This review is years overdue and I put it off largely because I am sure there are better outcomes possible under this doctor's care. I do take reviews posted on this site seriously and am never excited to share a negative experience, particularly one related to a medical issue. I should make clear that I do not suspect anyone would have a similar experience unless they have a major back injury. I do not think people past a certain point of injury should allow any chiropractor to touch them, and I wish someone had been upfront with me about that before I subjected myself to treatment at this practice. I came to Dr. Johnson because he advertised a VAX-D machine (spinal decompression, aka very expensive last ditch effort to people with serious back injury). I had some success with the same machine at a less convenient location and was hoping to find a closer doctor who could continue the treatment, while I tried to put off back surgery a bit longer. I had multiple bulging discs (one wrapped around my spinal cord), sciatica, bursitis and all the fun things that come along with a considerable back injury. I needed surgery but wanted to avoid it, as my employer was pressuring me in that direction. This dance with spinal decompression was a wasted effort in retrospect but any qualified doctor should have treated my fragile back with care all the same. The attitude at this practice seems to be that the doctor calls all shots, and you have to subscribe to whatever costly regimen he prescribes or go elsewhere. There wasn't any bending to my comfort level. I had been through PT elsewhere and was seeing non-chiropractic doctors, so I did understand the serious nature of my injury and precautions that needed to be taken. Dr. Johnson insisted - despite the fact that I wasn't able to walk unassisted - that I also pay for a regular course of intense onsite PT and allow him to do manual adjustments, in order to access the VAX-D machine. Of course all of these added 'treatments' were costly and time-consuming, particularly to someone unable to get to appointments unassisted. I think I saw Dr. Johnson 4 times total, and it was one of the most negative experiences I've ever had in a doctor's care. He was extremely unfeeling to any pain caused, made several very personal attacking statements because I *could not* handle all the PT he wanted me to do at that juncture, and his extremely painful adjustments did not do anything but decrease my mobility. When his adjustments caused me to reel in vocalized agony, he ridiculed me very harshly. It was bad enough that the family member who accompanied me (as I could not drive) burst into tears, watching the cruel interaction. I am sure other people have much better outcomes and experiences under his care, but my experience was beyond shitty. I left with a worsened condition to when I first entered, unneeded emotional abuse and a considerable bill. read more

I've had chronic lower back problems because of my tight hip/glut muscles for three years because of excessive sitting for my occupation and wearing heels. I saw 2 chiropractors, one sports chiropractor, a podiatrist and physical therapy. After almost $1,000 of my money down the drain I decided to try Dr. J because he specialized in neuromuscular problems which is what I figured I had. Immediately in my first visit he hit all the spots that I had problems with and additional areas which I didn't realize. Even though his banner is under "chiropractic care" he hardly did any manipulations. Most of it was intense, accupressure which hurt like hell but man did my condition final improve. He works on different areas to help release the tightness in the muscles that have been in a chronic state of "tension". His staff is phenomenal and professional. They have onsite massage therapy which I go to because my insurance covers it. Also he has "rehibilitation" where I worked out with a trainer to "recondition" my muscles to move in the correct way. Richelle is phenomenal and she picked apart my posture immediately. She also taught me new stretches for my hip that I've never encountered before. I can't say enough how great this practice is. I first went to Jeff when he was in Danville after I got rear-ended. He really helped my neck and shoulders. I continue to go to him off and on when my shoulders get really tight from all the work on the computer and just plain ole stress. I recently started doing yoga and it hurt to put my arms above my head. My muscles were all knotted up. It took about 5 visits to loosen them up and not feel pain. I recently had him work on my hips - I think as we get older, it is important to keep our muscles loose - highly recommend him! read more

Following a car accident I tried a couple different Chiropractors looking for relief with a sore neck and upper back in addition to some headaches. I was then referred to Dr. Johnson by a friend, so I scheduled an appointment. I met with the doctor and was impressed with his commitment to helping me feel better. After the initial visit I was optimistic we were on the right path. We agreed an approximate 6-8 week treatment of Physical therapy, Stretching, ball and roller work. I purchased a package for the treatment in addition to the ball and roller kit. During my next visit I began work in the stretching room learning how to use the ball, rollers etc. to get the maximum motion and relief from my injuries. After the stretching I would then meet with Dr Johnson for the remainder of the appointment. He would massage and stretch my neck, upper back and shoulder area allowing me more motion. Everything was going as planned. I completed 4 visits and began a 3 week travel schedule so I was not able to get back in. When I called to schedule my next appointment I was told that my package had been used up. I had purchased a 10 visit package and had only visited the practice 5 times (initial visit counted as 2). So, I should have 4 visits left. I was informed that each visit after the initial consultation was comprised of two separate treatments and each requiring a "credit". Therefore, I had used up all my credits. I was shocked, I have never heard of this nor been told this by the staff. I am thinking I paid for a visit, not knowing that under the Johnson Chiropractic name there are more than one practices. When I questioned this with the staff they said they always tell everyone this. I find this ironic when Dr Johnson suggested a 6-8 week treatment plan and only a 4-5 week package. Simply put it seemed like a "Bait & Switch" to me and really soured my opinion of the office staff and practice. I was very diligent in my rehab, made all my appointments and when I had to cancel or reschedule I always called and gave advanced notice. To be treated like this just confirms to me that it is largely about billing and not as much about making people feel better. I will not use this practice again and would not recommend them to any friends or colleagues. read more

