Greetings fellow smoothie lovers, There's a running joke within my circle that no one hates their lives more than a tropical smoothie employee. Now that may seem harsh, but every time I go there the employees seem to be angry the second I walk through the door! However, I'm all for giving the benefit of the doubt so I hoped for better as I walked over to get a smoothie tonight. As I walked in I was met with a tsunami of bad vibes coming from the employee behind the counter and I knew the stereotype was going to hold true once again. At this point I'm not even upset at the employees for always being in a bad mood, I believe that it must be the company at fault because this stereotype holds true at establishments nationwide (I know from experience) or so I thought. When I got home and took my smoothie bowl out of the bag it was to my dismay that the bowl was placed upside down in the bag. This could only have been intentional and the fault for that cannot fall to the company but only the employee. To conclude, I think that both management and the employees are at fault and that tropical smoothie cafe is a factory for hate and negativity, so if you're into that go enjoy a smoothie there! read more

On my visit to Ann Arbor, I happened to stop by here. This place was nice and clean, and bright and spacious. The drinks are healthy choices, and the wraps and quesadillas are delicious. It's a simple stop to get a healthy bite or drink. read more

I live right around the corner and it's so tempting to just grab a smoothie from here everyday. I order on the app and just walk straight to the counter. The rewards program is pretty decent. They usually send you $1 coupons to try certain smoothies and when you spend $55 you get a $5 coupon. My favorites are the island green and health nut. They add turbinado (natural brown sugar) but you can tell them to add half or none to make it healthier. I don't think it's that expensive considering they use real fruit instead of a mix/syrup. I enjoy Tropical Smoothie because there are different varieties of healthy to protein boost. Overall this is a good business and worth your buck even though it is a bit expensive. I am always down for the greens. To be honest these smoothies can be replacement of my meals. However these are my treat yourself buys. This Tropical Smoothie is probably the best I've been too! I have gotten so much good advice from Jordan B that I am now a consistent customer. He told me about a happy hour deal that I didn't even know existed. Now, I've been in at least 10 times during this happy hour. He also just recently told me today about the deals that are on the app, Guess who just downloaded the app about 2 minutes ago? Not only that he told me about the survey for $1.99 smoothie. The smoothies are always delicious, I've never had a mistake. Plus, and here is where I THANK THE OWNER, I ordered a Santa Fe quesadilla and They asked me if I wanted to get an alternative veggie chicken inside instead of the animal chicken, and I was so shocked that I just went right into thanking. I usually go around lunch or dinner time and on average see two employees working. This means that service can get really slow sometimes (not the employees' fault!) when there are phone orders and people piling in for lunch or dinner rush. For example, I've seen some customers wait for 15-20 minutes just for their smoothies before! Although service can be slow sometimes, I do love the food here though! I always get a Chipotle Chicken Flatbread (with no bacon) and a King Caesar Chicken Wrap (which comes with a side of fruit or chips). The Chipotle Chicken Flatbread is packed with flavor, consisting of grilled chicken, bacon, romaine, tomatoes, and pepper jack and chipotle mayo. It is much less salty without the bacon, which I prefer, and it pairs well with the King Caesar Chicken Wrap! The King Caesar Chicken Wrap consists of chicken, parmesan, tomatoes, romaine and caesar dressing, all wrapped in a delicious garlic herb tortilla. I always feel satisfied and comfortably full after eating these two, and I enjoy eating in the restaurant because of how clean and quiet it usually is. Tropical Smoothie Cafe offers daily Hooked deals, especially around lunch and dinner time, so I try to capitalize on those. Sometimes the Hooked deals they offer are general discounts, while other times they are only for smoothies which I don't usually get. While the food and smoothies here are more expensive than other nearby restaurant options, and the service can be slow, I'm giving Tropical Smoothie Cafe a 4 star rating mainly because of its food (at least the flatbread and wrap I mentioned above) along with its Hooked deals for the food (which I appreciate a lot!). I'm usually never in a rush, so I don't mind the potential wait, and I absolutely love having a low-sodium yet tasty meal option for when I eat out! read more

