    Tent site

Just got back from our second stay at Camp Taylor; the last was in September 2021 and we loved it just as much this trip as the last! We camp at the rustic tent sites, and there is plenty of room for 2 cars and 2 tents. Depending on how you want your setup, there are sites that are more secluded and some that are closer so you can maybe plan a group outing and stay at adjoining sites. The staff are all lovely and take the time to explain the rules both in-person at check-in and on the forms they provide. They are not hiding how seriously they take rules like quiet hours, and it will keep campers like me coming back. If you are respectful of the folks around you and especially during the posted quiet hours, you will have no problems. The office and shop keep supply of snacks, gifts, and firewood that burns well. There are flush toilets mapped in spots of the tent sites, and showers available at the same complex as the office. We already can't wait to come back!

I've been coming to Camp Taylor Campgrounds for over 20 years and it's never EVER disappointed me. The Taylors keep the campgrounds spotless and are the kindest family-run camp site I've ever been to. Today I bring my children to Camp Taylor and I have know to expect safety and peace of mind when I let them run throughout! They love spotting the friendly deers and playing in the stream throughout the day. Plus it's a plus that they get to visit the wolf preserve to watch them get fed. Nothing is more pleasant than hearing the wolves howling at night while sitting next to your campfire. Bears are prevalent throughout NJ, but they are more scared of you than you think. The secret is to keep ALL of your food and trash inside your car when you sleep in the tent overnight. It's NEVER been a problem. BTW, if you see one...do what Clayton tells you to do. Say "go away bear!". Guess what? They always go away. Here are other pluses: - No rowdy drunk campers on site...ever. - Clean bathroom and shower facilities. - Forgot something? The general store has it! - Kids LOVE mining for gems on site! - A short drive gets you to the Delaware River for some awesome canoeing. - Rainy day? The game room is ready to entertain the young ones. - A playground is available on site to get the kids some exercise. - The owners are just GOOD CARING PEOPLE. - Need to "glamp"? They have gorgeous luxury cabins and tents! Like I said, I've been coming since the late 90's and today, after camping throughout the tri-state area, I STILL can't find a better campsite to bring my family. This is and will always be our year-long tradition!

We just got home from Camp Taylor and I wanted to write because we had such a wonderful time!! From the moment we arrived until we checked out everyone was so friendly and helpful. The entire campground was very well maintained including the lake. My son loved getting to swim and I enjoyed relaxing in the clean sand. We stayed in one of the rustic cabins which was a first for us (we usually tent camp) and we really enjoyed it. They were so cute and again very clean. The fan kept us nice and cool even in July and we loved the little lights on the outside. They added a nice ambiance while we ate and had our campfire. After the lake we took a little hike up the mountain and got to see some of the wolves at the Lakota Wolf preserve which was a nice little bonus. The bathrooms at the campground were the cleanest I have ever seen in my 30+ years of camping! I had read some not so great reviews prior to going but I'm so glad I did not let them sway me away from going because we would have missed out on a great weekend of camping. Everyone we ran into that was staying there also seemed to be very happy. I appreciated all the things they had to keep kids busy from the corn hole to the playground and even the little game room. My 5 year old loved it! We ran out of time to get to do the mini golf so we will have to check it out next time. They take pride in their campground and it shows. I would definitely love to go back some time.

Love Camp Taylor. Can hear the wolves from the CG up the mountain at the Preserve. Nice gift store at office. Owners will not put up with overly loud campers - that's good. Family camping, NOT a crazy "resort". No pool but swimming in the pond beach area. Favorite is fall camping. Sites are fairly large, decent space between. Nice playground area & some mini golf. Only downside - loud campers in more crowded times - but that seems to be everywhere these days! So keep your voices down, people - you are in nature! BEWARE - the walk up to the Wolf Preserve is a work out if you are not used to it. (If paying for the tour, there are small buses.) As with ALL campgrounds these days, no outside firewood may be brought in due to bugs destroying our forests!

We have camped here several times and enjoy it emessly. NJ is fairly devoid of good campgrounds but Camp Taylor stands out as heads above the high density style campgrounds you see elsewhere. The staff were very friendly and the condition of our site and facilities were fine and very spacious. The wolf preserve is a nice bonus and is worth the walk if to just catch a glimpse of these beautiful animals.

