I have been a patient at this dental practice for 45 years! Dr. Troy Lauritzen has been my dentist for many of those years. He understands all the dental issues I have had over the years (I'm about to turn 70) He answers every single question and is upfront with me about costs (I'm retired and no longer have dental insurance) Dr. Lauritzen reviews all options and lets me be the decision maker. Lastly, he puts me at ease and makes me laugh! I moved some distance away but will always continue to drive to this office for my dental care. read more

Expensive for virtually no work, which consisted of 2 minutes with me confirming what the hygienist found and writing a referral slip to a specialist. (The other dentist is good if you can get an appointment and the hygienists know their stuff.) Bills, given at the end of visits and which I usually pay by check when I leave, have occasionally been wrong. I brought this home to mail and am thankful. It was more than $100 too high. Dr Lauritzen has completed extremely complicated dental procedures for several members of my family including myself and I HIGHLY recommend him. I first heard about him because I was referred to him by another dentist in Pleasant Hill who felt I needed a dentist who specialized in more complicated situations (my teeth had practically splintered apart from decades of heavy teeth grinding due to a crossbite after poor orthodontia as a kid). After I was very happy with my results, I referred my 24 year old step daughter to him who was born with almost NO adult teeth and has such poor bone density in her jaw that implants are not an option (without years of bone grafting first.) Multiple other dentists said it would be at least $90,000 and several years to give the poor girl teeth, and all of them were just too worried and uncertain to help her because her genetic defect of almost zero adult teeth is so rare. Dr Lauritzen proposed three different solutions for her, and she chose a hybrid bridge-model that gave her beautiful teeth for only about $20,000 (a huge amount of money, but MUCH less than $90,000 -- and he completed her work with confidence!) After a lifetime of keeping her mouth closed in front of others in embarrassment, Natalie now smiles HUGE in photos!!! Following that, he literally saved my 80 year old mother's life because her teeth were so deteriorated with broken off crowns, molars worn to the gum line, and multiple infections and he was able to complete a very complicated multi-month ordeal to extract all of her broken off teeth and give her new ones. On top of his professional skill, Dr Lauritzen is very funny, very personable, and fun to visit -- which is not something you can usually say about a dentist. I am not sure how there can be any one-star reviews for him, but all I can say is these people must not have wasted the money and years of time at other dentists that my family has before finding his incredible competency. If you have any kind of a challenging dental situation you will not possibly find anyone better to take care of you than Dr Lauritzen. read more

Dr. Troy is top notch! He's as good as everyone says he is! He's been my dentist for almost 10 years and I have recommended him to many friends. His work holds up year after year! A filling done almost 10 years ago is still there. He takes the time to explain every option and details of procedure. Just a few days ago on Thursday, 12/23, I had a severe toothache and it just wouldn't go away. I called his office and the they had just closed that day at noon for the holiday weekend. They put me on hold and called him to tell him that his patient had an emergency. A few mins later, he called me to see how I was doing. He sent an rx to the pharm and I'll seeing him this week. He's great like that. It's 2 days before Christmas and he's helping me on the phone and taking time to explain everything --not rushing me through it! Everyone at this practice is terrific - from Nicole on the phone & front desk to all the dental hygenists (most of them have cleaned my teeth). Billing questions? The billing gal is excellent too! I've seen Dr. Swimmer there too and he's also great! One of the best things about the appointment system is that they maintain a cancellation list and call back list so if someone cancels, they will call you to see if you can take that spot. Works great if you had to cancel your cleaning appt and don't want to wait too long to get the cleaning! read more

My son and I have been coming to see Dr. Lauritzen since 2009, I believe...and we were both there for our regular cleaning yesterday. My son use to hate going to the dentist's office back when we saw our old dentist in Old Oakland on Broadway. But since we switched over to Dr. Lauritzen's, he never once complained. I like knowing that they are gentle with my son and he doesn't fear going into the dentist office. Dr. Lauritzen and his staff are all very nice. We haven't encountered any problems yet so we'll continue to come back here, as long as we continue to live in the area. read more

