed up audio for one actor. As a result, we had to ADR 30 lines of dialogue. Enter Tim, who assisted us in recording. The studio is great and Tim was a great engineer. We completed all the lines in a little under three hours. My dialogue editor who lives up in Northern California was ecstatic about the work. Whenever I need ADR, I'll definitely be reaching out to Tim and Foreword studios again. read more

Everyone at Foreword was incredibly friendly and helpful, answering all of my questions and calls when I was booking a studio. The whole staff is knowledgable, attentive, and welcoming. On top of the great customer service, the studio is beautiful, clean, and fun (they even have a chalk wall in their tiny courtyard lounge). We shot a short package for a show involving our talent singing in a booth. The audio recorded during the session turned out amazing, thanks to their technician, who helped with playback, picking the music tracks, and recording. It was the perfect backdrop for a recording shoot, and we were blown away with everything they had to offer. read more

We've used it a few times as a rehearsal space and the price is reasonable enough that we were able to make that work and have a great recording of our rehearsal. Amazing studio/staff. This place has awesome gear and great vibes. Me and my band recorded our EP here and had the best experience. Gareth was our engineer and we couldn't have worked with anyone better! He really took the time to get to know our music and what we were going for (he listened to all of our demos AND even came out to see a show a week before recording started!) Gareth did such a fantastic job! I've recorded a few times at Foreword now. It's easily the best studio on the west side, in terms of value and quality. I've looked into other places just to see, but I keep coming back. They have the best equipment -- full birch drum kit, guitars galore (gibson, prs, fender, warwick), yamaha 88-key keyboard and plenty of great recording gear. I like that Matt (engineer, producer) makes suggestions for recording, production and mixing. I usually have an idea in my head and he is able to help me shape it into something catchy and effective. At this point, I've recorded about 2 albums worth of music with him and I couldn't be happier. My only caution is that sometimes it takes awhile to get a timeslot there, since he's got a bit of a baglog of clients often. It's worth the wait though! read more

Please Beware Before you go here and Read this Full review to know why. Last year I went to Foreword Studio in hopes of getting a solid mix to a Track of mine because the last engineer i went to pretty much left me hangin with an unfinished product. I explained my situation and the guys booked me for a session to come in. Unfortunately, I left there in even worse shape than when I went in. I think it was Tim who was the guy in charge of the Session and when he asked me what I'm trying to do with the track as far as when it's done, I was basically told it would be impossible to achieve the Goal that I had set out and did so in extensive detail, repeatedly. I was paying 50 Dollars an Hour to this Guy to do a job and instead my song was literally ripped apart in every way. I went in there hopeful and confident and walked out being miserable and feeling super down. I know what some people might think and say as far as that I should have tougher skin etc. But dude, this is NOT a way any musician should be treated when they are going to what they think is a professional environment and paying for a service to be done when sharing their art with a complete stranger in hopes of getting a better mix. I mean it's not like I was going on American Idol and singing some cheesy cover to Simon Cowell to get ridiculed. I wanna add that I was really cool, chill, and respectful to this Guy and in no way shape or form was deservent of such horrible treatment. What ended up happening was he said he's going to reimburse the Second hour that I paid for because he didn't want to continue working on it a minute more. I mean, if this isn't something he wanted to do in the first place, just be upfront and say hey I've got a lot of stuff to work on etc, but don't trash my stuff and spit of my aspirations. I also want to say that I'm a cancer survivor and during this time, a friend of mine lost her battle with this terrible disease leaving a child behind with no longer having a mother. I was in a sad place at the time and the experience that I had at Foreward pretty much kicked me in the gut when i was already down. It took me a while to be able to write this review as I've been in and out of a depressive state of mind since last year. I'm not stupid, i know what I was up against in the Music Business especially in this day and age, we all know that it's not an easy thing to Break into, but I have news for you Tim, nothing is impossible. Sometimes things aren't meant to be for a certain reason or purpose, but no one should be so thoughtlessly hurtful to another for no reason at all whatsoever. It's just not right. For the first time in my Life, I started questioning my Musical abilities in a very negative way to the point where I thought about just giving up and I haaate to have to say that it was because of this experience alone because it wasn't just that, but it for sure had a Lot to do with it. I know this is a crazy long review, but this has been something i've wanted to share for a long time so that other Musicians and Artists will know the type of place that they are going to. And I'm not saying they have done bad work and acted this way to all the people who have gone here, but unfortunately for me this was in fact the case and it's my upright duty to speak the truth so that you can do what you want with it and make your decision accordingly. Last thing that I wanted to mention in case anyone is wondering is that I am currently in a better place right now in my Life. Mental health is no joke and as we've seen in recent years, it is not something to be taken lightly. Music is my Love and biggest passion and if it's the same for you, Don't ever let anyone tell you that you're not good enough or you can't achieve whatever it is you have set out for yourself. Love yourself and share that Love and passion with others in the most positive way and always continue to Rock On! read more
