The welcome was first class and the guy who showed us to our table could not have been more attentive. The ordering process at the till was ok as was the menu choice (both hand battered cod and the fish pie were spot on). The kids menu is reasonably priced (the pizza was great, although the macaroni cheese wasn't to my daughters palate...nor mine). The choice of real ale is limited to two ; Bombardier and Spitfire which I class as the 'Fosters' of the real ale world...however, they were kept well and pleasantly surprised. The big plus is the FREE kids play area which was suitable for both daughters (4 and 2) as they have a separate toddler section although both ran round the main play area. Meal cost £40 for 2 adult mains, 1 desert, 2 kids meals with deserts, 2 pints and fruit shoots an a bottle of Peroni...drinks are on the steeper side but expected in this style pub/restaurant. They also have FREE wifi which is good enough to run you-tube to keep the kids entertained with stories when they're getting restless esp waiting for food which wasn't that long...nice focus for us all reading them stories and keeping kids with us rather than losing them to the play pen before the meal. And struggling to get them back. The evening was what I expected from this type of pub/restaurant esp the price range vs food quality v ambiance etc...recommend for those young kids but also groups and couples as the play area is off to one side.

We didn't pre book, but we went to eat at the restaurant where 15 people eating. The rest of restaurant was empty. We asked for a table of four and were told they may not be able to get us in. The problems started from there. Eventually they allowed us to eat ( great hospitality) not. The portion size left us all hungry. Portion size was more like a child's portion. Later I tried to get some sleep, but my room was above the main entrance automated door going all ngt. When complaining that I had no sleep. I was told hotel was full and given a email address to complain to. I was also told by reception that this was the last room they leave to book out. ( which means they know they have a problem with this room. We were told by reception breakfast was cooked and continental.. Cooked was very greasey parts of it cold. Continental was cakes and compot, no meats cheese. I sent my complaint of. I had no reply, so my wife phoned. Only to be told we had done everything wrong and there is no refund. I will never stay or recommend a Premier in again. And would advise others to find cheaper accommodation with hospitality. And better service.

On walking in I was given a warm welcome and instantly offered drinks and despite there being a traditional bar, I never had to step a foot near it as the waiting service was second to none. The Lounge/bar offers the ideal environment for pre-dinner drinks and houses a relaxing log fire where we were served drinks and ordered our food before being taken to our table which is a nice touch. The menu is short yet varied and boasts 100% all local produce and locally reared meats. Freshly baked bread with dipping oils were offered complimentary and on the table when we sat down. The food was presented in an artistic fine-dine style and the portion sizes are good and filling. The price is defiantly appropriate to the service and excellent food and I will definitely be going back! I would also recommend pre-booking.

The staff were so excellent in helping us prepare for our time there, helping us come up with a menu specific for the occasion and putting in so much work to get the place looking beautiful! The food was great and the atmosphere was relaxed and inviting. The restaurant area has a more sleek feel to it whereas around the bar there are open log fires and on one side, the bar is uniquely stocked/held up with an array of books - wonderfully unique! We have eaten there on other occasions and the service always feels more personalised than a more "corporate" place - must be a very friendly staff team all round! They are also involved in local initiative such as making record-breaking size pork pies... Definitely eye-catching! Friends of ours had heard that this place, 4-5 years back didn't have a good reputation... From our experiences the change in ownership/management has definitely pulled off a masterstroke!

The breakfast room had a lovely view of the turn in the canal. You can easily walk into Nottingham centre along the canal too, where you can get to the cool bars that are on the canal. If you go along canal the opposite way you will meet the Trent river and have a smashing view of Notts Forests City grounds. It's a nice walk too, during which we saw a family of Canada Geese. I guess it'd be a pretty handy hotel for the of Notts Forests games, as well as any of the cricket games at Trent Bridge.

If you want to sip a drink in salubrious, beautiful surroundings, you've come to the right place. However, it appears that history has a hefty price tag - two small bottles of Corona set us back six quid! Perhaps the reason why we were the only people in the bar apart from two other suckers. And also the reason why much as we enjoyed the beauty of our surroundings, we probably won't return.

Third, a member of staff went far above the call of duty by driving us the ten minute drive home when we were left stranded in Hambleton with no taxi available for more than 1 1/2 hours.
