Great balance between vinegar and sweet and a nice black pepper kick. We had our two Jack Russell pups with us (Whisky and Pippa). They shared a half chicken. We both LOVED the small bites of the chicken we "tested" before letting the pups have their lunch. The family who owned the business are kind, friendly and amazing cooks. Thank you for the perfect lunch and warm hospitality. Mona

You'd have to try real hard to put up a more un-appealing storefront and ordering station than those at Young's BBQ. Crude set-up, lackluster atmosphere with sloppy hand scribbled notes taped or thumbtacked to most of the walls, cheap paper plates, all plastic eating utensils -- just a sad way to see a restaurant being run. A smart investor would build a clean, pleasant, well-run barbecue restaurant in Lampasas... right next door. I had the pork ribs, cold and disappointing. The pinto beans were tasty but room temperature. "Would you like something to drink? Get it yourself!" And half of the drink selections were out of order with handwritten notes stuck to the dispensers. Our order was 2 pork ribs for me and tea to drink; a chopped sandwich and tea for my lunchtime companion... nearly $35 Never, ever again. By the way, the kitchen lady came out wearing a gray tee-shirt with a word across the front -- It said, "BULLS***!" I had to wholeheartedly agree. But that's about all they got right.

Fabulous barbecue! Drove to Llano on SH 29. It's on the right before you get in town…read more Inconspicuous signage says it's only open Saturday and Sunday. Opens at 11. You get to Tumlinson's before you reach the much more popular and more crowded Cooper's in town. Arrived around 1:30 on Saturday and there was only one car in the parking lot. No one else in the restaurant but no matter, the food is incredible! I don't believe there is something as the "best" barbecue. I think that there is a sort of supreme level that has a great smoke ring, a great bark, quality meat and basically melts in your mouth. So tender you can break it up with a fork but I might use a knife so I can create smaller pieces. THIS PLACE IS ALL OF THAT with perfect rendering and a master class in what a brisket should be. 5 out of 5. As good as any I have ever had and what I expect as the top of what barbecue brisket can be. The ribs were cooked perfectly with bountiful meat on the bone. The rub was not noteworthy but they were tasty and led me to use the sauce. The sauce is excellent - thick and vinegarry with a hint of sweetness. Only ordered one side - the potato salad. Much better than most. Not what I would put in the best category but totally worth eating. The pickles and onions? Wow! I wouldn't bother mentioning unless they were amazing. (Or terrible.) These were amazing! What I loved was that they cut up the onions in chunks rather than slices. The pickles were chunks of whole dills and not canned sliced pickles. Finally, I'll get to the ambiance. It's spacious with lots of seating inside. Good a/c. Two small windows that look out across the beautiful Hill Country for miles. Since the wildflowers were in epic form on the drive, the view was amazing this day. But it would be excellent without them. I should have taken a picture but I was too busy eating. We left Tumlinson's SmokyTop and went to Cooper's and as a comparison, I give the edge to Tumlinson's. The briskets were both in the same top echelon of what I expect a smoked brisket to be, but I think Tumlinson's was just slightly better. But where Tumlinson's crushes Cooper's is in the ambiance/atmosphere. Cooper's seating is indoor with no real outdoor tables. So you eat in a confined, windowless room that is not inviting. No music playing. Tumlinson's with no one else in it was memorable. I couldn't wait to get out of Cooper's. Felt a little creepy. Finally, Tumlinson's was selling brisket at $24 per pound while Cooper's was $26.99. This part is insignificant to me for the most part but there is a real price difference. Final verdict - Tumlinson's 5 out of 5. Cooper's 4.8 out of 5.

This is not a baked potato. This is a full-blown Texas barbecue masterpiece stuffed into a potato…read moreskin. A perfectly baked russet, split open and swimming in melted butter. Then comes a generous layer of savory beans, followed by a mountain of tender, smoky chopped brisket that falls apart with every bite. A rich, tangy barbecue sauce soaks into everything, while crisp pickles cut through the richness with the perfect bright snap. Cool sour cream and a blanket of shredded cheese melt into the hot toppings, tying the whole thing together in pure comfort food glory. Every component hits exactly right. It is smoky, savory, creamy, tangy, and just the right amount of sauce without a single note out of place. It's massive, messy in the best way, and so ridiculously delicious you'll be scraping the skin clean and still wishing there was more. Do yourself a favor and get there early. This potato and their barbecue are the real deal. They have amazing customer service, too!
