Walked in on a Thursday for a consultation and was able to talk to 2 artist. I like this because i was able to get a feel for their different styles and they helped direct me to the person who would do the better job. i came back 2 days later to give my deposit because i didn't have cash on Thursday. DON'T FORGET CASH FOR YOUR DEPOSIT!! Anyway Saturday is for walk ins and luckily there was no one waiting so I decided to just go for it and get something in addition to my initial request. Manta Rae was awesome and sweet and a joy to chat with while i was being inked. I can't wait to go back in September for my larger piece!! Oh yea, these artists are great and popular so if you want something other than a flash piece just know the appointment will be at least 2 months from when you go in to make the appointment. Also one of the days while i was waiting for something I saw someone come in and ask for something and another artist (don't know their name) told them honestly that no one here would do a tattoo that small on their finger because honestly it won't stick. Had Batty as my artist. She was super cool over email, very receptive to my reference, and I was excited. The day came and when we actually met, her vibes were so off. She gave me and my partner the stink eye as soon as we walked through the door, which was uncomfortable to try and brush off. Next, she said some elements of my reference weren't tattoo-able. Which was kind of a lot to process LAST MINUTE given that I was under the impression she was able to do my tattoo exactly as referenced. That being said, the pros were strictly that Batty did a fantastic job with my tattoo. I'm very satisfied with the outcome and the reasonable pricing. I just hate that my recounting of getting ny tattoo has to be tainted by Batty's poor manners and attitude. I just want to be clear that my tattoo is beautiful and I get many compliments, which is what I based my actual star rating on. I want to suggest finding another artist if you're not good at navigating grouchy artists. read more

Update 17 September 2021: Austin Police Department is now investigating theft by tattoo artist "Batty". Batty was scheduled to do a back piece. After paying her nearly $1500 through the pandemic we decided not to get it dye to lack of professionalism and safety issues. She has refused to give back the money. Had to threaten legal action before she agreed to a payment plan, so we'll be getting the money over the next year and a half. Not worth it for her "quality work". Need to talk to the owner and have had no response after several calls and emails. Do I want to go there again? Absolutely not. Update. Finally received a response. It remains to be seen how or if my issue will be resolved. Update: After hearing from the owner, he was gracious and understanding about the situation with his employee. It's now between the employee(Batty) and myself to handle the situation. Update 7/30/21 My husband had an appointment for today at the downtown location from an artist he has used for 10 years + Monday night he received a call from an intermediary on behalf of Charles (owner) saying if I would take down these reviews he could get tattooed, and if not he was banned. So after 10+ years, thousands of dollars spent, and dozens of clients referred, he is banned for life because these reviews are true. He has loved every artist at this shop(aside from his experience with Batty), had amazing work done, and is extremely disappointed it has come to an end but does not want me to take down a review because the owner doesn't like it. If he wants them down he can deal with the money paid to his contracted employee. We have set Sept 1st as the day Baty needs to pay back the $1450 paid towards services not rendered. We shall see, and I WILL let you know. Update: DO NOT TRUST THIS BUSINESS WITH YOUR MONEY! "Batty" has stolen almost $1500 from my family. I have tried to contact her every way I know how to and she will not respond. Charles, the owner is fully aware of the theft and has done nothing. Unfortunately we will have to go the legal route to recover our money. Before going to the police I called the shop to try to resolve this with "Batty" like civilized people. She responded with, "Bitch, if you contact me again I'm going to fuck you up!" This was in the shop during business hours, and is worth noting I am physically disabled, which she is fully aware of. Not atrocious for a walk-in but not good by any stretch. I had communicated to Krtnz twice in the consult that I had fractured my T3 vertebrae earlier this year. When I sat down for the tattoo, I reminded him a third time that I literally broke my back this year. This was news to him. Having claimed several times that he'd been tattooing for nearly two decades, I made the mistake of assuming that this man had the experience, if not the common sense, to infer that tattooing over a literal broken spine wasn't going to be a walk in the park for either of us. He made comments periodically about how most people don't struggle so much with having their spine tattooed. (Most people don't have line work over a literal broken spine ) He was needlessly rough, his irritation showing. He quite sloppily rushed through it and it shows. Unfortunately I now need to choose between laser or having it blacked out. Over a fractured vertebrae. But hey, cheap tattoos aren't good and good tattoos aren't cheap. I'll take it as a painful life lesson. read more

