True Bikram was like heaven for me during my trip to New Haven. I have a torn Achilles and had been very worried about practicing any where but my home studio but given my travel schedule I figured I would try True Bikram. This studio is simply ok. The introductory rate is good but it's too expensive for students with the student discount. The studio temperature can vary drastically and sometimes it's so hot it's unbearable. One time my toes were stinging! I wish they would make it affordable for students and keep the temperature consistent. They also only have 90 minute classes. In a college town they should offer 60 minute versions. This was one of the first places I practiced Bikram, so I was super excited when I wrote my initial review. After a few years of practice, and some travel to other studios on the east coast, I have to say this studio is just okay. The instructors are still the best, but the studio itself needs a serious update. They could benefit from updated carpeting and more shower stalls/ a bigger bathroom. I am a yoga beginner, much less HOT, Bikram style. But I love Bikram yoga of New Haven so far! The studio is conveniently downtown, I've never had trouble with parking my car. The people that attend classes are nice, and I really enjoy the routine- push myself to new heights and flexibility in this hot and humid scene. Did a drop in class while visiting New Haven. Studio was very clean and staff was very professional and welcoming. Shower, bathroom and lockers all made for a convenient class experience. Drop in price was a little above average, as I travel often for work and do drop in classes all over, but price included mat and towels. Would definitely come back again. read more

Went to my first Bikram yoga session here yesterday on a whim. 26 poses lasting an hour and a half in 105 degree heat with 60 percent humidity. Wow. It was intense, but it seems like it could be so rewarding. The instructor was awesome, especially since he gave me personal attention despite there being 25 people in the class. The staff overall was super easy to deal with and very supportive. There was none of the snobbery that I feared. It only cost $20 to try it for a week with monthly packages at $99. The studio was a bit tricky to find. It's in the basement of an office building. If you come after 7, you can park in the ProPark lot next door for free. Otherwise, you can park on Elm Street at the metered spots for free at that time as well. read more

I prefer the Madison location to New haven just because it is new and doesn't smell so much! The smell was quite a wake up call at 6am! The teachers I have had at both locations are very friendly and welcoming - not always the norm on the shoreline! The first month intro rate is unbeatable. $49 for the first month! Otherwise, it is similar to other yoga studios in the area - overpriced and difficult for a grad student to afford ;) Overall, this was my intro month and I thoroughly enjoyed the staff, but not the smell in New Haven. And the Madison location is beautiful! If looking to learn more about bikram I would definitely recommend trying it here! read more

Had 2 great classes here so far. I purchased their $49 beginners unlimited 30 day package. It comes with 2 towels and a yoga mat to borrow for each class. The instructors were skilled and as these were my first 2 classes back after no bikram for over 10 years. I feel my muscle memories responding quickly to the poses. I've been to bikram studios all over the US and they all smell like sweat! Can't blame them for that. It's a sweaty practice that works wonders on our joints, muscles, awareness levels and mental clarity. I encourage you to try the 30 day beginner package. I don't know whether it's this studio or Bikram- but this seems a bit dangerous. I've taken hundreds of classes in over a dozen studios and I've never before heard phrases like "It should hurt- because all of your weight is on you neck" or "double-jerk." Maybe it's just not for me, but if you're not an experienced yogi you can really hurt yourself here. read more

I have tried every Bikram studio from Ridgefield, Norwalk, Shelton and New Haven... This is by far the best one. Robin and her teachers are attentive and careful and welcoming to new students. I wasn't sure I would like yoga, but this type allows me to push until it hurts safely and to challenge myself both physically and emotionally! Bikram is a great workout and I always leave this studio feeling cleansed and energized. I have been going weekly for a couple months and have some feedback. On the positive side, it is a great workout. A nice touch is that the staff provides citrus - orange or grapefruit - slices after the class to munch on. On the negative side, this studio is carpeted and beginning to smell like an old gym - exactly what you would expect with 20+ people sweating all over it in 105+ degree temps, 3x daily. I find the instructors very average. No personality. They all recite the bikram book verbatim - no personal attention - just a canned, monotonous, spiel. You might as well play a recording and give us a discount! One instructor, Megan, needs to learn proper English. Half of the class is probably Yale students, so I know they hear the same gaffs I do. "Move your legs much more higher," "push your both hips forward," "put your head on your exactly knee." What does that even mean??? Extremely distracting in class when you hear things like this repeated... again, and again, and again. Overall, the great workout makes it worth it. Studio and instructors leave something (a lot?) to be desired. read more

I wouldn't call myself a "yoga person", but that doesn't matter when you come to this place! I was greeted warmly at my first class and felt totally comfortable to be totally uncomfortable trying to do yoga. It was a workout in the best possible way! I left feeling slightly worn out, but in a I-just-used-my-body-in-new-and-different-ways way...which is how you want to feel when you've exercised! As someone who has practiced in studios across the country for years, I would not recommend this one. That being said, I do prefer classes that are more mental/spiritual and this did not have that. There was a women in the class that had never been before and was having a hard time. She stopped for water and the instructor singled her out saying, "I'll wait. We drink water together." I found that to be rude and inconsiderate. In the end, I would not go back and would not recommend to a friend. There are better places to go. read more

