Cheryl wrote back to me almost immediately and was beyond accommodating in making an appointment. She also said because my son was donating it (he is in remission with cancer), they would not charge. We arrived a few minutes early to consult with Brian. I am not exaggerating when I say that EVERY person we encountered asked us if we needed anything. We had a small entourage, as it was a big day for him. They were so understanding about us being paparazzi and taking a bazillion photos. I had the most disappointing experience at this salon and I didn't even get a haircut. I had sent Tru a message several days ago asking if they gave discounts for people wishing to donate their hair, which I was. After they said they did I was ecstatic and ask them to book me an appointment. I was told to come in at 7pm on Thursday (today). I went there tonight with my mom and was greeted by an almost empty salon. The receptionist asked if I was there for a 7pm appt, which I was. She then informed me it was booked for the wrong time and I was scheduled for 4pm. I showed her the email with my scheduled appt time and reason for my appointment listed twice in the email. She said there was nothing she could do, did I want to come back another time? I came to this salon with hopes of donating 9 inches of hair to people who had lost their own. Instead of asking if they could accommodate me, they turned me away without so much as an apology. Needless to say, I will NOT be back nor would I recommend them to anyone read more

The staff at TRU do an excellent job. I actually drive from Hampton Bays to Saint James to get my hair done here. The staff are really laid back but do an excellent job. I see Danielle for my color. She does a fantastic job getting me to the exact blonde shade that I adore. Plus she's fun to talk to and makes the time fly by. The coloring area is fun because the clients sit at one big table and can talk to each other while getting their services done or tune out to watch TV or read a magazine. Angelica does my hair cuts and she rocks it every time. The decor is modern, clean, and trendy. Just love it! The salon also gives you a small incentive for pre booking and keeping the same appointments. They also have their own product line, which I haven't tried yet. I was recently recommended to Tru Salon by my wonderful friend. She always looks terrific! After quite a while in between haircuts I booked an appointment with Brian. I could not have asked for a more professional, sweet, down to earth, expert in his field, if I tried. Brian took the time to access my hair thoroughly discuss his thoughts and mine before just jumping in and cutting. He took his time, explained what he was doing along the way, and gave me his complete attention. The end result was nothing short of perfection and I am thrilled with my new style. His product line was quite impressive as well and the shampoo smells delicious leaving my hair well hydrated. After the cut I figured a new color was in order as well and booked the following day with Carli. How lucky can a girl get - two home-runs in as many days! She knew exactly what would look great and the final result is outstanding. I feel like a new person. I am thrilled with my new color. Just left after my first visit, and had to review this place. The rating I gave is for the stylist who did my hair. Her name is Gloria, and she totally rocked my cut! Went there today after doing online research to find a stylist I felt could achieve the look I wanted. I have short thick hair. I like to let my hair do it's own thing. I don't force it at all. Gloria was able to style it, thin it and finish it to a look that is funky, sassy and makes me feel great! The salon is spotless clean and comfortable without being pretentious. The accompanying staff is friendly and welcoming. Prices are as expected for the level of styling I require. Defiantly going back again and again. So friggen happy that I found them!! read more

I had a bad experience at this salon. I was running late so I called them in advance and let them know. I told them I was 20 minutes away, but the lady insisted my appointment be moved up 15 minutes only. I told her I probably would not make it in time, so she replied "ok, let's see how it goes, let's see if you can make it or not". Once I arrived due to traffic I was still 15 mins late for the rescheduled appointment. So I offered to reschedule for another day 2-3 times once I arrived, but each time the stylist assured me it was no problem saying that she had time for my requested haircut (short angled, layered look was the request). I would have been happy to reschedule, but I trusted her judgement -- she said she had time, so I thought she had time. The cut itself ended up just being a minimal trim, because apparently (I found out later) the stylist felt rushed but did not voice this to me. The haircut had no visible styling or anything new that I had requested. Since the stylist was already with another customer when I saw the results, I thought it would be rude to ask for a whole new haircut, so I just accepted it. My hair looked pretty much the same when I left as when I arrived. I found out later that the problem was that the stylist tried to be nice saying she had the time when really she did not have time. I thought she had the time! I trusted her judgement because she said she had time. But she did not speak up even though I offered to reschedule many times. When I left a review on demandforce, they replied blaming me for being late... yes, I was late! But I did as much as was physically possible to make up for it -- called in advance, talked to them about it, offered to reschedule, asked multiple times "Are you sure you have time?" to which she replied over and over it was no problem. What more could I do? There was nothing more I could do! I guess this episode was a lesson on both sides: the stylist should speak up if they don't have enough time for the cut requested, and the customer should just cancel an appointment if they are late at all -- otherwise the customer risks being blamed for any bad outcome. read more

