I've been a seasonal camper for 16 years and it's a great place to camp! Everyone is pleasant and it is a friendly, family-oriented place.

Just returned from a one-night group camping trip to Triple Brook. We picked this campground…read morebecause it's close to Delaware Water Gap and not a state campground (read: alcohol is permitted. Hooray for responsible consumption!). We were a little concerned at first because we couldn't make a reservation for a single night, and we had trouble finding a flexible arrangement for group camping. When we arrived at the campgrounds, the people who checked us in were cheerful, polite, and flexible. Instead of forcing all fifteen of us to get individual sites, they let us put two tents on each site-- a substantial savings for us, and much better for the communal gathering that we wanted. We had a cozy spot in the woods, next to a brook. Each individual site was on the small side, though there was enough room for a car, tent, fire ring, and picnic table in each one. I think the campground uses golf carts as taxis-- these golf carts drove by quite often, but other than that, our campsite felt pleasantly secluded. The grounds themselves are generally well-maintained. The bathrooms were a little nicer than what I've seen at other campgrounds-- the stalls had shower curtains strung up for privacy instead of doors, but they were well-stocked with toilet paper and soap. Each site had water and electricity hookups, great for washing cooking equipment and charging cellphones. The public grounds were a little iffy: the miniature golf course has seen better days (one of the obstacles had a giant orange traffic cone covering a sunken corner) and the pool was locked, though we couldn't see any notices about open hours. We didn't visit the animal farm, though we caught a glimpse of a pony grazing behind a fence. Overall, our group had an enjoyable night of grilling over the fire, making s'mores, singing campfire songs, and gazing at the trees. Since the individual campsites are small and spaced close together, I'm not sure what the experience would be like on a busy weekend, when all of the sites are full. During our trip, though, we had a tranquil spot on a good weekend, and we will definitely look to Triple Brook when we plan our next camping trip.

Growing up in northern NJ, PA and western NJ were always alien territory to me, and even as an…read moreadult, I never felt very comfortable driving through its cities and towns (even though many of them, objectively, are beautiful and interesting). Still, I have some history with the Delaware River and have always regarded it with a certain fondness (even though, as I've mentioned in other reviews, my "happy place" is the Hudson Valley and its own magnificent river). First experience was when I was an adolescent; my parents, hoping to simultaneously "get me out of my shell" and away from bad company, sent me to camp. The camp was a Lutheran camp in the wilds of western NJ, an area I was thoroughly unfamiliar with at the time. I hated it. Everything centered around sports and swimming, 2 activities I had zero interest in. At 1 point, an older "cabin mate" assigned the bunk underneath mine stuck a switchblade knife up through the mattress as I was resting above with my hands behind my head. Glancing to my left, I saw a blade coming up near my armpit (and this guy actually liked me; it was his idea of a joke). Another "cabin mate" cried constantly and was beaten up by everyone in the cabin, with the exception of me. Midweek, I told the camp director I wanted to leave, and he gave me a lecture about "being a man and stepping up to the plate in the face of adversity." I thought about running away, but I was in unknown, rural country, and I envisioned myself wandering around the woods, lost, hungry and confused (more so than normal). I stayed. But I loathed every minute of it. The following year, my parents sent me to camp yet again, but this time, it was a "wilderness" camp and there were actually moments I enjoyed. We rappelled down a mountainside. I learned a few curse words in Spanish. And we canoed down the Delaware River, camping at night in the woods alongside it. I have pleasant memories of that trip, the sun glistening down on the water out of the cloudless blue sky above, occasionally seeing mountains in the distance, passing underneath a bridge. I think it helped instill an early, meditative appreciation of the glories and mysterious loveliness of nature. Years later, I had to pick up my genetic grandmother in Doylestown (she was living in N.Carolina at the time and her son drove her up to this "halfway" point where I was to pick her up in my car and drive her to my brother's house in CT). I drove to Easton (somewhat familiar to me) and then headed south on 611, which ran alongside the Delaware. The road twisted, and turned, with the pristine allure of the Delaware to my left, and picturesque, wooded hillsides and homes to my right. My grandmother, who had been raised in Hoboken, appreciated the drive north as much as I did. She hadn't realized the area had such splendid, breathtaking beauty. Neither had I really, except for those flashes of memory from my adolescent canoe adventure. I haven't been back to that area in a long time, but I hope to, someday soon. It's closer than New England (where my heart has always been), and a restorative 1-day "road trip" might be just what the doctor ordered! If there is a God, it's in areas such as this that I have some inkling of His (or Her) presence.