As a heavily tattooed and pierced person who knows a lot of amazing tattoo artists globally, I can tell you that I still get anxious when having to communicate with a piercer or tattoo artist. I guess it stems from being treated with a 'rude, too cool for school attitude' that I witnessed several times when I was very young. Over the years I have come to find out that most piercers, staff, and tattoo artists I've come across (95%) are well grounded, nice individuals who are just trying to make a living just like the rest of us. NOT TRUE BLUE TATTOO. ADMITTEDLY, I can't comment on their tattoos or piercing, but their customer service at both locations are FAR BELOW SUBPAR. I went to the Red River location and a piercer and tattoo artist just stared at me while I was trying to open the door. Instead of opening the door or trying to provide any information they just looked at me as if I were crazy. When someone did open the door I explained that I wanted to look at the jewelry and buy a few pieces. The guy said , "do you have an appointment" me - no. " we have capacity and can't let anyone else in." I explained that I had paid for parking and didn't notice any info on having to make an appointment ahead of time and he said sorry and closed the door. I sat outside and 2 other guys walked up that seemed to know one of the tattoo artists. The door immediately opened up and they were let in. He didn't offer an appointment, tell me how long it would take or direct me to how to make an appointment just to look at jewelry. Just turned me away. I then call the shop on airport and explained what just happened and enquired if they had jewelry and the very young lady who answered the phone said, "sorry, what do you want me to do about it. We only do tattoos here." I explained that I just wanted to look at jewelry and will probably have to take my business elsewhere. She said, "OK, bye!" Hung up and that was it. I got my first tattoo from Mike at True Blue. It was a fantastic experience. I didn't have an appointment, so I just walked in and Mike helped me as soon as he arrived (I got there about 20 minutes before his shift started). I went in having an idea of what I wanted, and Mike quickly helped me create the design, happily tinkering with anything I asked him to change. The shop is very clean, and Mike made me feel very comfortable before, during, and after. When I was in pain, he talked me through it and always kept me updated with things like "okay, almost done, just breathe" and the like. His bedside manner is phenomenal, and he's a hilarious, interesting, and smart guy. It was an excellent couple of hours in his chair. Once the tattoo was finished, I was able to look at it and take pictures before he cleaned and covered it. The line work was incredibly precise and wonderfully crisp (which is saying something, because my tattoo has a fair amount of small, thin lines). It healed up beautifully as I followed the instructions Mike gave me, and rarely even caused much pain or itching. Now, three or four months later, the image is still very crisp and gorgeous. I went to True Blue with my best friend for us both to get a tattoo at the same time--my artist was Cody, hers was Curtnz. (Yes, Curtnz. He was amazing.) Because I'm a planner and this was my first tattoo, I wanted everything to be perfect. I emailed with Cody a couple times, sending him the image I was playing with; he was not very responsive email-wise but once we had our appointments on the books, I didn't stress too much over it. I'd checked out all the portfolios and knew once I got there and we discussed the image, we'd be good to go. Sure enough, it all went as easy as could be. My friend went over several sessions, because hers was a larger image and on her ribcage--a painful spot so she didn't want to deal with all that in one sitting. This being her last session, her tattoo only took a little bit and looked great. Cody did my drawing and it looked perfect, so we got started. He wasn't very chatty, but frankly who cares? I'd rather a beautiful tattoo from a quieter artist than a wobbly one from someone who gets distracted. Sure, it hurt, but about what I expected. The tattoo (pictured) is a key with a Sanskrit symbol with a butterfly resting on it, and came out just as I hoped it would. I have visited True Blue for piercings and tattoos in the past but never this location until last week. The shop is easy to find, has parking out front and a wonderful cozy atmosphere inside. I was greeted promptly by a really friendly woman tattooer who was managing somehow to tattoo clients, handle payment and greet new people coming in--very impressive! I was able to wait for a short time to have a consult with the artist I wanted (Rachel) and she could not have been more warm and friendly. She was very transparent with her availability and how long my desired tattoo would take and was also easy to schedule with. We discussed pricing and set up a time to start several weeks in advance due to his schedule. At first I was a little upset about how far out we scheduled, but what can you do? I came in for a total sitting time of about 16 hours. The piece is amazing and super realistic looking. There is nothing that I would change about my experience. I have gotten two tattoos from this location and I absolutely love them! I went in this past Friday around 1PM and one of the artists had an appointment cancellation so she was able to get me in right away. (Super lucky, I know!). So I can't really account for how busy they are because both times I went I was seen right away and my tattoos were fairly small so they were done quickly. But, my artist, I believe her name was Batty, did an awesome job on my strength tattoo. She captured everything I wanted in it and did an amazing job. I highly recommend checking them out if you would like small, quick tattoos! I can't really review for big pieces since I haven't gotten one but I would most definitely go back and request the same artist when I decide to get my thigh piece. To those who have left bad reviews, businesses have off days and people have off days. I suggest going back at a different time or finding another place if you weren't satisfied. Had a great experience at their Airport Blvd location. My friend and I were coming in to get two small tattoos each, but we didn't have an appointment. Batty was their walk-in artist and she was great. We only had one person in front of us, so we waited about 30/40 minutes before we were able to be seen. After that, it was all quick and easy. Batty was super nice and very cool. The interior of the shop is very clean and I love how the artists' spaces are covered in their own art work. It's really cool to see other examples of what they can do. I would totally go here and see Batty for my next tattoo. read more