It has been awhile since I had my hair cut and styled because the last time I was at a salon they cut my hair so so short. Chris listened to exactly what I wanted and I had pictures of the style I wanted to achieve . I walked out of there with a super fantastic cut and style which hasn't happened in a long time. I wish I could give this place zero stars. My family has come to Tru Salon for multiple haircuts and have had ZERO consistency with the first cut being okay to the next being totally unacceptable. The cuts are uneven and when asking for 3-4 inches trimmed, the hairdressers cut 8-10 inches. I went in for a haircut last summer and not only did she cut double of what she was supposed to, it was essentially a blunt cut when I asked for layers. My younger sister went in and received an extremely uneven haircut. Recently, my other sister went in for a haircut and asked for a 4 inch trim and when she came home about 8 inches had been cut off and she was extremely upset. The salon claimed that her original haircut was uneven but the icing on that cake is that her last haircut was at Tru Salon. I would never ever recommend this place to anyone as they give bad haircuts, do not listen to you, and do not own up to their mistakes. read more

Best haircut ever. New loyal follower. Not your typical Long Island salon. Let me start off by saying that I have been a loyal customer of Bumble and Bumble in NYC since 1997. I have been running at lunch time for years or after work to get my haircut and then trekking home to Long Island. I have recently been disappointed with the service and started researching salons close to home. I discovered Tru online and read the bio of the owner Brian and was convinced I should give it a try. I made an appointment for color and cut and am now a loyal client!!!! I have gotten so many compliments on my hair. The staff are friendly and not pretentious. I was looking for a new place to get my hair cut, closer to where I live. It is always hard to find a new stylist, especially when you have been happy with your current stylist for years and you don't know exactly who to trust your hair to. I was having flash backs to bad Supercuts hair misshaps from childhood and almost considered just not getting my hair cut anymore! After seeing so many good reviews for Tru Salon on yelp and some good photos on Facebook, I decided to give it a try. They were very nice on the phone when I called to make an appointment. They were able to fit me in the next day, which was a nice bonus as sometimes it can be hard to get an appointment when needed. I arrived for my appointment and was greeted by a nice receptionist who told me I could have a seat and my stylist would be right with me. They booked me with Chris, who is AWESOME. He greeted me and gave me a breif consultation to determine the condition of my hair, what I wanted to do with my hair and what level of maintenance I am comfortable with. I am in the process of growing out a very stylized 1920's inverted bob with bangs, so my hair is in a bit of an awkward phase where it isn't quite long, but it has overgrown its previous style. Chris assured me that he could trim my ends preserving as much length as possible while giving it a bit of a better shape, so I had more options and better body with my hair. My hair was washed, and then Chris worked his magic. I am never super talkative in the chair, but he was incredibly nice and is almost uncomfortably handsome, which is an added bonus, lol. The finished result of my haircut was EXACTLY what I was looking for. My hair looks great, and it has been easy to style on my own since. Chris spoke with me about maintenance and when I should come back to further work on getting my hair in shape. I HIGHLY recommend him and booked my follow up appointment before leaving. The salon itself is great, everyone there was nice and very professional. I was made very comfortable, offered something to drink, they even had snacks. Their own brand salon products smelled nice, and they gave me a very generous sample of their conditioner to take home and try. My haircut was $15 cheaper than with my previous stylist and I can honestly say that I felt just as comfortable with Chris. Everyone getting their hair done left looking great, they obviously care about their customers. I will definitely be back, and recommend anyone give Tru (and Chris) a try. read more

