They sell the blood you donate to hospitals and clinics in need of blood. They legitimately do provide life saving blood to people in need as opposed to other plasma places that will sell your blood or blood products to companies that use it to manufacture beauty products. The few times that I went to Vitalant the Phlebotomist caused extensive bruising to my arm at the site of venipuncture. This is from not providing direct pressure to the site after discontinuance of the line. Like I said they are a legit place to donate blood that will actually benefit people in medical need of it.

They are often under-staffed and don't have the right supplies. Twice in the last month they didn't have chloroprep. Once they ran to get it from another location the other time I had to wait 2 days which caused me to miss a $50 bonus. After new donor period the pay is about same if you get 2 donations each week but CSL has a more customer friendly scale, measuring your donations over 5 week period. Half the staff seems new and under-trained so it depends who is working.

He too had an attitude and asked someone else to finish my intake. The nerves. As I was leaving he came to the desk as if he had something to say, so I told him why I was angry. This simple tool had the AUDACITY to say my TONE was disrespectful, and wanted to argue that it wasn't 5 min. WTF? He was the disrespectful one. I don't owe him shit. And it doesn't matter if it was 3 minutes of my time he wasted! He still wasted my damn time. He's supposed to maintain decorum. And he wouldn't have gotten an attitude if he had of been respectful from the beginning and took me right away, instead of making me wait until he finished his dumb ass PRIVATE story. We dont get paid to give blood. Its a completely altruistic gesture to help my community. These employees need to tighten up and give respect to those who are giving their life's blood. Apparantly, for Vitalant, it is not for the reason you and I believe. A month ago I made an appointment with them for a draw on Wednesday at 12 noon. I'm trying to be good and I'm working so I have to keep a schedule. I got there at 12 and noticed that there were three people waiting ahead of me and most of the blood letting chairs were full. Strangely, there was a receptionist and three other women and one man, all employees standing around and talking. I waited 20 minutes and a woman started the preliminary interrogation and finger stick. I told her that I had an appointment reservation, and asked why the delay. She said that they got busy and apologized for the wait. Really? After this I was placed in a chair and waited 12 more minutes for a vampire to show up and start the festivities. By now, I had been there a little over half an hour. I told her that I had an appointment and have to get back to work. For me, a donation only takes 8 minutes. She apologized and said sorry, we got busy. Really? I think she was a supervisor because of the conversations she was having with other employees. I asked her why I had to wait since I had an appointment, and wasn't that the purpose of making a reservaiton? She just smiled and apologized again. (I know, this is starting to sound like a Seinfeld episode, right?) This is nonsense and a bad business model. Donors are trying to help other people. When she stuck me with the needle it hurt a lot and I said so. Again, she just smiled and said, "I'm sorry". Medical workers must say I'm sorry dozens of times a day for one reason or another. It only marginalizes us and It means nothing to them. I told her that when I leave, I'm going to back my car into her car door, but, she is not to worry because I will leave a post-it note on her door that says "I'm sorry". I did not actually do that but I wish I had. She finished and then walked away to talk with three other employees. She did not say that I was done, or tell me what to do next. After waiting for another six minutes to finish her socializing I got up and left. I believe that medical workers in genera have very poor interpersonal skills. They are not emotionally or psychologically prepared to work with customers that demonstrate any boundaries with them. They either freeze-up, or dismiss us. My advice to you concerning interactions with the medical industry in general is to REFUSE TO BE A PATIENT. BE A CUSTOMER AND EXERCISE YOUR AUTONOMY. How come we can't leave zero stars???

Over time the pay decreased substantially and I noticed that bottled water was no longer made available. My last four or five donations was absolutely horrible. Apparently they reduced the amount of medical tape provided to insure no bloody incidents decreased because out of the last five donations I had two blow outs. I was pouring blood from the needle insertion point and on one occasion the blood ruined a 200 dollar jacket. On my last visit which was only a 45 dollar payment I decided it wasn't enough to risk having blood squirting out of my arm. I was disappointed to say the least.

The whole time he was very short with me and did not care when I expressed how bad the phobia was. He was extremely unprofessional and told me "Well how can it really be, I do it to babies?" He didn't use the butterfly needle either. When he pulled out the needle I told him "okay wait, I'm not ready I'm not ready!" And he didn't care and stabbed me with the needle so hard. I started balling my eyes out and it ended up blowing out my vain! I've never had that happen. This behavior is unacceptable. I have never felt so violated by a professional like this.