I'm a bit fan of tropical smoothie, this one always just seems to take forever. When I order just a smoothie, sometimes I can be waiting for about 7 minutes which doesn't seem logical. Other locations I can get my smoothie in less than 2 minutes and be on my way. I like this location because they have frequent deals with the Hooked App where you can get a certain percentage off or even sometimes buy one get one free. Definitely helps cut down the cost when they average about $5 a piece. This location does have a variety of food options, which is convenient. Definitely not 'meals' by any means, but enough for a quick breakfast or snack. They've really expanded the food options over time which is good to see. My other biggest complaint about this location is the lack of the open feel. Seems very outdated and you can't see them make any of the food. It's done in the back rather than in front of the customer. With a place that serves fresh food, it's always nice to see it being made and what goes into it, but that's unfortunately not a feature here! read more

Management here is wildly unreasonable and refused to refund me after failing to deliver my food. I ordered almost $40 worth of food through GrubHub, and when I didn't answer my phone (despite diligently tracking the order through the GH website which apparently doesn't update very well), she just left with my food without bothering to get out of her car to knock on my door. That was annoying, but partly my fault. However, her refusal to issue me a refund is completely unacceptable. Maybe my credit card company can help reverse this once it's been processed? I was never the biggest fan of Tropical Cafe since the smoothies were always 75% ice and 25% flavor/smoothie. It was super disappointing. However, once Tropical Cafe switched management, the smoothies have gotten better. It was a little less icy, but still pretty icy. With the new management, the prices for smoothies are a bit more pricier. Such a bummer for mediocre smoothies. Their super basic smoothies are usually the best because they're the least icy, however, they're always too sweet or too sour. The taste is so weird due to the fruit combo. I used to think that it was such a steal - such a large drink for only $3.29. But but it's about $4 for a basic smoothie. I've gotten the basic smoothies twice and never liked it. When I do order smoothies there, I normally get the Super Food smoothies. They changed the price from $4.99 to $5.49. Sure, if the smoothies were good, I wouldn't mind but have you tried some of them?! NEVER EVER GET THE DETOX ISLAND GREEN. All it is is ice and ginger. But the ginger is "watered down". The Island Detox itself is just purely ice. Honestly, Jamba Juice is WAY better. Honestly, I only come when they have Hooked Deals. I enjoy trying to flavors hoping that I can find one where it's not icy and the flavor is delicious. However. I have yet to find one so the search might stop esp with the increase in price. Also, it takes awhile for them to make the smoothies. At other smoothie places, I'm in and out in 5 minutes, however I have to wait extra because there are only 2 smoothie makers and 1 person in the front. I honestly think they need more people making smoothies. Not sure when I'll be back. I'm really hoping that they realize how plain and icy their smoothies are. :( read more

As another Yelper had mentioned (shout out to @George L.), Tropical Smoothie Cafe is a mainstay on the discount app, Hooked. Their offers range from a couple dollars off food to buy one smoothie get one 50% off, which is what I used today! I ordered a Detox Island Green Smoothie. It comes with spinach, kale, mango, pineapple, banana and fresh ginger. It definitely sounded like a detox juice that people who go on those crazy juice cleanses would drink, so I was worried that it would taste too kale-y. I was feeling really full from a late lunch, so I decided to give it a try. I'm glad to say that I was very impressed! The whole drink tasted very fresh and light, and the best part was no added sugar! If I didn't need all the calories and protein that I need as a growing man, I'd be fine with drinking this all the time. Just a note on the sugar thing. Though most drinks do come with sugar, you can actually request they leave out the sugar for any smoothies! Asking them to do that for you easily cuts out at least 25% of the sugar, fat and calories. Their smoothies tend to be on the sweet side anyway, so asking them to leave out the extra sugar might be worth a try. Service was quick, as they trimmed down a line of 5 or 6 in about 5 minutes! The cashier also gladly accepted my Hooked deal and request to leave out the sugar. All in all, it was a very smooth(ie) and enjoyable experience! At full price, the smoothies will probably be around $5-$7, and there is only one, 24 oz size option, which is actually quite a big portion. I probably wouldn't feel comfortable paying that much for a smoothie, but with the buy one get one 50% off deal, a $5-$6 smoothie becomes only $3 or $4. The smoothies are great for a healthy, sweet treat or as a lite meal for days you feel bloated! As long as they keep offering those deals, I'll be keeping an eye out for more opportunities to try more flavors! read more