They have it all here for families. You can choose to be close to "civilization" with tent sites spitting distance apart, or go to a remote site where you will feel far from everyone. Regardless of which you choose, all sites are well treed and clean. If you are a tent camper, be prepared to have to really pound in your stakes as sites are rocky with thin soil. Clean bathrooms with flush toilets, sinks with running water and hand soap were a nice surprise and are conveniently scattered around the campground. There is a pond for swimming - though not as appealing as the stream my grand daughters enjoyed playing in. You can hike up to the Wolf preserve which is on-site or take a formal tour. The camp store is well stocked and has a freezer with ice cream treats. The firewood that must be purchased is hardwood and dry so it lasts longer than it looks. This camp ground is not a resort and if you are looking for a place to go to party, this camp ground is not for you. But if you are looking for a true camping experience, you can't get better than this. The only disconnect I found is that given there are so many bears around, I would suggest putting bear-proof trash receptcles next to each of the rest rooms and eliminate the individual plastic cans at each site. We saw a bear lumbering away from my tent area in broad daylight and noticed every plastic can had been knocked over while we were away. I did not see a central trash dumpster where I could have put my trash before bed - I felt bad leaving my bag of trash in the can provided at the site.

Had a 4 day reservation with Camp Taylor this past weekend. We had 3 sites with a total of 14 ppl between all three sites. Kids and adults. And even though it rained 80% of the time we had a BLAST! It was very nice being close to a bathroom but away from the main cabins. Close to the lake and within walking distance to the showers and "store". The supermarket was only a few miles down the street for the little things that we needed extra of and was easy to get to. The staff at camp Taylor was super friendly and I can't say enough about Josephine! Cutest and most wonderful little girl and daddy's favorite helper at the gift shop. We will be spreading the good word about this hidden Gem! Will definitely be back in 2022!!

My husband and I stayed here for a weekend as first time RV renters. We have since become owners. We have 3 young children and did not bring them on this trip as we wanted to make ourselves comfortable with the RV without the children. This place was great!!! Campsites are all maintained and spacious and private. They weren't as level as they could've been but this was towards the end of the season and it was a busy season with less time for maintenance in between guests. End of August 2020 (Covid times). We also had a bit of a crazy thing happen to us while we were away without our children. I lost my cellphone the night before we left so we were away with only my husbands cell. We decided to go tubing down the Delaware river but could not get a taxi or an Uber to come pick us up. My husband get this... dropped our only phone and access to our children into the river and we couldn't find it!!!! We did have an old somewhat broken phone with no cell service that we had taken as back up because I didn't have my phone either. And we had a laptop. The family that owns this place were wonderful with regards to everything. They helped us level at the site, they drove us to and from the river and they offered to be our families emergency contacts. They gave us their phones so we could check in on the kids, and they said have them call any time of the day or night and they will come to our campsite and get us. What a relief! My husband and I enjoyed the rest of our time there. We hiked to a gorgeous view and they have a wolf preserve attached which we missed but it looked great. I loved the private and homey feel of this place and we cannot wait to bring the kiddos to experience all that Camp Taylor has to offer. Definitely a trip to remember and a place we will likely make a yearly trip too.

    Beautiful trees and lovely sites

My family and I have been enjoying beautiful Camp Taylor for a wonderful 20 years. If you want to experience a peaceful, relaxing and lovely place this is for you and your family! Beautiful quiet sites, with plenty of space between sites that are enveloped with lovely trees and special wildlife. The bathrooms are immaculate and warm free showers are an added bonus! Whether you enjoy sites with electric and water or primitive sites, the choice is yours! If you are part of a loud, disrespectful group this is not a place for you. Yes, they do have many rules, but that is what makes it enjoyable here. For example, quiet hours are respected, recycling rules are what any person should follow when camping, and being respectful to other campers should be a given. If you respect those rules, this is a place to wrap your arms around. Yes, bears that are a treat to see, they may wander but remember you are intruding on wildlife, so respect it. The campground is not only a business but a family who strives to make it a fun experience for all. As for the Taylor family, the are friendly, helpful, and respectful to all that arrive here. If you cant follow simple, fair rules you will be called out. Seems fair to me. I rate all of my visits as a five star, all the way. Thank you Camp Taylor for numerous years of great fun! Jennifer and Dave.