This review is about business practices. After almost 20 years of loyalty, on our last appointment I advised this dentist's receptionist that our insurance changed when we went from employer PPO/DeltaDental to Kaiser/DeltaCare USA. She advised that Delta and DeltaCare are not the same and we were no longer covered because Swimmer/Lauritzen's practice isn't part of the new provider's HMO network. I agreed to go through with the teeth cleaning cuz we were already there and how much can teeth cleaning cost? Then we got the bill. On top of the teeth cleaning, my wife was charged for a bunch of x-rays and an oral exam although she never saw the dentist. According to my wife, the hygienist insisted that she get the x-rays because their last on record came from 2011 and their "standard of care" required x-rays once every year or something. My wife doesn't normally get x-rays (obviously) but acquiesced. After seeing their invoice I called their office to see what relief we might get considering these circumstances. They insisted that, insured or not, their "standard of care" required the x-rays. They agreed to eliminate the charge for the oral exam that never happened. They advised that we might qualify for a 10% discount on the total outstanding charges IF we were seniors AND we paid cash. No other relief possible. They insist on collecting over $600 for these two 40-minute teeth cleaning sessions. read more

Dr. Lauritzen is awesome, he's focused on preventative care and keeping your teeth pretty for life. When I was 18 I killed one of my front teeth and needed an emergency root canal. It was a drastically different color than the rest of my teeth (purple) but I really didn't want to have to get it capped. Dr. L internally bleached it and it looks perfect. I've been going to this dental practice since I was three years old (and my mom has been going since she was three, too). Dr. Lauritzen came to the practice as Dr. Swimmer (Sr.) was retiring, which I think is nearly ten years ago now. I have since moved to SF for school, but I think it's worth the hour drive to Lafayette for the high quality of care you receive here. read more

Dr. Troy was recommended to me by a friend after I had terrible work done at the other dentist I was seeing (see my other review about him). My dentist had filled a cavity VERY poorly and I was so unhappy with his work and SO nervous to go to dentists because of this. Dr. Troy makes you feel very comfortable and treats you like an old friend from the second you meet him. He was SO gentle with my mouth that was in pain and was able to refill the cavity that had been hurting for months. His filling was so fast, painless and clean compared to the other dentist I've been to. My pain in the tooth has gone away for the most part (as long as I keep flossing). I'm SO happy with him and all the people at his office. The front desk people and dental assistants that have cleaned my teeth are so friendly and actually make going to the dentist not so bad! He is not in my insurance network but I go to him and pay out of pocket because it is so worth the trustworthy good work he does. I will be always going to him from now on!!! read more

My entire family have been patients here, and I have only good things to say about the office, the treatment I received and Troy himself, who is a fantastic dentist, very professional, and a funny guy, as well. Came here again recently after an unpleasant experience using a Groupon for dental services - an ill advised decision that ended up costing me more money than it was worth. After going to Troy for a few years, I was disappointed with the way his office handled my most recent billing situation. The office avoided explaining the specifics of the situation, and Dr. Troy became quite arrogant when talking with me. He and his office did not own up to the fact that they missed a crack in my tooth a year ago, and now are charging me for their error. Not to mention, the hygienist actually displaced the filling during my appointment, and I was charged for that replacement too. When I asked him to explain the charges, he simply said the dentistry is expensive. My entire family will be leaving his office. Clearly, he and his office are over rated and just in it for the money. read more

I am a big fraidy cat when it comes to dentists, really big. I'd be too embarrassed to say how long it had been since I'd been for a cleaning and check up, but I brought my kids to him and they all left feeling great. He was very, very kind to them. I got brave and made an appointment. I told the receptionist that I was scared and that it had been since the first Bush was in charge since I'd been to a dentist. She said that they'd take good care of me, and she was right. They really did. I've since recommended him to other fraidy cats who've all had positive experiences too. read more

We were referred to Dr. Lauritzen when our pediatric dentist retired and my youngest was a young teen. Overall VERY NICE personnel, office, etc. However, on the second trip Dr. L chipped the front tooth of my daughter while doing a cleaning. It was small, and he ground it off ~ doesn't look perfect, but not worth capping since the tooth is cavity free. But here's the big one: a couple of years later she developed an achy jaw. This went on and off for 3 years, with night guards recommended. A second opinion recommended against that, so we never did. Finally, while off at college, the true source was revealed: she had a previous filling actually touching a nerve, and it finally killed the nerve. Wouldn't a simple X-ray over a course of 3 years reveal it as a possible source of the problem? Yep, you'd think so! Root canal done, and voila pain completely gone. ...And yes, we did switch dentists! This is tough to write because ALL the personnel there are so nice; I think Dr. L just needs a few more year's experience under his belt. read more