Don't waste your time going anywhere else! If I could give Dr. Johnson more than 5-stars, I would. He is AMAZING! He is fast, efficient, effective, and competent. His work has healed me more than anything else I've tried. He doesn't just adjust you and send you out the door. He gets to the root of the problem and fixes it. Dr. Johnson is my miracle doctor. I have couple of issues and for a long time . He is so far one of the best to help with my back and neck pain . When doctors failed he did almost impossible. My left foot was swollen for last 5-7 years of my life , not being able to even wear regular shoes.... I was just always stuck and struggling with any elegant and nice shoes. I joined Trusalus a couple of months ago. Working out with Alin Erensteyn is definitely the best choice I have made. Trusalus is offering small sessions (I believe up to 8 people) which suits me well and it also allows the trainers to pay attention to each and every one of us, making sure we are working out correctly and not damaging our body. I have been to other chiropractors in the past and have had great experiences with getting tightness in my lower hips worked out in 1 or 2 visits. Dr. Johnson said in order to fixed I needed to see him 2x a week for 4 weeks. Along with seeing a physical therapist on his staff. The cost and the time commitment were high (he charges $80 a visit and another $80 for the PT) I explained that to him. He said okay we can do it in 2 weeks. He kept me waiting every appointment (up to 40 min 1 time) and only worked on me for 5-10 minutes max. I didn't get the results promised after the 2 weeks. Other chiropractors charge significantly less and gave me better results. read more

I began seeing Dr. Johnson for scar tissue issues from 7 abdominal surgeries (hysterectomy and others) and 24 years of pain. I had tried every alternative practitioner on the planet. I came to see Dr Johnson's practice at the referral of a friend from a trusted chiropractor at the country. At 28, work no pre existing injuries, I had suddenly found my upper back and neck locked up so badly from a combination of poor WFH ergonomics and bad luck, that I could not lift my head when I got out of bed in the morning. Thankfully during covid, they were able to combine my initial eval with an adjustment and massage session lasting just over an hour. to be honest, it was incredibly painful but I could feel the muscles releasing and was instructed to ice and return once more later that week. After the second session, I was feeling more mobile than I had even prior to WFH. I was told "you're young, active and we don't want to see you beyond the 10 sessions you've purchased unless it's for mobility classes". They were absolutely right- my neck and back mobility are vastly improved and I only wished I lived in east bay to take advantage of class; the commute from SF is simply too far. There are a few products sold through the office, but I was never, ever pushed any. It seems clear they only carried items they actually believed in, and aren't in the business of "subscription pain management" aka milking injured people for money. I sincerely enjoyed their philosophy and approach to wellness and health and would recommend the office to any *young* people who may be suffering from sports or WFH related injuries. read more

Dr. Johnson really is one of a kind! I've never been to any chiropractors before him, so i definitely got lucky with choosing the right one. I had hurt my rotator cuff during swimming and any time I swam more than two laps it'd start hurting again. Anyone suffering from asthma should see Dr. Johnson. I originally went to see him for hip and knee issues of which I am now pain free. My cough and shortness of breath caught his attention and he suggested he could offer me relief. I have had asthma for years and quickly agreed to his approach. The results were almost immediate. The good stuff: great, friendly staff. Dr. Johnson (I'll call him Dr. J here) has great accupressure technique and manipulations. The bad stuff and why only a 2-star review: Dr. J is what I'd call the 'whack 'em, crack 'em, stack 'em" type of doctor. My former chiropractor moved away, so I was referred to Dr. J by a friend. My former chiropractor could usually mend my issues within 2-3 visits, or tell she can only do so much. But Dr. J right off the bat insists I need to come 3x/week, and it seems every week he has some new idea to keep me coming back for more. I stupidly bought the 10-pack for a discount since he seemed pretty confident he could fix my problem after a month. During my 10th visit and me telling him there really wasn't much progress, I did tell him a certain stretch I did that temporarily alleviated the pain. His comment was "that's good to know... NEXT TIME we'll do such & such and see how that goes.". Why not THIS time?? Oh yeah, he wants me as a client for life apparently. I would maybe get 10, or 15 minutes TOPS of his time during each appointment, the other time his friendly staff set me up on a contraption for 10 minutes that didn't work either. Believe me, I did everything he recommended to with no relief; I'd assume if each time I'm telling him not much progress, he'd recommend something other than him (like my last chirporactor did). Again, I"m sure his techniques are great for a lot of muscle & tendon issues, but I didn't appreciate feeling like I only got a short amount of his time knowing other patients were waiting in other rooms for his work.
