For the eco-friendly and/or paranoid, this place is great. Regarding customer service: the staff cares about the job, and takes it seriously. (And gave me directions back to Springfield.) I had a hard drive physically fail on me (dropping a heavy object on your laptop will do that..), so doing a wipe at home was not an option. The clerk let me watch the machine crush the drive into a million little pieces. I also brought in my bag of "misc. electronic crap" (old batteries, ink cartidges, CD-ROMs from the 2000s, broken remotes, etc.) -- she took everything (even the batteries that were leaking acid), plus did the drive shredding, for a flat $20. To some, that may seem steep, but try going to "electronics recycling day" at the Fairfax County dump -- you'd nearly spend as much in gas idling a gus-guzzler in the hour-long line. Plus, the peace of mind that any confidential information from your computer has been DoD-level destroyed is worth it. read more

If you have a home business, produce medical or legal records or infrequently have large amounts of shreddable information like before/after a move, a shredding service is the way to go. I did not evaluate electronic shredding, like HDD's, but the service is there as well. The retail front of ShredStation is mostly closed, so while it is still possible to drop off papers, you should set up an appointment, regardless if you drop off (which if you have a job essentially means Saturday) or have pick up service. This somewhat restricts occasional users but the market in this category is primarily service for businesses. While there is no stated minimum, the rate is $20 for an A4 Box of paper and it isn't efficient in my opinion to set up an appointment for any less. I thought I read a minimum, but I'm sure you can call to arrange something. The cost benefit analysis is that a cheap home shredder is already $30-$40. Good office shredders cost $700-$1000 and still require reasonable amounts of feeding. Wood chipper shredders are obviously in another class that only large organizations and services like this provide. I've shredded vaults of documents, but it took hours, and for the cost of a small crappy shredder (which btw doesn't crosscut and therefore doesn't actually shred and protect your or someone else's information), you can make the problem go away in maybe 30 minutes of your time. read more

Am moving and am shocked how many years of financial documents I had kept. I would have been at my shredder for a month. I brought 2 average size boxes of documents, some still in envelopes, paid about 26 bucks and got to watch them get shredded. Worth the drive and price for peace of mind. Nice people. read more

My shred box finally got full again so I came back to get it shredded. I didn't know but I also would've brought my old laptop hard drive to get shredded too. I was going to throw it away but wasn't comfortable. I wiped it but wasn't sure. Scott was very helpful and knowledgeable also. The store is located right on the corner and wasn't hard to find with the big green truck parked right out front. The greatest part is he recycles everything. I went by here with a couple boxes full of paper. They weighed it, walked it behind the glass where you could see the shredder and fed it through the machine. Pretty simple process, would've taken me hours to feed it through a personal machine. Prices seem reasonable for paper, I didn't ask for other prices, but saw they take most electronics, and can destroy hard drives. Hours are a little tricky for individual use, but a good deal if you can make it. read more

Nice that they come to your home to pick up your shredding but don't expect them to load it in to their truck. Guy wanted to know how heavy the bags were and me-who is 106 lbs- picked one up and said not that heavy. Their recycling service involves selling DVDs/LPs/CDs/electronics people bring them to recycle over Craigslist. Anyway, ShredStation Express posted an ad for a lot vinyl records. We told them we would come by at a set time and buy the lot, and they agreed to this. Long story short, we drove out to ShredStation Express and was told upon arriving (early, I might add) in a very rude, dismissive manner that someone else bought the records a couple hours earlier. That's fine--I understand they are a business and want to turn over merchandise--but it would have been nice if they had emailed or called or something to let us know after the records had been purchased by someone else and saved us a trip out there (hey, guess what, I don't hang out in depressing industrial parks for kicks), or if they had just apologized when we arrived. read more