[Ambience] Very clean and modern interior. This place had a lot of seating available, including the bar chair area, despite of the size of the area. [Food] As you can see from above, I ordered the Açaí Berry Boost. In fact, this is the only smoothie I order here. I added soy protein and asked to put no sweeteners. I think their smoothie is tasty and I liked how the protein powder was not overpowering to drink. The original smoothie was a little too sweet for my liking, so I recommend you to go for half the sweetener. I have not tried their meal options, such as wraps and bowls, but I definitely would like to try it in the future. [Price & Service] With added Soy protein (extra $1), it was total $7.50. Honestly, it is possible that you can buy an entire meal with this price. I wouldn't say that this place is affordable but they offer quite nice happy hour deal (3.99 for any smoothies) for 6 hours/a day so I am not too hung up about it. The service was overall nice. The employees both work at the cash register to take orders and in the kitchen to make the smoothies. So, you might have to wait a little to order because they might be all in the kitchen making food. I stopped in here with a friend to grab a smoothie and while we were waiting for her smoothie to be made, we witnessed a former customer try to ask one of the employees if their smoothie came into contact with any strawberries. The employee answered that there were no smoothies in their drink. However the customer asked her to confirm if she was sure and she responded by saying "I don't know, I didn't make it." (Probably not the best idea to confirm something if you don't actually know, especially if it's allergy related). As someone who suffers from life threatening allergies I asked the customer if they were allergic and they confirmed that they were. The employee had already walked away again at this point even though it was very clear that the customer was worried about his allergies. I suggested he wait for the manager to ask (as the manager was the one who prepared the drink) and after he did so, the manager asked him if "his drink was red". When the customer responded no, the manager confirmed that there were no strawberries in it. This cafe needs to go through a food safety and allergy training as cross contamination could really hurt someone and they were very clear that they didn't care about confirming if strawberries had come into contact with the ingredients in his smoothie. So that was very disheartening. We also witnessed a customer stop in to let the manager know that a chair outside was broken and it could hurt someone. The manager seemed annoyed with the information and said that "if anything happened to someone on the chair, it would be Tropical Smoothie paying the damages, not him". Our jaws all dropped. I guess we were expecting a different response like "thanks for informing us of that! We'll remove the chair immediately so no one gets hurt." On top of that, we waited 15 minutes for 1 smoothie to be blended. I don't even know how that's possible. The smoothie itself was incredibly sugary and my friend drank a few sips and had to toss it. Horrible experience here. It's seriously a joke. Please train your team about food safety!! read more

If an establishment cares enough to offer fake non-GMO chicken in their (limited selection of) foods, why do they put sugar or splenda in their smoothies? So many choice supplements but I can't get a smoothie sweetened with honey or agave? Why would anyone want splenda in their smoothie anyway? If they let their bananas sit sit sit they'd need no additional sweeteners. Then of course in walks in the person who doesn't want bananas... That aside, you should ask if you want your smoothie w/o sugar or it's chemical nemesis. I did, the green one. Unfortunately, it was pretty undrinkable because after each sip loomed a cloying fake splenda-y aftertaste. We love coming to this place because the kids love the smoothies here. Food and smoothies are great, but the 1 star rating is for the poor service. Just terrible! They came to us at least 3 times to ask us what we ordered yet 4 orders after us, all received their smoothies before us. They claimed that they could not see our order on the screen. And they claimed orders come out in the order received. We waited over 30 minutes for 5 smoothies and 3 sandwiches. And then she pratically put her nose in my smoothie to see what it was. No thanks. As the granddaughter of WWII and commie-occupation survivors, I have been taught to degrade myself with unbearable amounts of shame if I do not lick a plate clean or slurp out the last molecule of a beverage. To waste food is a Polish cardinal sin almost worse than having a threesome with a German and a Russian. Why this graphic intro? Well, after my comrade and I each ordered a smoothie, and after I took a single sip of each, I promptly threw mine in the garbage can. I would rather spend one hour with my insulting grandmother than eat a full cup of this insult to "smoothieness." Texture, flavor, and ingredients were all terribly off and this is coming from a girl who will choke down a smoothie made with a bunch of gritty spirulina or hemp protein powder. I am still searching for the one place I can get a real smoothie out here - one just made with juice, fruit, maybe some veggies, and maybe some powders that aren't 90% sugar and artificial-something-something. read more