My buddy and I were going on a roadtrip to hike some waterfalls in the Northeast, and figured that the awesome reviews we saw of Camp Taylor was enough to warrant a four night stay. I couldn't have left more disappointed. The swimming area they had was tiny, the mini golf course was completely unkempt, and everything generally looked ill maintained. But, whatever, we were camping. Luxuries take a back seat. Something I can't forgive is their utter disregard for bear safety. If you're running a campground in a high bear population area, you shouldn't be putting trash cans at every single campsite you have. That's just inviting wildlife to come in for a free meal. But, for the sake of argument, if you do want trashcans everywhere, don't use simple buckets and lids. Opt for something bear resistant, so that they aren't tempted to come roaming around every night. Avoiding the red flags and against all common sense, we hid our food, moved our trash can as far as we could from our site, pitched our tents, and tucked in for the first night. At around 12:30, a black bear started sniffing around my buddy's tent and kept stuffing his snout under the rain fly. At 1:00, after we felt it was safe to move, we made a lot of noise while moving to the car, were we slept until 6 or 7. The next morning, we saw that the bear had knocked over our trash can and dug through what was inside. Before we headed out for our next hike we spoke to the office about our experience. They assured us that the bears were just doing bear stuff. They were right, we were in the bears' territory. So, in the pouring rain, we moved our tents down to a campsite right next to the front office. When we got back to camp that second night, we checked to make sure our tents were dry then went to take a shower. (Side note: having warm showers was fantastic, and are the only reason I'm giving Camp Taylor a 1 star review.) Coming back to the campsite at around 9:00, my buddy saw a bear at the adjacent campsite. There were no other obvious guests that night, and the office was closed. After sitting in the car for a few minutes to go over our options, we decided that staying wasn't worth the risk, and packed up to go home. When we were finishing packing our tents, we could hear something messing with the trash cans in the parking lot adjacent to our site. On our way out, we drove over there to see what was making the noise, and found a black bear just chilling; totally unfazed by our presence and our headlights. I've since learned that this is what the outdoor community refers to as a "bad bear." Before we left, we dropped a note at the office saying we felt unsafe due to bears roaming around like they owned the place, and told them we would call the next day. This afternoon (the day after we left), I called to inquire about a refund. Just to set the stage, we had to mail a physical check a few weeks ago as a deposit for the cost of the first three nights (non refundable) and paid by card for the fourth night on location. I told the woman who answered the phone about our adventure over the last couple of days and was met with: "Bears are a part of camping! ... We can't go giving a refund everytime someone sees a bear!" After some back and forth, they ultimately wouldn't refund us for any services not rendered. It's worth noting that camp was no where near full. It's not like our cancelled reservation would have cost them other business. Honestly, I feel like the whole experience was wholly unprofessional. The employees we dealt with didn't seem to have the safety of their guests in mind, and were more concerned with pulling in whatever money they could. And I get it, it is a business. I know you can't ask much of a campground, but I feel one thing you should expect is some peace of mind. In the end, I felt wholly unnerved due to the unwanted bear interactions, resulting lack of sleep, and further interactions with the staff. I urge you to bring your business elsewhere. TL;DR: Black bears aren't a valid excuse for even a partial refund.

Wont be back over $10 worth of fire wood.

Been here multiple times, never an issue. Brought some kiln dried fire wood to burn. Manager took it from us without notice. I complained that our wood was taken, and the guy was a total dick about it. I bought 2 bundles of their wood and it took forever to catch fire.

So I've picked up hiking the last few years because not only is it great exercise and you get to enjoy awesome views but it's free, unless you count the cost of getting there. My first attempt at hiking here was denied several weeks ago when I came on a Sunday at 10am, huge mistake! Because of the pandemic, only the Kittatinny Point Visitor Center lot is open, and by this time on a weekend the parking lot was packed to the gills. So do yourself a favor and either avoid coming here late, or not come at all on a weekend, otherwise the park ranger will turn you away if the lot is full. Today I got here at 9am. Score!!! Only a half-dozen cars were parked here on this Monday morning. Follow the signs to the beginning of the red dot trail, which is located on the west side of Route 80, to begin this challenging hike. There are other trails at Mount Tammany but the red-blue trail seems to most popular. Be warned, the trail is quite steep and will involve a lot of rock scrambles. I will admit my teenage son was flying up the mountain while I was taking it slow and gasping for air, haha! So if you haven't twisted an ankle or got bit by a rattlesnake or copperhead - yes, there is a signpost warning about the snakes, but I didn't see any - you will come upon two overlooks with beautiful views of Mt. Minsi and the Delaware Water Gap. The first viewpoint is about three-quarters of the way up the red trail and the other one is at the summit. You should definitely scramble down the rocks a bit if you're comfortable with it to get much better vistas. After taking in the views and catching your breath you will continue along the red dot trail which will connect you with the blue dot trail. Follow the blue trail to descend the mountain. While not as steep coming down, there are still lots of loose rocks that you need to be wary of. As you near the end of your hike on the blue dot trail, you are rewarded once again with a beautiful little waterfall. Hikers were wading in the stream here to cool off, but I took a pass. Once you've finished taking your pictures here, cross the bridge and continue on the white trail, which is actually part of the Appalachian Trail, and you will end up back at the beginning of the red dot trail where you began. You can now go back under the underpass to head back to your car at the visitor center.

The best part of this state park is the absolutely awesome astronomy club that has an observatory you can visit and use the super expensive telescopes to see other planets with the guide of an astronomer. The staff at the astronomy club are all eager and delighted to answer questions to all who are curious. Peering through a telescope to see the rings of Saturn is absolutely awesome! If interested the observatory is located within a stones throw from the main park entrance at 333 State Park Road, Great Meadows, NJ 07838. The observatory is free to visit but they do have donation bins there to help support their projects and facility. While this state park doesn't have as many camp sites as other locations I've visited, the astronomy club makes this place an epic visit!
