Many organizations organize as non profits with intentions of being an influencer in the community. I've watched others over time develop national reputations supporting local art. Located east of Highway 75 near the downtown exit, it is easy to access. There is a large free parking area on the grounds. The facility has a two theaters, an auditorium, exhibition space, a classroom, and outdoor space. There are a variety of activities happening here throughout the year, and they are all in support of the preservation and development of the Latino and Hispanic arts and culture. I met a few friends here on a Saturday morning to see the free art exhibit, "Quince Latinas". It was the last day of the exhibit. In fact the art was being removed later in the day and being replaced with a new exhibit. We were fortunate to run into one of the artists, Diana Marquis. She was kind enough to give us a tour of the facility as well as share in depth knowledge about the art and artists whose work was on display, including her own. She encouraged us to look through the gallery first on our own, and then she walked us through telling us about artists like:the 90 year old artist who went to Italy regularly to take marble sculpture classes. She had two pieces on exhibit. Several artists had advanced degrees in the sciences. One had unique pieces such as soap art of dogs. This is a small gallery. If you are in the area, you can easily view the art during a work break. They offer art classes here for a fee. Be sure to check out their website for their movie, exhibit, and class schedules.

It all started innocently enough... I have always loved art but I've never had a painting class, so…read morewhen I saw the Art Lab list a class for people who wanted to try oil painting (bucket list activity for me), I could not get on their books fast enough!! When I stepped into the Frocksy on the adorable Garland square, it was like walking into the cutest little funky wonderland I ever saw. I made a mental note to do a little shopping on my way out. Tucked in the back of the Frocksy was the art lab, and my instant friend slash teacher, Trayc Claybrook. After that session, where she introduced me to oil painting with a still life exercise of an apple and a pear, I was hooked and knew these classes needed to be a regular thing for me! Not only is Trayc an incredible, accomplished artist and teacher who has taught as far away as Iceland, (how cool is that?) but she is also hilarious, kind, and oh-so patient with me, as an overzealous newbie. She meets you where you are in your artist journey, encourages growth, but also lets you discover things on your own, which is the best way to learn art. It is easy to see that not only is Trayc gifted as an artist, but she absolutely has a gift as an instructor. I'm wrapping up my second master study painting with her now, and gearing up to start my third. These painting classes are my "treat-yo-self" activity a few times a month, and I am so grateful that something so cool exists so close to me. If you are on the fence about booking a class, just do it. You won't regret it.

As fate would have it, I was able to do that a few months ago as a local poet I follow hosted a poetry slam here. It was the perfect location as it allowed the two different worlds of artistic expression to collide. Add to that, the gallery is already a mix of art, music, and fashion so adding spoken word to the mix was very complementary. The gallery itself, contains a diverse collection of art from many different artists. The gallery does an excellent job of pushing the boundaries of tradition art. Exhibits range from paintings, etc. to exhibits that are both immersive and experimental; those that might overwhelm the senses. While Gallery Defi features local artists, they are part of a global community and feature artists from across the globe.
