I have only been practicing a short time. There are some things that I am very educated on such as customer service, good people, and passionate individuals. This place checks all of those boxes. I was in the area for work and prior to my visit, I emailed the website asking about "drop ins". In probably an hour I received a very welcoming reply with the class schedule and asking about my abilities so I wouldn't be in over my head. BJ greeted me, showed me around, and got me set up for the Basics course that was taught by Tyler. Tyler did a great job describing the technical aspects of what he was teaching and got around to everyone making corrections. I learned a bunch. The facility is unreal. Very large, spotless, and well laid out. I hope that someday I can return. Pretty sure I forgot my mouthguard, but that's a small price to pay for a great experience.

It's old school, but clean as a whistle and such a professional atmosphere. "Old school" in the sense it's minimalist because you don't need a lot of fancy equipment for your coach to teach you martial arts. Also "old school" because the coaches are professionally trained - clearly taking mutual respect for coach and student as well as seriousness of your training program to heart. But - they meet you where you are - just push you to be your best. Here's my personal example: In California, I used to box in a micro gym (pre-COVID) then I had a personal trainer that I had to let go. Since November I have not been able to find a replacement. I came to Ohio for the fall and by happenstance landed here for a trial class. Bob gave me a full hour of mitts and noodles and got me back to training with the patience of a saint and the teachings of an expert. I have learned so much and had so much fun. Casey Boyer is an excellent instructor and the Krav team is a very friendly and fun group. The Krav Maga classes have really hit the spot! They foster a learning environment and are quick to say "take care of your training partner, we all have to go to work tomorrow." I'm over 50 and I Havent experienced anything that settles your mind better than BJJ. A trusted friend who was going to this gym got me started and his reasoning was that "these are the kind of people that we like to be around." ppl that don't take themselves too serious, work hard, have a good time and no ego. He was correct and I am fortunate to have started at Chitwood. This is the only BJJ gym I've been around, but it's easy to see how the wrong atmosphere could be very intimidating and turn someone off to Bjj altogether. So, If you're thinking about BJJ, I recommend starting with Chitwood. For myself, after a couple months it was obvious that if i didnt enjoy going to class, it will most likely because BJJ isn't for me and not because of the atmosphere or ppl there.

I told him yes but I'm probably going to only do no-gi because I didn't plan to train while I was here initially and didn't bring my stuff. He said told me it was no problem and he had a bunch of loaner gis that I was welcome to use. Chris is really down to earth and welcoming as well as all his students! The vibe is great at this gym. My son attends, and he LOVES this place. Let's start from the top: Matt "The Immortal" Brown: super chill dude. When he coaches, it's about technique, and my son loves it. Their other instructors - these are the guys I wish coached him in (some of) his other sports growing up. They are supportive, approachable, fun, and friendly. Yeah, sometimes it's too much for a kid, but they aren't getting yelled at, they aren't getting thrown into a gauntlet, they aren't getting picked on. They're being pushed in a positive manner. Hanging around, it's clear how friendly the people attending the other classes are, as well, which just speaks to the vibe of the place.