My husband and I went in to get simple tattoos of our initials for our anniversary. We brought in our own design and knew exactly where we wanted it. The man who tattooed us (I can't remember his name but was a taller, "weathered" looking man with long hair and his station was in the back corner) told me I was an idiot for wanting my tattoo facing towards me. I thought he was joking so I laughed it off but then he persisted and even went so far as to ask my husband if I was crazy. Meanwhile, my husband is saying he wanted it the same way I wanted it and he wasn't giving my husband any flack, just kept criticizing me (not in a fun way but in a completely unprofessional and aggressive way). We would have left immediately but this was the 3rd tattoo parlor we went to that morning and it was the only one open (we both had to get back to work soon) so we (my husband and I) decided to grin and bear it. The tattoo came out well but it was a simple black line drawing that took less than 10 minutes each. Pretty hard to mess up. I think he must have realized that he was incredibly inappropriate because he gave us a discount without us asking for one. Here's the thing. It's my body and my money. I'm a grown ass woman and If I want a tattoo of a turd on my face and I'm of clear mind when I ask for it, then I expect it to be done and without criticism. Let me begin by saying I LOVE my new tattoo! The end result is fabulous, the how we got there, not as much. November 2016. My mother and I decided to get matching tattoos on our wrist. We narrow down style, I even went into the store a week before (since my mom is from outside Austin) to get a rough estimate on price and which artist to expect. I was told there was no need for an appointment, just walk in and one of the artist will work with you on the day. That's exactly what we did. Jim was the artist who did my mothers tattoo, Casey did mine. Jim came out and introduced himself to my mother, and began discussing her tattoo. After a few moments she waved me over to help make clear what we wanted. When we told Jim the color purple was what we wanted, he warned us that purple can be a tricky color to work with, explaining the fading and "muddying" of color that can happen. We explained why the color is important, not just to the tattoo, but two both of us.Twice more he strongly attempted to persuade us to NOT get purple. Each time we reiterated our points, adding that we both have purple tattoos on our bodies. Finally the "argument" ended when Casey yelled from "JUST LET THEM GET THE PURPLE" (first words I heard him say) from his work area. Jim then asked to see my current purple tattoo, when he did, he then made the comment that it was more of a faded lavender.(pst* its more than 6 years old) When my mother and Jim began placing the stencil, I continue just kinda wandering around. Waiting. Casey had still not spoke a word directly to me. He was setting up, I figured no biggie. Then I notice all the set up seems to be done and it appears like he is waiting. I turn to him and ask if I should sit, he says yes and motions to the "chair". The stencil gets set on my wrist, once we make sure its straight, Casey gets started on my tattoo. This is when I zone out, I mean my pain tolerance isn't high, so I just focus on my breathing, and not moving. So, not surprisingly I am startled when my mom comes next to me and shows me the final product that is her tattoo. Its great! Its exactly what we told Jim we wanted! Then I look down at my own wrist. That is not what we talked about. Instead of coloring the continuous "ribbon" purple Casey was paining the space inside the symbol purple. ( sorry if the explanation makes little sense, its easier to describe while pointing to the tattoo itself) My first thought was not a good one, immediately followed by.." Well, he has already tattooed 2 1/2 areas that weren't suppose to be, I guess there is no going back now!" But that was when I realized, Casey had not asked me a single question about this tattoo. Not about size, color, location, nothing. Jim, I assume, told him the general info. I shoulder have been more clear, and less assuming. However, I love the outcome, turns out, more than the way I came in thinking I wanted it. So I get creative integrity, I understand you are looking out for my wallet, not wanting me to have to get touch ups all the time. However, when the person who has to live with this ink in their skin, and is paying you to put that ink in their skin, has assured you they understand, and not only are willing to take the "risk" but have already done so, DONT continue to argue with them! I honestly wasn't going to review, but was urged to by a friend who I told the above to. Several people who have heard, ask where I went, so that they know where not to go, even though I start and end with I love the way my tattoo turned out. read more

I went to True Blue (almost a year ago and I'm JUST now getting to this, sorry) because I was happy with the work another artist had done at the downtown location, and then when I found out Marco was tattooing there, I got super excited. I took a really crappy rough sketch of what I wanted to him- I can't draw worth a damn. He took it and made it into something more beautiful than I could ever have imagined, and when it actually tattooed it on me, I couldn't have been happier. His line work is some of the best I have ever seen and some of the best I have on my body. The shading he did made it look EVEN better, and he's also a really cool person to hang out with while he's tattooing you. He doesn't charge a ridiculous amount for his amazing work, either :) I definitely recommend him. read more

I came here the other day for my first tattoo and they were amazing! The people are very welcoming and are easy to set up with. They do not take appointments over the phone, they take walk-ins meaning you do need to come in with some time in-case there is a wait! I had a girl named Batty do a simple saying in Arabic on my ribcage and she did it in 6 minutes which was incredible. She was very gentle and it didn't hurt too much. The place is very clean and smells like rubbing alcohol so it's well kept. Took my dad with me and they allowed him to film so they're very flexible and approachable. My friends and I chose not to move forward with getting tattoos at this location because of the way we were treated upon walking in. 2 stars because several other employees seemed very nice.
