Kayaking @ Trinity Lake (with rentals from KOA)

I actually found this gem of a camping site last year after getting major FOMO from seeing cute pics of this place on a friend's IG. This campsite was so easy to use and had everything from bathrooms to laundry rooms to make our stay enjoyable. We were so in love with this glamping vibe that we sought out other KOA campsites throughout California after visiting this very one. Yet, nothing ever compared to our first KOA experience @ Trinity Lake. This time around, I reserved a group tent for myself, my partner, and a few of my friends. Although this location took us 8 hours to get to (we left during rush hour), it was well worth it! We loved every single minute of it- from the kayaking to campfires. Overall, I give this KOA location a 5/5 for its views, accessible lake, and kind staff member Robin! Pros: Gorgeous location, grocery store available, lake on site, kayaks for rent! Cons: One employee @ KOA Trinity center was a bit rude to us. My friend and I had to do laundry after propane spilled on her blanket. We were struggling to find the laundry room that was open (even with the map, it can be confusing to find) and we asked Sarah for her help. She was visibly annoyed that I asked her for help and didn't end up helping us. Although she wasn't the friendliest, Robin (another employee) was super kind to us the entire time and made us feel welcome.

    Epic slide!

This was our first trip to this KOA, however I have camped at many other locations on Trinity Lake. This one is the most expensive but with plenty more amenities. They have a walk up restaurant that served hamburgers and ice cream amongst other things. They had a playground for the kiddos and an insane slide! Unfortunately we couldn't find a good spot to walk to the lake and get in. The lake is low and the mud is thick. So we opted to not swim but instead sit at our cabin spot and play cards. I do feel it's a bit overpriced, I would think I could've found an AirBnB that was larger for the same cost. But we had planned on a group gathering her back in March (before Covid). So since we couldn't gather with friends that had RVs it seems silly to pay so much for a cabin when we realized an Airbnb would've been cheaper. The cabin was very clean and updated. The kitchen was stocked with everything we needed. (No food supplies however so don't forget your spices and cooking necessities!) The AC ran great! We were happy since it was 90+ outside, however the room was far away from the AC unit so a ceiling fan would have been great! We ended up sleeping on the pullout couch the second night since it was closer to the AC unit and had a ceiling fan. I'm not sure I'd return to this cabin, for the price I think it's a bit steep.

This was our second time staying at the Trinity Lake KOA. Our first time was two years ago for Fourth of July 2020. It was absolutely perfect, plenty of games to play and they had a snack shack and general store. The pool was closed due to Covid the first time we went which was ok, the lake was low but you were still able to walk down to it and float or take your boat out. Fast forward to this years trip, which took place the weekend after Fourth of July 2022, it was OK. We stayed in tent site 125. The site was beautiful besides for the fact the nearest bathroom was closed because it needed to be repaired. The second closest bathroom was a bit of a long walk, especially for someone who is 37 weeks pregnant. But I guess you just gotta roll with the punches. The pool was open this time. It was alright, kinda dirty from everyone's feet and a little crowded but it was refreshing nonetheless. The snack shack was closed the whole time we were there which kinda sucked because we were looking forward to trying some ice cream. The lake was almost completely dried up which was super super disappointing to see. It's now a ATV and dirt bike racing area which is cool but still sad to see how low the lake is. The staff was super nice, hopefully next time we come the lake will get some rain and the bathrooms will be fixed.

    Deluxe 1 Bedroom Cabin Bedroom

We spent 4th of July weekend here and stayed in a 1 bedroom Deluxe Cabin this time. We have stayed in the 2 bedroom Deluxe Cabin multiple times and will most definitely be doing that again as those are bigger and they definitely seem to take more pride in those. They're bigger and more spacious too. 2 stars off for the cabin situation. Cabin: I confirmed multiple times with staff prior to our arrival the amenities it included and the cabin number. Arrived and right off the bat I notice we don't have a charcoal bbq or picnic table. I was told ALL cabin types have bbqs, fire rings, and tables. They promptly brought us a table, but said they didn't have enough bbqs for everyone so basically we were SOL. We were staying with a large group and upon check in we found out they changed all our cabin numbers and we were all spread out and they couldn't change it back because the others were now occupied. Walk in the cabin and it was just "meh". Very very old appliances, a microwave on a side table, small fridge, dollar store plastic cookware. They do have plates, bowls, a small keurig and coffee, measuring cups, paper towels, dish soap (but a wet, used dirty sponge), etc. We did bring rolls to bake and found that they don't have pans for the oven. Our small trash can got full quick and they don't keep extra trash bags inside it. Had to keep asking for more. Our slider handle was falling halfway off and it was extremely difficult to lock. Noticed our bedroom had 3 curtain panels on it (one mismatched) and when I went to close the curtains at night in the living room there was only one panel. The other was the mismatched one in the bedroom that we had to take off and put back on the living room rod, only to find that the reason someone put it in the bedroom was because the panels in there were so small almost half the window was visible. We had to use a towel to hang to cover the rest. There was an AC, but the knob to adjust coolness was completely broken off so we couldn't control that part. Bathroom water pressure was hit or miss and after you flush the toilet you have to wait for the entire tank to fill up with water again before anyone else can use and flush. Shower had shampoo and body wash but was missing conditioner. There was a blow dryer. They had extra toilet paper, a broom and dust pan, and towels. But honestly, the entire cabin was just a mixture of things they found to put it together and they use the cheapest materials possible. We even found a candy wrapper by the bed upon check in (obviously great cleaning). The bed by the way is very uncomfortable. Our entire group felt the same about their cabins. One even said their fridge was in their living room! You're definitely paying too much for these cabins. Grounds: Definitely the best grounds we've seen at a KOA as far as being able to walk down a trail to the lake or around the tent sites or for the kids to adventure. There are 2 playgrounds, mini golf, banana bikes, and a dog run that's just dirt with a fence around it. The snack shack has great food items. The store had a great selection of snacks and souvenirs. If you buy ice or fire wood they will deliver it to your site. There is a pool with tables and chairs, but if those are all taken be prepared to bring your own chairs so you don't sit in the dirt. There's no grass. The pool was filthy due to the dirt and the amount of people inside and our kids 30 mins in said their eyes were burning so they both got out. We did the banana bikes and we had a great time although they're very used and rusty. Couldn't get the seats to adjust forward or back. Staff: SUPER nice staff. We didn't meet one person that wasn't helpful and had a smile on their face. All of the cabin issues come down to the owner and management and their failure to take pride in their establishment. Everyone we meet while we are there are always so fun and nice. This is definitely a party KOA. Loud music and people at night (which we are fine with!), but that's why we get a cabin for the nighttime so the kids can sleep easier. A lot of ATV's and dirt bikes that ride around the campsite. It's honestly a great vibe when you're here and hanging out and socializing. If they took time to update those cabins and make sure they were all in tip top shape and consistent, it would be 5 stars.

