So we got super lucky and as we where about to leave the gallery the owner (Brandy I believe) walked in. She invited us to tour the other side (studio space maybe) and I'm so glad she did. The art is incredible! I was drooling on all the pieces (sorry). Anything from paintings, sculptures, bird cages to a rad ass bike. I loved it! I wanted to take a picture, of like everything! Yet, I wasn't sure if I was allowed to. So for respect for the artist I decided not to. Brandy has done an amazing job on this place! I must find a way to become her friend. But I might not be cool enough, she kicks ass. I'll have to stop by again, and no not to stalk her but to visit a new exhibition.

The unofficial launch date for this contemporary art space is mid-October, but the venue has been…read moremaking underground waves in the art and music category since spring. Something is happening there. No one is altogether sure why this place works, but it does. We think the resident art collective that founded the studio space is only doing this because no one else is. There seems to be one hell of a demand for it though. Praised by bicycle-riding hipsters, Schlitz-drinking indie darlings, and second-hand fashion kids of every variety, Flotsam studio parties have nearly achieved cult status and the red ribbon hasn't even been cut yet. Featuring bizarre sculptural works, nerdy art objects and eccentric collage, the priorities here are clear: keep the scene small but keep the scene alive. Aside from the artwork (which is concentrated and minimal) the space boasts American red brick walls, a vaulted tin ceiling and decorative stylings that are decidedly homemade. With books and sneakers suspended from the ceiling, tumbleweed chandeliers and vinyl records serving as a window blind, the place seems less like a traditional art gallery and more like an homage to DIY culture. Located near the intersection of Swiss Avenue and Hall St., Flotsam is the brainchild of resident artists Evan Horn, Elliott Horn and Cody Ross, but the list of contributors is not only long, but inspired. With the closing of Trees, Gypsy Tea Room and other medium-sized music venues in Dallas and Denton, this gallery/music hall has hand-selected bands and party anthems that attempt to articulate where most of us wish Dallas was going. One thing is certain, when this neighborhood scene is operating at full volume, the participants are very present, the energy is palpable and the zip-code is rendered irrelevant. Dig.

I am happy beyond words with Miss Nelum and the love she has for what she does…read more She is not only an amazing teacher she an amazing artist. My daughter has excelled not only in academics but social skills, good manners, loving, caring for others as well as loving the environment. She provides hands on experience caring for animals and the environment. She also organizes a large homeless feeding every year where all families and friends get together for a good cause. The In home Montessori itself is clean and tidy. Being a mom this is something I am always picky about. Since it is in Miss Nelum's home the house itself is very pretty, cozy and homely. There's enough space for kids to walk around and do their work. She also has a nice yard for the kids to play. After finding out she was an artist and has art classes in her studio, I enrolled my daughter for art classes as well. The Montessori follows CDC guidelines during this pandemic. As a mom I recommend this Montessori to any parent who prefers one-on-one attention for kids as well as raising them as good citizens to this world.

Both my children attended MCHS from ages 3-6. They have different personalities. My daughter is serious and has always been an old soul. My son is a high-energy joker. Each thrived in this environment. Why I'd choose MCHS again: 1. Quality of the teachers. Phenomenal guides including the administration and the aftercare which as a working mom was a huge priority for me. The director is incredibly competent and has a long tenure at the school. When I asked my now 9-year old daughter what she thought people should know about MCHS she said, "The teachers at MCHS are loving and kind and treat the kids like they are capable." 2. Sense of empowerment that my kids have developed here. Kids love work and purpose. Montessori teaches kids they can learn to do things for themselves. From ironing to tying their shoes to using wooden blocks to literally build a four digit number, so they understand the physical representation of the number. 3. Each of my kids has developed an impressive attention span which I credit largely to their time at MCHS. My six year old son designs and embroiders pillows. My daughter and her best pal used to write and illustrate stories together, some of which were more than thirty pages long. They didn't get this focus from me. I thank MCHS! I'd also emphasize the benefits of staying at MCHS through kindergarten. It really does all come together in the third year and provides a strong foundation moving forward. At MCHS, each of my children learned to write in cursive. They learned to read. They developed dear friends. They felt accountable for showing the smaller kids the ropes in the classroom. Not only looking out for them, but sometimes tutoring the little kids, reinforcing their own learning in the process.

My earliest friends and I traded Muscle Men, Garbage Pail Kids, MASK, GI Joe, and Transformers. We dug up bones in the yard. We pushed old tires around and pretended they were cars, playing Knight Rider. This building has a lot of sentimental value to me, and I would never forget it. The people back then, in that place and time, were real good, too. When I went there, this was both a grade-school AND a daycare. My Mom went to SMU, so this is where I went to kindergarten, but I eventually transferred to a suburban school in the far north Dallas neighborhood when my father remarried. I can't even begin to tell you how many hours I spent in this building, the kinds of friends I made there. Things were so simple then. I have warm, bright memories of those times.

They leaned all their weight against the babies when washing their faces in the sink (which can injure their organs), lifted them by one arm (which can dislocate their shoulder), grabbed them aggressively, shoved food in their mouths aggressively, made them stay in their cribs for several hours, yelled at them for wanting to get up or for crying, swaddled them when that's against the law in daycare, and spent a lot of time texting & talking on their phones instead of watching the babies. The Lead Teacher in the Toddler Room was very impatient & squeezed their shoulders when they didn't obey, instead of using redirection. I explained these things to the director, but she said, "It's going to be a lot of work to replace those teachers." I later asked her what she was going to do about the incidents & she said her lawyer told her not to talk to me about it, so I reported the incidents to Child Care Licensing. They visited the school, but weren't able to do anything because I didn't have pictures or videos. I asked the director to install cameras, but she said no. Something must be done to bring awareness to the parents. Those lead teachers are still there & the director doesn't want to make the effort to replace them.