I got their seasonal Very Berry Cranberry smoothie, which consists of cranberries and strawberries. It tasted refreshingly sweet and bright when I first got it. However, I didn't finish it immediately and after a few hours, even in the fridge at home, the smoothie's thickness completely disappeared and it transformed into a simple artificial-tasting juice, with no smoothie consistency whatsoever. So, it made me suspect that some of Tropical Smoothie Cafe's smoothies are originally just juice that is frozen into an ice slurry form, instead of real blended fruits. One pro is that their cups are thicker styrofoam, which I guess is bad for the environment but easy on the hands in cold weather, and I suppose preserves the coldness of the smoothie in hot weather. Another minus is that all their smoothies are the large 24 oz size--I don't know why they don't offer different sizes? If they had smaller sizes I probably would've finished my smoothie in one sitting and never noticed it melt into pure sugar juice. read more

I was recently in one of your tropical smoothie locations. Standing at the register to completing my order. I felt someone breathing down my back. So I turned around to give the customer a look. Hopefully that the person would understand-That I was not done ordering. And that I felt that they were invading my personal space. The customer said what are you looking at, you don't scare me. I mentioned some words to the customer. Then staff, immediately started to take the persons side. Yelling at me, telling me how dare you talk to my customers that way. Who the hell do you think you are. This is coming from the employees. At that point I asked-could I speak to your manager. Rolling her eyes, at me.She went to get the manager. They spoke in the back for a minute. When the manager came out I mentioned to her. How I was treated. By her employees. I knew that she couldn't do anything about the customer. But the employees continued yelling at me saying that I was a liar. And front of all the customers. I proceeded too sit down, and wait for my smoothie. They completed two orders,of customers that came after me.Then once my smoothie was done, The original; employee that took my order. Came out and Shoved the smoothie in my face. While sucking her teeth loudly and rolling her eyes. She was Visually bothered. The other cashier, continue rolling her eyes while Ringing up their customers.And I recorded it on my phone. That store also has cameras to back up this whole ridiculous situations.I understand, that sometimes customers are not right. But in this situation. I've been to Tropical Smoothie so many times, and think your experience here depends on who is working. I had one girl give me my smoothie, but completely forget about my flatbread until I mentioned it to her after seeing four other people who came after me get their orders. Then I've had one delightful guy take my order and let me in on their secret menu of retired drinks, but sadly I don't think he's there anymore. But overall, I love smoothies and the ones at TSC are pretty solid. Depending on who makes it, occasionally you get one that has too much ice or is too watered down, but usually they are pretty thick and delicious. For roughly $5, I think it is well worth it for a large smoothie that is practically a meal. Do be aware that their smoothies are pretty high in sugar content (you can look up the nutrition facts online), but you can ask for no added sugar. I do this on days I want to be more healthy, but you can definitely taste the difference. read more

We ordered a Detox Island Green smoothie, Island Chicken quesadilla, and Chipotle Chicken flatbread to eat there. Since I'm severely lactose intolerant, I specifically asked for no cheese on my flatbread. Our order came, and it was wrapped for to-go in layers and layers of plastic. After I took a bite of my flatbread, I realized that it had cheese in it. I went up to the counter to ask for my correct order, mentioning my food allergy, and was rudely interrupted by the man at the counter, who flippantly said he needed a minute. After he was ready, he raised his eyebrows at me, expecting me to repeat what I had already stated. I asked for my correct order of the flatbread with no cheese. Without even an apology or another word, he went to the back room and gave the order to the cooks. I took the wrong order back to give to my friend and the employee emerged from the back kitchen and POINTED at me, and said "No, you HAVE to throw that out or I will charge you for it." At that point I was pretty shocked because I'd never experienced that but I complied. During our time there, I also noticed other customers who looked extremely dissatisfied with the service. A number of customers waited to order at the counter for several minutes and were not helped. One man even left, shaking his head. We expressed our thoughts to (who we thought was) the manager and was also the friendly woman who greeted us when we entered. She said that throwing out wrong orders is NOT their protocol. She apologized for how the situation was handled, especially with regards to my allergy, and offered us a free smoothie. Bottom line, if you want their food, order it on UberEats. The tradeoff for the delivery fee is worth not dealing with the people there. read more