I watched him shred my 3 boxes of paper then break open my old laptops to shred the hard drive. I watched as he put it in the machine and it tore it to pieces. No one is getting that information! I got rid of my useless but personal paper for last five years in just a few minutes. They are awesome. Mark from ShredStation Express took my boxes directly from my apartment. A few hours later, I received a certification of destruction including how much my "junks" weighed - a whoopie 111 lbs. Most of shredding places require you to drive to their local stores during their business hours. For the price and the type of service, ShredStation is definitely one of the best choices. Great Service, I highly recommend them! I had 5 boxes of business records left from cleaning out my parent's house when they moved to a nursing home. I called about 6 shredding services, but my 5 boxes was too small an order or I could pay 100's of dollars for a minimum pickup. I emailed Shred Station and they responded immediately. We have a ShredStation console that is emptied monthly. ShredStation always calls a day ahead and confirms a 1/2 hour window of when they will arrive, which allows us a last minute opportunity to fill the console. They are always on time and very courteous. Previously we used a small office shredder which was noisy and subject to jamming and breaking down. This is a much more efficient way to secure and destroy our documents and saves a lot of employee time. read more

There is not doubt in my mind that the services Shred Station Express provide is needed in the community, conveniently located and reasonably priced. The mobile service it provides to it's customers is great also. So why the 1 Star? Customer Service, Cleanliness and Negativity. I set up a shred event for a local community at the request of the manager. I called ShredStation Express and spoke with a with gentlemen named Scott. He was very pleasant and knowledgeable. I had called several places that day and I liked how professional he was and when I briefed management, although they wanted to go with someone else, after informing them that this business was in the local area and I was very happy with the way Scott conducted business, they took my recommendation to go with ShredStation Express. When it was time to set up the appointment, I spoke with a woman. I gave her the same information I gave Scott and went with the service Scott recommended for us. However, she gave me different information. She was not as professional and knowledgeable as Scott. She was very busy so she had to call me back a few times and we finally got on the same sheet of music. I asked for her to invoice me but it took some time for us to receive the invoice. By this time we were wondering if we should go with ShredStaion Express. The communication with the woman I spoke with was not super bad but it was not the best either. I finally called and got Scott on the phone and when I informed him I was waiting on an invoice, He assured me he would take care of it and it was done. I was more at ease after that. Management requested I go check the place out before we had them come out to our location for the event. When I got there, a woman came out. I went over everything with her and was ready to pay for the event, but in the process she was very rude and ended up scheduling me for something that I did not ask for. She insisted that I was wrong and I asked for what she had us scheduled for and I knew that was not the case. I kept all my notes from my conversation with her and Scott. I saw that they had old items in the showcase and throughout the store and they were really dusty and gave the appearance of a dirty old pawn shop. I didn't' mention it to her. I talked to her about Shredding and management educating our residence on the importance of it and she told me that our residents wouldn't really listen and would not think about it until they had to move and insinuated that even if we gave them instructions on what to put in the boxes they would still mess it up so why bother. I was so shocked that she would say something so negative. She walked over and sat at a desk and I as I was looking at the items I asked "So, recycle too?" She responded to me "If you read the signs in the store you would see we do." That was the icing on the cake. I looked at her and she would not make eye contact with me. In order to keep from going HAM, I walked out. There was someone in the back of the store. I'm not sure who it was but I could hear them working in the back. I can honestly say, that this woman was disrespectful, not helpful, had a negative attitude toward the business and my clients. She completely lacked customer service skills. This was totally opposite of the experience I had with Scott. I think this place is actually pretty good. But my experience with the woman working there was horrid. I did some research on the is place since I visited and I have found that I am not the only one with this complaint. I have received great feedback about the service they provide and their conversations with Scott. But have gotten that the woman there is hit and miss. Some say she is ok and other say she is not great to deal with. I was actually hoping I was wrong about it and that it was just an isolated event or she was just having a bad day. We are all entitled to a bad day every now and then. Although my experience was an epic fail! I am hoping that this place can correct it's customer service issues and improve. I don't want to write this place off for good because it provides such an important service to the community and Scott was very pleasant. I hoping that when another member from my staff or myself visit this location, we can give them a better rating. We will revisit at a later time and see if we can add some more stars. read more
