I had a hard drive physically fail on me (dropping a heavy object on your laptop will do that..), so doing a wipe at home was not an option. The clerk let me watch the machine crush the drive into a million little pieces. I also brought in my bag of "misc. electronic crap" (old batteries, ink cartidges, CD-ROMs from the 2000s, broken remotes, etc.) -- she took everything (even the batteries that were leaking acid), plus did the drive shredding, for a flat $20. To some, that may seem steep, but try going to "electronics recycling day" at the Fairfax County dump -- you'd nearly spend as much in gas idling a gus-guzzler in the hour-long line. Plus, the peace of mind that any confidential information from your computer has been DoD-level destroyed is worth it.

I am writing this review to warn other businesses about my extremely disappointing experience with…read moreShred Ace. What should have been a simple shredding service turned into a frustrating ordeal marked by poor customer service, confrontational staff, and questionable billing practices. When I brought legitimate concerns to their attention, issues that were simple to resolve and should have been handled professionally, I was met with confrontational staff who made me feel like I was the problem. Rather than listening to my concerns and working toward a solution, their team was defensive and dismissive. After my initial negative experience, I left an honest review reflecting my dissatisfaction. The owner then reached out to me, and after our conversation, I kindly removed my review as a gesture of good faith. Looking back, I now believe this outreach was solely intended to get me to remove my negative feedback, not to genuinely address my concerns or improve their service. Here's where things went from bad to worse. I decided to terminate my service with Shred Ace due to the ongoing issues. They picked up my final shredding materials and their container on October 8th, and I was explicitly told there would be no charges applied. Over a month and a half later, I received a bill from them. This is completely unacceptable. When a company tells you there will be no charges, you should be able to trust that commitment. Sending a surprise bill more than six weeks after pickup, contradicting what I was told, demonstrates a serious lack of integrity and professionalism. There are several other shredding companies that make this process very simple, treat their customers with respect, and honor their word. I have since switched providers and the difference is night and day. I strongly advise businesses to consider other shredding service providers. Your time, money, and peace of mind are worth more than the headaches this company creates.

The email and phone communication with the EcoScan Operations Director was prompt, professional, and included all the details I needed. That, plus the location of the company in VA, made me pick them. My DV tapes were also shipped back to me promptly. I recommend their services wholeheartedly and will personally look for ways to use them in the future for other projects related to document/video management. =========== Update in Mar 2022, i.e. a couple of months after the previous review - Just did another project with Ecoscan, including digitization of a set of decade- old PAL VHS tapes - I am happy with the outcome, as the statement of work was completed on time and within budget.