Three words: Helpful, patient, understanding. I have a hard time with trust and not being in control especially when it comes to my style and hair which was pretty evident from the minute I walked in, I'm sure. For my consultation I must have been there for at least two hours or more because what I want and what my hair can tolerate are two completely different things so it took a while getting to a middle ground on what to do with it. They even did a test strip to see what it can handle. I booked an appointment for the following week. On my appointment I was kind of upset because I had to cut my hair and for me who's had hair down to my butt since I was a kid, this is a very difficult thing to even think about let alone actually do. There was some confusion here and there with style, color, etc but I am happy to say even though I'm still trying to get use to the new "length", the overall result exceeded my expectations. They clearly have a passion for and take pride in what they do and I think that is awesome. The only problem I had and I hate to even mention it because I really love this place is the prices. They're around the same rates as any other high rated salon but instead of one person doing cut, color and style it's two or three people depending what you have done. I took my 19 year old son for a hair cut and style consult. I had some hesitation about spending $50.00 with only positive reviews online to go on. Would my son get the information and haircut he needed? We normally spend $15 to $20 for his haircut. My son has a regular short haircut like Daniel Craig. Nothing complicated, but he needed direction on how to best manage his style. We walk in and we're greeted by the nicest receptionist. She checked us in and offered us refreshment as she guided us to relax while we waited. The receptionist was very attentive for our short wait. Brian came out and greeted us and invited us to his works station. He had an awesome presence and I had a sense it was important to him that my son got what he needed. He was extremely knowledgeable and took the time to listen and understand to what my son wanted from the appointment. The haircut and consult were perfect. It is nice to have someone that really likes what he does. Brian is not like any other stylist/hairdresser I have ever met. He is more like an Artist who gets excited to get to work on someone's look. Even the recommendation for some gels that would help my son with his style came from a place of excitement about the product he was recommending not from a place of let me sell you some stuff. I highly recommend this guy. I am even considering getting a haircut with him for my next haircut. read more

I went in with chin length over processed, weak, damaged hair. What a wonderful salon, got a haircut yesterday and it was probably one of the best of my life. Let's start with the salon itself, it's a beautiful space Lobby is big and very clean w beautiful displays of all their products. Now about my haircut. My hair stylist was Christopher, and he is the man. Went in for my first haircut and sat with him for an hour to discuss exactly what I wanted. He is very knowledgeable and was able to offer great advice. And when he got to cutting my hair, he used scissors. That's how a haircut should be not all with a buzzer, like most barber shops. and you could definitely see that Chris is a perfectionist, cutting each one of my hairs to perfection. I have never been more happy w my haircut. Felt like a star when i walked out. I would highly recommend Tru Salon to anybody looking for an amazing haircut. Especially Chris for men's hair. And the last thing I have to add is about their products. The shampoo and conditioner smells amazing and leaves your hair soft and smooth. And the volumizing mist creates your entire hairstyle. I was really happy with how Casey cut my hair. She was extremely thorough, there wasn't any chatty fake bs with her, and she cut my hair exactly the way I wanted it cut. I will definitely be going back to Tru but there were a couple of negatives to my experience. My first appointment was scheduled with Chris on a Wednesday at 8:15 pm (and I was thrilled they were able to fit me in the same day!) but when I got there I was told he was 30-45 minutes behind and that I could stay or reschedule. I got the feeling they wanted me to reschedule. The extremely friendly receptionist was great about the whole thing - apologetic, offered me a discount, and another appointment the same week - but I still wish they would have called so I didn't have to make the 1/2 hour drive. After my haircut on Saturday she told me they would knock the price down from 45 to 40. I was a bit confused about this...I thought there was a discount for your first time there as well as a discount for them rescheduling my appointment, but honestly, I didn't question it because Casey did a great job and I had already decided I'd be coming back. They gave me a little welcome gift of a travel size shampoo and conditioner...except when I got home there was only the shampoo in the bag. So to sum it all up, great atmosphere, the staff knows what they're doing,friendly receptionist...but don't expect them to be super organized or keep to their word. Give them a try though because I think they do a better job than a lot of salons in the area. My best friend goes here too and she loves her experience every time.