NYS doesn't have a centralized booking system for campsites like NJ does which makes the, booking, experience so much easier especially for noobs like me. I visited the group camping site at this state park for a large meetup family group camping trip. I passed several solo camp sites down the road leading up to the group camp site and all the sites seemed to be situated nicely along the road side. Working facilities are near the individual camp sites but for the group sites you get the good 'ol fashion out house which I wasn't a fan of but managed to drop it like it's hot as needed right down into the abyss of a hole for the toilet. No showers or working facilities near the group site but you can drive over to one for a hot shower. The best part of this state park is the absolutely awesome astronomy club that has an observatory you can visit and use the super expensive telescopes to see other planets with the guide of an astronomer. The staff at the astronomy club are all eager and delighted to answer questions to all who are curious. Peering through a telescope to see the rings of Saturn is absolutely awesome! If interested the observatory is located within a stones throw from the main park entrance at 333 State Park Road, Great Meadows, NJ 07838. The observatory is free to visit but they do have donation bins there to help support their projects and facility. While this state park doesn't have as many camp sites as other locations I've visited, the astronomy club makes this place an epic visit!

Head to the website, book the date & time you want and you're done. www.watergapadventure.com/river-trips A few things worth noting: They offer multiple trip lengths. The standard 4-, 6- and 10-mile trip (Smithfield to Portland) are all booked generically and then when you get there you tell them what you want to do. All pricing is the same which believe me compared to others companies, that's very different - in a good way. They do offer two other longer trips but those require calls to the main office I assume to assess river conditions; your own competency and shuttle availability. The main office in Delaware Water Gap is very easy to find and there was plenty of parking on a quiet post-Labor Day Monday. You check in, you're handed a laminated map, life jacket and given a brief route explanation and then you're off in the van. One problem arose and it was kind of a PIA but it was worked around. Most companies have different types/sizes/models of kayaks and quite often, will ask you what you prefer. Not here. When we left the office, the guy driving didn't say a word to me until we get to Smithfield Beach to unload. He had a few kayaks pre-loaded in the carrier but definitely did not look at them before we left. One of them had a broken foot pedal that he said couldn't be used, another was very much designed for a smaller individual (i.e. if you're taller and/or taller & larger it ain't happening safely) which only left two tandem models. Using a tandem as a single individual is not the end of the world but especially when the seats are still left in the two person configuration (i.e. one front and one back versus the rear one being placed more towards the middle), it's a PIA to maneuver the craft and you are paddling harder to get the job done compared to a single. The scenery along the route was decent. You could see a bit of the Shawnee Resort and Golf Course, an old stone bridge abutment in the middle of the river, under and along 80 and then when you get into the Water Gap itself with the high cliff sides. Very picturesque. Once you go under the old train viaduct in Portland, you give the office a call for the shuttle to meet you at the out point which is at the Portland Pedestrian Bridge. The whole experience was about four hours door to door to cover the ten miles on the water plus the shuttle to & from the pick up and drop off points. Lots of nice scenery, due to the low water level there wasn't much in the way of current except for the area around viaduqt in Portland and even that wasn't bad. I'm not a big fan of the equipment here but I wouldn't let that deter me from coming back in the future for one of their northern longer trips.
