The beer was very good and they offer tasters for their beers so we were able to try a few; they were all very tasty and we really enjoyed them. Good place to get some quality beers. It kind of is hidden a ways but worth looking for so keep your eyes out. Triptych is a brewery located in Savoy. It's a ways from the UI chaos. Pretty nice for those just wanting to enjoy beer instead of chugging it like frat boys do Natty Ice, so go here. A bit out of the way from campus. It's not a bad thing for real. This is where to go to get local stuff. It wasn't busy. We got a few, including the Thiol Trip Tech. It's about $5 a pint. This one was a hazy IPA, bold but not overly hoppy though. Has no food. There's chips and pretzels for $1 or so. For sure would choose this over a frat bar. It has these beers available in bars but go here to get exclusives. They have lots here to try. read more

I'm not a fan of IPAs, but tried their Acid Meme IPA and actually liked it, so a visit to the brewery was in order. We made the trek down to Champaign to drop our son off at U of I this past weekend, so we popped in to Triptych for some sampling. It's a typical taproom type venue, relaxed atmosphere and lots of room.  We sat at the bar and ordered right away.  I believe you can bring in your own food, play games, read a book, or whatever, for as long as you wish.  I ordered a flight (four 4-oz samples), and an extra 4-oz sample.  For 5 samples, our bill was about $8.75.  Not bad at all.  I tried a hefeweizen, a wheat, a maple syrup/coffee stout, a peach sour and the candy cane milkshake IPA.  They were all so smooth and delicious - I was expecting to not like at least 1 of them, but nope, but they all met my approval. Our server was laid back and I didn't feel pressured to order quickly or pay out.  No one made me feel like a weirdo because of my choices (like other places!).  I recommend dropping in sometime.  They surely know what they are doing if they can get me to actually approve of 2 different IPAs! read more

I never realized this place existed until my last trip to U of I. It is actually relatively close to campus despite the Savoy address (you still need a car)! Anyway, this is a real tasking room right on the side of their production plant. This is truly a microbrewery and I like that! It's nice to see a local brewery that all they do is allow tasting and hanging out. The facilities are surprisingly large and clean. The beer menu is quite large and varied. I actually didn't like their beer that much, but perhaps I chose poorly. It wasn't that the beer was horrible, but none of them wowed me! Still, I think they provide a great product and experience. I have been to more expensive and fancier breweries who had horrific beer. Their beer was ok, but the whole experience made up for that! I highly recommend checking this chill place out! read more

I grew up down the street from this place. I later moved to San Diego, CA (the home of delicious beer), and I recently came back to check out the local brewery scene in Champaign. I never would have expected to find such a wonderful brewery in Savoy! I tried several beers, all well brewered and true to their styles. The Dank Meme is a very nice hazy IPA, and the Christmas stout is a perfect chocolate stout. I feel so lucky to have access to the beers Triptych produces. For such a small venue, they produce brews out of this world. I've always loved their IPAs (the hop school varieties rock) but am becoming more and more impressed by their sours and stouts. Today I was able to try some of their beers left over from Festivus --- AJ's Stout (comparable IMO to Dark Lord or BCBS), Wine Barrel Aged TL;DR, and Virgil is Old (a strong ale). So good! This is definitely our favorite brewery in town. Amazing beers, awesome people (staff and customers), and a great atmosphere. Almost every Thursday they do a Randall, (instead of explaining what that is, just come try one!) and we hardly ever miss a week. We have been bringing our 20 month old daughter with us to Triptych since she was probably 4 weeks old. Funny thing is, she usually isn't the only "baby" there (you have a baby...in a bar). I think my daughter likes Kristy more than us and Rich is always really sweet to her. We've even caught Virgil interacting with her and I think he liked it . They've recently done a ton of remodeling that you totally need to go check out. They even have a second location across the street with weekend hours! Best brewery and beer in the CU area. It is your brewery. Period. It is a statement of fact. Not even an exclamation point? This is more professional. It's not like they discovered a cure for cancer. Triptych serves a variety of beer styles while still delivering in quality and taste. To top it off they are always looking for ways to innovate and step up their game (these are the ingredients for success). They always keep their menu updated on their website so you know what beers are available when you want to visit. You can order tasters, flights, full pours, crowler, growlers and cans (to go). They also often have food trucks outside or you can just bring food in. On Thursdays, they do a Randall (infused beer) and you can enjoy the company and dulcet tones of the sassy man with a beard behind the bar. Piece of advice: do not poke the bear. Feed him honey instead and you will be rewarded. Sometimes ordering at the bar is a bit tricky during peak business hours. However, the Memery is now open on Friday and Saturday nights for drafts and can purchases. They also just brought in new bar games to the main tasting room and brought in additional seating (including tables for two so you can enjoy a nerdy beer date with your significant other). Hopefully this new flow of space will help things out. Last but not least, TAKE THEIR TOUR. Even if you're a regular, drop what you're doing and go online and buy a tour ticket for the mere price of only 7 DOLLARS--which is a steal. The tour includes a glass, beer samples (which may include new and/or tank samples), behind the scenes beer and brewery knowledge, and a beer to enjoy in the Memery at the end of the tour. You won't be disappointed unless you don't have a sense of humor, in which case I think you have entered the wrong building. Their stouts are easily competitive with STL and Chicago breweries, especially their barrel aged imperial stout. They are also a deft hand at lagers of all styles. Their marzen lager for this past fest season was crazy good and their citra-hopped helles made me feel things. They do a great job with the taproom as well. Great beer at great prices! This small-batch microbrewery usually has something to suit most palates. When you walk in, the bar is pretty much straight ahead. That's where you place your order. To the right is the seating area where you can enjoy your beer with food you bring, friends, in-house board games that are stowed on low shelves. To the left is the brewing area where the magic happens. The menu is on screens at the bar. Of the selection, you can order a taster (4 oz, $1.25+), a serving (12 oz, $4-8), or fill a growler (32 oz & 64 oz, $6-16). I usually get a flight & leave with at least one growler. I tend towards the dark, smooth, & bitter. There is usually some kind of Stout involving coffee or chocolate that I get obsessed with. (Remember XOXO, Valentine, Because Coffee?) If you don't share my preferences, there is usually some lighter brew, like a golden lager that still embodies complexity in flavour. The Dirty Hippy, a brown ale, is a popular standby. Enter: Triptych Brewing Sure, I could stay at work and drink Triptych beer there- but that just seems silly. There isn't a Wendy's remotely close to my bar, so why stay? We always stop along the way at the new Wendy's on South Neil. They're doing the lord's work in there, folks. I've almost wanted to stop in the drive-thru on the way home to say "thank you". Anywho, let's talk about Triptych. The beer is tasty. Some of them are hazy and hoppy, some aren't hazy or hoppy. I've seen them make hoppy beer that isn't hazy, too. In late December, there's a barrel aged stout that is out of this world. They fill crowlers, growlers, and a variety of in-house glassware for a pretty great price. The service is always great- even when the place gets busy. I always feel welcome. It's like Cheers, but with 100% less Ted Danson and 100% more Wendy's. My compliments to Mr. Triptych!
