A view towards our wooded site. A (harmless) snake sleeping in the sun (fall camping). Our water electric site.

Stayed for a fall weekend. Loved it. Want to return in summer to enjoy the pools! They have some very nice wooded sites. Wifi not great, better up by office but overall a nice campground.

Some of the sites for larger RV's looked too close for my tastes, but there were plenty of people there.

NYS doesn't have a centralized booking system for campsites like NJ does which makes the, booking, experience so much easier especially for noobs like me. I visited the group camping site at this state park for a large meetup family group camping trip. I passed several solo camp sites down the road leading up to the group camp site and all the sites seemed to be situated nicely along the road side. Working facilities are near the individual camp sites but for the group sites you get the good 'ol fashion out house which I wasn't a fan of but managed to drop it like it's hot as needed right down into the abyss of a hole for the toilet. No showers or working facilities near the group site but you can drive over to one for a hot shower. The best part of this state park is the absolutely awesome astronomy club that has an observatory you can visit and use the super expensive telescopes to see other planets with the guide of an astronomer. The staff at the astronomy club are all eager and delighted to answer questions to all who are curious. Peering through a telescope to see the rings of Saturn is absolutely awesome! If interested the observatory is located within a stones throw from the main park entrance at 333 State Park Road, Great Meadows, NJ 07838. The observatory is free to visit but they do have donation bins there to help support their projects and facility. While this state park doesn't have as many camp sites as other locations I've visited, the astronomy club makes this place an epic visit!

At 3,494 acres it is the largest park in the Morris county Park System. The park has 24.5 miles of multi-use trails including a blazed bike trail. Horseback riding, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, fishing, bow hunting, tent and RV camping are available. There are hiking trails for all levels. Headley Overlook at 1,280 feet provides a view of Lake Hopatcong. Saffin Pond provides fishing opportunities although no swimming or boating is allowed. Bird watchers often come to observe migratory birds. Beaver inhabit this pond and can often be seen. The park is free with the exception of RV and tent camping which require a permit. For $20 you will get water and electricity (30-50 amp) hookup for your RV. Spots are wide and well separated. The park has clean restrooms and a bear proof garbage system.

The campgrounds have 4 lean-to's, each with a picnic table and fire ring. Wood is for sale, on the honor system, you drop off your cash in an envelope by where the RV's are (wish they had a box closer!). There is a water source right in this area, and two porta johns. They also have numerous tent platforms, it's an easy straightforward spot. It's almost right next to Weldon Road which runs through the reservation, so you do hear some cars. On the plus side this means you don't have to lug your gear far. I stuck to the Yellow, Blue, and Teal Highland trails. There are some nice overlooks, Headley overlook is perfect for a night hike since it's right by the camp site. I saw some fishers at Saffin Pond. Black bears are all over the Jersey wilderness and they have brochures available right next to the trail map pamphlets explaining how to keep your camp site safe from them, also what to do if you run into one. I didn't see any during my visit but I did see a deer, a beaver dam, a garter snake, a bat that wanted to chill in my lean-to overnight, and a bunch of cute orange newts. Fiddleheads, skunk cabbage, and spring onions were some of the common plant life. Early in the season, over the course of a weekend, I saw maybe five other people- two mountain bikers, two fishermen, and a guy with his dogs on the trail. I had a great time, and if you're new to camping or hiking, or easing yourself back into either having taking a break, this is a great, quiet place to visit. I wouldn't say it's something to come out of your way for.

Nothing like camping overnight in rustic county parks with outdoor recreation. Nice to know that…read moreMahwah offers such a place -- an easy drive from most anywhere in Northern NJ. If you have youngsters and want to get their camping feet wet just a little bit -- this is a great place for a first experience. Ok -- so Glen Gray 'aint Yellowstone or some equally impressive National Park -- but what it lacks in "gee whiz" visual appeal is more than made up for by its convenience, cleanliness, affordability and variety of hiking and camping experience. GGC is -- first and foremost -- a boy scout oriented facility -- so it is set up like one -- with a trading post -- full time "Camp Master" -- and circular camp sites with wooden tent floors -- organized for a larger pack or troop. Each site has a fire pit, dining area (including one with a roof in the event of inclement weather) and a basic -- gender neutral latrine for washing your mess kit and such. No showers -- but hey -- who needs showers when you can go off the grid with a lake and canoes -- right? And this 'aint tailgating folks -- so you need to park your car at the lot near the entrance -- and be prepared to hump your gear to a campsite which -- depending on where you choose to stay -- could be a couple of miles away. But fear not. For a nominal fee -- the Camp Master or one of his minions will drive you and your coolers to and from the site -- no worries. ;) I enjoyed the weekend I spent here with Junior and his scouting mates. We humped in and back with our packs -- fished (one of our group landed a large mouth bass -- but its a catch and release lake - bummer) feasted on MRE's, sardines, franks & beans and s'mores -- and had a blast fending off the bear and raccoons that dropped in to pay a visit. GGC also offers cabins and lean-to's -- so you can regulate exactly how much nature you want in your camping experience -- including what sort of weather you want to endure -- since they are open all year 'round. Top Tip: Glen Gray only allows overnight camping by prior reservation and access comes with a variety of restrictions -- including no pets, bicycles, booze and so forth. (see: http://glengray.org/faqs.html ).

The bathrooms and showers are clean and the store sells ice and firewood (no outside firewood allowed). Each tent site has water and electricity, a fire pit (with built in BBQ grill), and a picnic table. There's a play field with 2 Cornhole sets (bags can be borrowed from the store) and a pond for swimming (but no dogs allowed). There's good hiking and access to a river nearby about a short 10 minute drive away. Prices are higher than other spots in the area - tent sites are $55/night for 2 adults plus $17 per adult per night with max of 4 adults per site. If you arrive before 3pm, they'll charge you $6 per person for an early check in (unless it's a busy weekend when you'll have to pay for an extra night at $55). I arrived at 1pm and hoped they'd just waive the fee given that it was a super slow weekend and there were a ton of tent sites available (including mine), but unfortunately the manager insisted that I either pay the additional fees or wait around for 2 hours. The staff were very nice and sweet and were willing to compromise given the absurdity of the rules based on just a 2 hour early arrival, but then unfortunately their manager (elderly guy - based on other reviews I'm gonna guess it was Mr. Taylor) came out and was rude and condescending about the whole thing which was disappointing, particularly since I've been to this campground several times over the years and usually have a really good experience. Other than Gramps McRuderson (aka Mr. Taylor), I had a decent time with my friends here and would consider going back (so long as we don't cross paths with Mr. GrumpyFace on one of his "bad" days lol).
