The large Malbec and Sauvignon Blanc arrived promptly - always a good sign Sea bass fillets for my wife, a sirloin with peppercorn sauce for me, 2 cheese cakes, a liqueur coffee and a double Hennessy with the espresso. £112 plus a good tip Very well cooked food all rond - definitely would return

My partner found this gem of a restaurant online. Situated in a back street in Looe we found this…read morelisted building. It is worth visiting their website to read about its history. We were there for the food even though my partner hadn't realised that it was the Euro semis and England were playing. A wonderful menu which made our choices so difficult. Starters we chose were wonderfully light whitebait and crab cakes with a chilli jam. Do what we did, eat half and then swap plates. Gives you the flavour of both. For our main dish we both chose pan-fried shellfish medley of scallops, king prawns, mussels, clams and garlic. Wow, that was so delicious. I requested the recipe of the jus and the answer was just garlic butter and parsley. There was a mysterious addition which was kept secret. A problem with a restaurant like this is that, as you are eating, food comes out of the kitchen and all the time we think 'wish I had chosen that'. I have decided that we need another trip, soon, down to Looe and then I can try the rest of the menu. I mentioned the Euros semi. Well, the front of the house manager, the owner I believe, kept everyone that requested it an update every few minutes. Thank you. See you on our next trip down the West Country.

My expectations were not high but I was pleasantly surprised by my meal of chicken fajitas that came with sour cream, guacamole, salsa and flour tortillas. The fajitas had onion and peppers and was nicely seasoned. The flour tortillas were not great but ok and the rest was very good. For a starter we had the macaroni bites that came with a pepper jam that was delicious. my daughter thought the nachos were great. Her husband had steak with peppercorn sauce that he really liked. All in all a pleasant and unexpected surprise. Though I wouldn't see a need to go again this trip, was glad to have tried it.

Pepes is a mexican restaurant. Now this place has no faults,…read moreexcept that it opens during peak seasons and the odd night other than that. Mexican food, drink and decor all add up to make this one great place to eat. They sell the usual fajitas and enchalades too. The whole restaurant is themed , in great bright colours of reds and yellows to make it authentic. They also have mexican music, mainly by the Gypsy Kings. One night when i went here we had sangria and were listening to the music when we realised it was hotel california. When you hear this with a mexican twist it is not only hillarious but somewhat cool at the same time!! the service we recieved was second to none absolutely great. The food was also brilliant could not fault either of them. Then we have the prices , which again are great for the amount of food you get. The whole experience was amazing, i would go back as much as i could if lived closer. Its just soo nice! If you stay in looe or visit , make a trip to this restaurant, it wasnt packed when we went in, but there were people in there, a great little hidden gem!

I got a bambino pizza and a salad. They use real wood Fire oven to cook the pizzas in and it was really beautifully cooked. The salad was delicious but just lacked that little extra (maybe basil?). My dining companion had linguine which was just a bit undercooked. All in all a great lunch spot, reasonably priced and very welcoming staff! Just needs that extra umph on the food front to take it to a 5 star. But they're fairly new so there's time....

Glad to say we got involved early doors on the second night. As you'd expect on a mid-September Wednesday early evening in a tourist hotspot in Cornwall, it wasn't exactly heaving. Nowhere is at 5.30. Too early for the ravers, too late for the biddies, perfect for the young-parent crowd, which we are firmly in the camp of. Speaking of, there was another young family there (who incidentally we'd seen wandering the cobbled streets of Polperro earlier in the day) and a middle aged, childless couple in situ. Regardless, the service was exceptional. The very clearly authentically Italian server was attentive and helpful throughout and happy to chat and give recommendations. In addition to this, he went above and beyond for aforementioned Baby G - he was grizzling, as is his way at the moment, which was obvious for all in the restaurant to see. I was walking him around when he offered some free breadsticks to keep him occupied. It worked! He also engaged with Asa in a card swapping game - coincidentally (?) handing over a 'rate us on Tripadvisor' card in exchange for one Asa had just picked up. Cynical, moi?! Couple more little, but noticeable, things - he washed up ALL of the dude's paraphernalia, plate, bib and spoon. Really appreciated that. And also the food came at the perfect temperature - not too hot as it always is in every other restaurant we go to, thereby incurring a tentative wait while it cools. They clearly know how to deal with kids, and are truly a 'family friendly' place. Onto the food - Em had a Bianco pizza (garlic butter, pulled pork, mushrooms and rosemary) which was genuinely delicious. Creamy and packed with flavour, with a crispy thin base, and cooked to perfection. To the point where I wish I'd had the same. Honestly one of the best pizzas I've tried for a long time. My beef ragu was very nice, beef shin and pork ragu making the difference between it and a spag bol. Big chunks of meat, spaghetti with the right amount of bite and bounce, and seasoned to perfection. Asa's penne pomodoro was very well received - he essentially inhaled it. Which is about as good as you can expect from a bebe. Dessert was 2x affogato's, which I haven't had for a while. The gelato was gorge - creamy af, and the espresso was lovely but would have preferred it hot. Drinks-wise, Em had her standard prosecco, I had a next level G&T- Malfy Rosa with pink grapefruit. Apparently it's a Sicilian pink grapefruit gin with a hint of rhubarb. I've already got a bottle on order. The overall experience at Mama J's was of sheer joy and blissful happiness. Get here. Now.

We had 3 x cod and chips but found that one of the pieces of fish was badly overcooked, to the point that the fish had gone yellow, it was so dry..! The batter was also pretty terrible, resembling more of a thick doughnut batter than the usual light, crispy fish type... Anyway, the chips were pretty good. Not too upset at this point, my Dad decided to take the overcooked fish back to the diner and see if they'd replace it. This is where it went downhill really; he was met by a lady (apparently the owner's wife) who obviously didn't have the first clue or experience regarding customer service and who didn't empathise, apologise or even handle the situation in a polite manner. The complaint could have been defused in seconds - as i say, my Dad really wasn't that bothered (these things happen) but she managed to make it a problem by telling him he was entitled to his opinion but they had been frying fish for years and always did it this way. Dad tried to point out that this wasn't true, as we had also had two pretty reasonable bits of fish which weren't overcooked. He also pointed out that he didn't need to fall back on his expertise as a trained chef, Royal Navy caterer and former Fish & Chip shop owner to know when fish was well ovecooked, dry and unpleasant - it really wasn't a matter of opinion, more fact. Unfortunately she wasn't having any of it. It's a shame as the rest of the meal was ok and we didn't really have any reason not to re-visit, if it hadn't been for the arrogance of this lady and her naive approach to customer service. Most people in service industries nowadays know how important good service is to people and that a potential complaint can be turned into a very positive experience if it's handled well - but not in this case, I'm afraid. If you care about being treated well by people who value their customers, there are plenty of other good chippys in Looe who probably cook a better portion of fish anyway...