If I were to sit here and write all the benefits I have received from Bikram Yoga of New Haven , I wouldn't get anything else done, and I would miss tomorrows class as well. For my entire life I have played sports at very competitive levels, and I am used to training hard. When my stress level got out of control, my anxiety was off the charts, and life was just too hard to deal with , a good friend suggested Bikram Yoga. I have to tell you, I protested at first because I never believed it would work. Yoga wasn't for me. I was an athlete, and Yoga wasn't a sport. That is what I believed! I walked in to Bikram of New Haven to a bunch of smiling happy faces. I had no idea what to do, but they told me to do the best that I could and that would be enough. That was against everything I've ever known. I was out of my element, but I had to live up to the challenge that my friend promised me would change my life without the need for medications. Based solely on my friends word, and all that I know about being an athlete, I pushed myself to my limit. I had the belief that if I worked harder at the challenge I would solve all the problems in my life. I hated it. I am the person that has to win at every game, or die trying. Winning makes you the best. The problem was, this is not a game you can NOT win. After killing myself to to win at this challenge, and failing miserably, I slowly learned to accept. I learned to allow the yoga to sink into me, and in turn allow me to accept the yoga, the healing, and the change. . That is when it all began to come together for me. My stress level, my blood pressure and my frustration, all began to dissipate. My happiness, my soul and my inner peace all began to open up. Now I don't have to solve every problem, worry over everything, stress to the point of illness. I just have to be, And that is a great feeling!!!! Now Bikram Yoga can do a lot of different things for different people. You can lose weight , heal old physical injuries, tone your body up and strengthen your core. But what it did for me, was something beyond amazing. Not only have I learned more about myself then I ever thought possible, I also made friends with people I never would have met if not for Bikram Yoga of New Haven. I am trying my best to separate my newly learned feelings about Bikram yoga and the actual studio. The studio is well run. Seemingly tidy & clean. I did the 65$ intro 30 day deal- which really is like no other deal I've seen in ct (well, except for the 30$ intro to bikram in farmington- but who goes to farmington, besides poltergeists & 50 cent?) I needed to experience bikram's method fully, but it goes against mostly every fiber of my being. No pain no gain, yoga in the olympics, yoga competitions, I just don't get it???! The instructors are all super super helpful and knowledgeable. The owner of the studio is involed, present and clearly living her dharma. If you are itching for heated yoga and are confined to ct's offerings, try this studio out. I will never understand why Bikram insists on carpeted studio's, bellowing out students names, and repeating the same tired script and catch phrases repeatedly though, and maybe that's ok. read more

Upon arrival the studio smells like garbage feet - so nasty. I've been doing bikram for almost 7 years and these instructors are very rude and aggressive. The room is lit up like a step class which is odd. Yoga is suppose to be somewhat relaxing and every great studio I have been to will dim the lights. The owner is extremely rude as well. The teachers are very nice, but I have to give the studio 2 stars because of the smell. A bikram studio should NEVER be carpeted. For the first 20 min the smell is almost unbearable. It smells like a wet dog . The owners should definitely think about spending the money to rip up the carpet and put down hardwood floors. That would make a world of difference. Also maybe put in a light dimmer. I feel yoga is much better in a dim soothing environment rather than the bright over head lighting they use. read more

This place dramatically changed my life period. I cheated on this studio and went to a couple of non-Bikram studios just to see if it really is as good as I thought it was and it really really is. This place is managed like a Fortune 500 company. Great customer service, great, passionate teachers, awesome schedule which is key for me as life gets in the way, shower curtains are always getting changed, place is clean, students are polite and friendly, and a good sense of humor abounds -- just look at the pics on Yelp! Cracked me up! The Bikram series works -- all my medical metrics (blood work, cholesterol, blood pressure, weight, etc.) improved markedly after a month and dramatically after six months. I've been doing this for 19 months and prior to Bikram never maintained any other exercise regime beyond six months. You only have to try your best to do what you can do the right way, which means anyone can do it. Moving past my mid- 40s and feel better physically and mentally than I did at 18 and that's no exaggeration. I am indebted to Bikram, this studio, and these teachers. I'd give it 10 stars if I could!!! Don't let the cost or time commitment keep you from making a 90 day commitment. Trust me, you won't experience an evolution, but a revolution. After 3 years of practicing at this studio, I am medication free, I bounce out of bed and my arthritis is not even a thought this winter. The staff at this studio are knowledgeable and helpful. They really care about being sure you practice in the right way. The time commitment for Bikram is worth every minute. This is a routine for people who care about the quality of their life as it affects every aspect of it. Heat, humidity, lighting, size of room, showers are all minor aspects, but you will find all you need right here in Hew Haven. this studio kept me sane during much law school. i came daily during my first year, and steadily throughout my second and third years. the instructors are among the best ive had (including bikram instructors in manhattan). the studio is efficiently run, though i had some misgivings about the practice room. it is in the basement, with no windows, so a bit depressing and poorly lit. the floor is carpeted and smelled funky from time to time. i also would have liked a more centrally located studio, as this one is on the far side of the yale campus. but these are purely external, superficial factors--not to deter a true yogini from the disciplined practice this place enables! read more

As a grad student I spend most of the day hunched in front of books and the computer, and I've always had minor back and posture problems. I had only been running and doing a bit of back strengthening at the gym before, but Bikram Yoga worked my entire body in this wholistic way. I've only gone 4 times, and this could be a freak thing, but I already feel much stronger in my back and more awake throughout my day. Though the sessions are long at 1.5 hours, they add at least that much extra to my productive work time, and on top of that, it makes your body feel great. Right after you leave, you feel like jelly, like your muscles are getting massaged just by moving. Am I exaggerating? Try it and see. The instructors, by the way, are EXCELLENT at this place. They make you feel right at home, and at the same time challenge you and correct your mistakes (without overcorrecting). read more
