Urban Market Oshawa isn't quite a grocery store, and it's not quite a fine food store either,…read morealthough they do carry a lot of fantastic brands and niche products. I'd describe it as a dream come true for foodies like me who like small, local brands, and it's run by people who really care about supporting local. I know of a lot of small, local brands, whether restaurants or specialty food products, and I know there are a lot more out there that I don't know of. Sometimes, I want to try them out but it's really hard to do so when some of them don't sell in local stores or they only sell in one or two stores. Others basically only sell online and I then either have to hit the minimum spend for free shipping or I have to pay for shipping. Enter Urban Market Oshawa. They've got a whole lot of these small brands all housed under one roof. The first time I went, I felt like a kid in a candy store. So many brands I'd been meaning to try, and I could easily just purchase the one or two products I wanted from each one without having to hit a minimum spend or go to wherever each individual brand was being sold. I did a fairly extensive restock on some of my favorites, including Mitchell's Soup Co, The Patty Shoppe patties, Truff, Sapsucker, etc,, and tried some tasty new treats from King David's Frozen Pizza, Drizzle Honey, Honeybar snack bars (We've gone through a ridiculous number of these since we bought our first two boxes), Appleflats crabapple cocktail mixers, etc. I've gone back several times since my first visit, and each time I return, they've got new options in stock, so it's a lot of fun. Pro tip 1: Grab a bagel from the newly opened up Bagel World location inside the market. The bagels are fresh and they're fantastic. So are their butter tarts. Pro tip 2: Saturdays are sample days! From time to time, this means the BIGGEST samples of Gertie's Peanut Butter Pies, and honey samples, and at one point, they had the most incredible small batch marshmallows. Pro tip 3: Take pictures. There are lots of places to take fun pictures. Right now, other than their holiday setup, they've got a Barbie box upstairs, and THEY HAVE A LEGIT BANK VAULT you can take photos in. Have fun! Pro tip 4: They have events from time to time, and those can range from super sampling events to pop-up special vendor events to free events for kids. It's a great community place. Pro tip 5: Stock up on Mitchell's Soup Co. soup tubes. The only two brick and mortar stores I know that sell them are Urban Market Oshawa and Farmboy, and Urban Market Oshawa's collection is bigger. =)

I've visited The Local by Massary twice now. It's an extension of the Egyptian restaurant Massary…read morein the same plaza and doubles as a café and specialty grocery store. They sell fresh and frozen meats, groceries, candles, perfumes, and more. The café itself is laptop friendly with outlets available, and there's also a prayer room. My only complaint is that the seating is a bit too tight. There are a lot of tables and chairs packed into the space, which makes it difficult to move around comfortably. The drinks have been the highlight for me. The Iced Spanish Latte was my favorite (9/10), followed by the Iced Biscoff Latte (8/10). I also tried the peach sparkling lemonade. It was refreshing, but it tasted more like a fruit punch than a lemonade because the lemonade flavor didn't come through as much (7/10). For pastries, I tried the Dubai cookie and the Dubai croissant. Unfortunately, neither was a favorite. The cookie had more of a cake batter flavor, and the croissant just didn't quite come together for me. I'd give both a 5/10. Overall, I'd come back for the drinks.

The butcher is so clean and the meat quality is evident. It is the ONLY butcher I trust to get any of my meats and chicken. I have tried their steaks, chicken and lamb and loved every single one. The quality is evident in the taste when you try it, but the best part has to be the cleanliness of the meats. I never see a single drop of blood in my meats and I find it so clean and nice. You get what you paid for and the customer service is excellent. We accidentally arrived 5-10 minutes after closing the other day and the team was still willing to accommodate and give us our order, which was so kind from their end. No surprise there as anything by Masrawy is the best, whether it's the food at the restaurant, the Local Cafe and market or the butcher shop. I'm so glad this butcher shop has opened and you'll definitely see me here as a regular customer. They don't compromise on quality!

But there's a backroom that has the stuff that's about 40% off or more. Just keep in mind it's either somewhat odd flavours that didn't sell; or, it's quite close to expiry. But the chocolate I bought that was only a week off of expiry didn't taste or look any different.

But they're so good and so cheap. Basically the store has everything for cheaper than retail and bulk barn style pick and choose/fill a box type deals. It's like 150 for $45. The staff is generally nice, they've always got samples. Which makes it so much worse to restrict yourself from buying more, as you unwrap and eat those tasty lindor balls. The selection is crazy too, they've often got seasonal and discontinued flavours, as well as the new ones before they actually come out in stores. Which is pretty exciting for some who clearly has a mild addiction to these chocolates. Btw the Swirl/Golden one is the best. All in all, its a great outlet with deals going on everyday and consistently addictive chocolate. Oh and don't forget those free samples!

The pastry case at Highland Farms is out of control awesome. There are cases upon cases upon cases of delectable sweet delights. I've picked up so many different items from here - gourmet cupcakes, macrons, cakes, etc and all have been fresh and delish. I believe they do bake some treats in store but some come from other vendors such as Dufflet and La Rocca. Highland Farms also offers lots of interesting foodstuffs from the around the world I've personally never seen before but love to try. I had a lot of fun zipping around the store right before the holidays finding items for my in-laws and their family to enjoy. Random tip: if you've never tried Herdez salsa, grab yourself a jar or two if you stop in. This is hands down my favourite jarred salsa of all time and can be super hard to find for some reason. Try it, you'll be sure to love it. See you again soon, Highland Farms!

CHEAT or DIET?:…read more CHEAAATTTT Ok I'd like to foreword that I'm only reviewing the pistachio cake from Highland Farms. Now let me tell you about this cake. Is it moist? Yes. Is sweet? Absurdly yes. Is it worth it? If it fits in your macros, then yes. This cake is delicious and cheap. I ain't gunna lie. It's like if Wonderful Pistachios married a twinkie. This cake was $28 + tax. Definitely great for parties and not for eating yourself . it's definitely on the sweeter side, so I wouldn't share with your Asian moms. They're going to complain it's too sweet. But overall pretty good if you're bulking or don't care about calories. Shoutout to the cake people. Their service is great and nice, and they even decorate the cake box with ribbons. The cashiers leave much to be desired, but I guess this isn't Costco lol. Ambiance feels like a European grocery store at the size of a warehouse store. Oooooh-Emmmmm-Geeeeee!!! Sooooooo happy is me!…read more On my way home from work this morning I stopped by the market and now I'm absolutely on a sensory high!!! Some of the stands aren't actually from farms (from what I hear) but just people that buy large quantities of produce and go to market to sell it. I didn't buy anything from those guys. I DID, however, buy from a bunch of different families/farmers. It was so wicked cool! I was really overwhelmed by the size of the setup and the number of stands. I most appreciated the guys that offered samples of their fruits and veggies. In fact, I wound up just saying "yes" to buying everything they fed me as I took each euphoric bite. I'm not gonna lie... not all of the vendors are very friendly. I actually felt that the majority were not so. That was a bit of a letdown. But I spent enough time passing through the lanes and chatting with a handful of people that I still had a warm and welcoming experience. The market is open Friday and Sunday from about 7 or 8 am until about 4 or whenever they pack up and will run to October. I know where I will be doing my shopping for the next couple of months!