There is a parking spot for site 11 across the campground road near a pit toilet. Flush toilets are located on the other side of the parking lot, which is right next to site 10. Site 10 seemed like it had a nice lake view. You can see the lake through the trees from site 11. There are no bear boxes! You store food and toiletries in your car at night. Wing wildlife included mosquitoes (light), yellow jackets (heaviest mid morning), and very loud cicadas. My ears were ringing like I went to a loud concert. I have to assume that's seasonal. There's a "boat launch" past the flush toilets near the tent cabins that was nice for setting up a few camp chairs and entering the water in floaties. There were a few other beaches further on but they were full. There was a kerfuffle over an inflatable kayak while we were there so keep an eye on your things! The lake was shockingly not ice cold like many CA lakes I've been in but it was also 100 degrees out. We stayed in for hours. So nice! Intimate campground with sloped sites and nice lake access- overall a pleasant stay!

So let me take another tack and make sure that this is the place for you. First off, Mountain Meadow Resort isn't for everyone. If you can't be unplugged and off the grid, this place isn't for you. Seriously, there is no wi-fi, your smartphones are only useful as cameras because there is no cell signal, and the generator that provides electricity only runs from 6:30am to 11pm. Bookings typically go from Saturday to Saturday so if the prospect of not being able to check your texts, voicemail, e-mail and social media for a week gives you the heebee jeebees, then this place is not for you. Second, this place is remote. The resort is most definitely in the WILDerness. In the four years that I've gone I've come across black bears and been within spitting distance of a rattle snake, rattle going off, coiling and ready to strike. The nearest medical facility is 2 hours away by car. And that's not counting the fact that you could be half a dozen miles into a hike away from the resort and your parked car when you get injured. If that seems a bit too off the beaten track for you, then this place is not for you. ...Still reading? Then you must be adequately intrigued as to why people go and keep coming back to this wonderful place. And if the you're not scared off then you will likely fall in love with this place as I have. Read on if you want my attempt to add information you might be hoping to gleam from reading these reviews. This is a family run camp. Decades ago a group of families bought the place and ran it together. Their children now run the resort and while you're there you'll likely see the next generation starting to help out as well. Staff all have a direct connection to the resort via family, being visitors in years past themselves when they were younger, or being recruited by one of the first two categories. What that means is that your initial visit feels like you're an interloper at a family reunion, but on repeated trips you begin to feel that you too are part of the family, because you truly are. That sentiment permeates through and is felt not just by my wife and me but by my kids as well. I would love it if my kids worked here when they're older and if I could spend extended time helping out after I retire, whenever that is. Days can be spent on hikes, strenuous or relaxing. Obviously the former will reward you with amazing views. Unlike, say Yosemite, you could do your whole hike and never come across another group. If you do, it certainly will only be a handful. There are lakes to swim in and vistas to take in. The resort is positioned so that you can make a day hike where others will often have to backpack in and out. Sometimes you'll be tempted to backpack yourself and maybe stay over a night or two but what always draws me back is the food - homemade and delicious. Dinners are amazing. Lastly, the kids love it because of the independence and being outdoors. The "kids dinner" before the "adult one" is as much a highlight for the parents as it is the kids. More importantly my tech savvy kids being raised in the heart of Silicon Valley have no qualms with Mountain Meadow being a "screen free" place. And that alone makes our annual trip worth it.

Most hikers stop at Heart Lake which is a scenic spot with granite on one side and on the outlet side of the lake for Shasta views.
