The gardens themselves are very pretty and great for picnics. They also have an open air swimming pool where the water is warmer than a bath. Tennis courts, bowling green, cricket and a golf club. Then go for a walk in the woodlands and see the tearooms..something of a bygone era. Here too was the Spa and hospital. In the middle of the woods is The Kinema in the Woods situated in the centre of the Pinewoods is one of the treasures of Woodhall Spa and is completely unique. Housed in a converted cricket pavilion, when it opened in 1922 it was one of the first cinemas in Britain. It is the only cinema in the country to employ back projection and also offers regular entertainment on an original Compton Captain Organ. Little shops and cafes in the main street where you can get a meal or a cream tea. The shops are arcaded and look as if they should be at the seaside. Some nice hotels and pubs too. This is Dambuster territory and here they lived. Well worth going for a day out as there is something for every age.

The building has its origins in the 16th century and according to local repute, William Tyndale (he of Bible translation fame) lived there for a while. The pub is a nice comfortable village pub with excellent beer and food from bar snacks to a full restaurant menu. It also offers bed and breakfast and Brisley is centrally located in Norfolk making it an ideal base from which to explore the county.

This was home to Guy Gibson and the Dambuster officers in WWII.Petwood was requisitioned by the RAF during WWII. In the latter stages of the War it was used as the Officers Mess for the famous Dambusters, 617 Squadron, who were then based at nearby RAF Woodhall Spa. (Now a few huts but open to the public and worth a look if you are interested and The Blue Bell Inn, an ancient roadside inn at Tattershall Thorpe, in addition to serving excellent ales and food, has Dambuster connections. On the ceiling can be found signatures of members of 617 Squadron.) In the grounds can be found a dummy practice bouncing bomb, as was used in the Dambusters raid. Inside the hotel, the Squadron Bar is dedicated to 617 Squadron and has memorabilia from the period. Over the bar can be found the branch of a tree. This was found impaled in the fuselage of a Lancaster. The memorial is nearby. Ok this is where you laugh at me. I was doing a craft fair here. At dusk I slipped outside and sat on an old table to have a cigarette. There was a long, high edge by me and a gap then more edge. Across from where I sat a man came. he had grey trousers on and a white shirt with rolled up sleeves and walking at his side a black dog. He smiles, winked and waved at me. I waved and smiled back. he went behind the edge but never passed the gap. I ran to the gap..no-one there. I went inside and told the barman and he said You have seen Guy Gibson. Most of the female staff have..he likes the ladies. I am adding to this for my guide to ghosts in Lincolnshire: A few years ago I was invited, by the RAF, to take my stall to the anniversary of the Dambusters Raids at the Dam in Derbyshire where they used to practice. Many old Lancaster pilots were there and chatted to me about their time in Lincs. One related a spooky story to me though not ghosts of the past.. He said the plane was shot up very badly..he was a gunner and only he and the pilot were still alive. He went to stand behind the pilot as they were lost. Instruments had gone. They saw a river below and rights on the right and realised with relief it was the Humber and the lights were Hull..almost home. Suddenly he saw a huge concrete structure dead ahead and they were about to hit it. He yelled a warning and covered his eyes. They had come through all this and were still going to die. Nothing happened. He opened his eyes and asked the pilot how he had missed it. The pilot had seen nothing. When they built the Humber Bridge, decades later, he realised that was what he had seen that night. The future! Guy Gibsons dog: At Raf Woodhall Spa itelf: A photograph of a group of airmen revealed a black dog standing at the end of the line up that was not spotted at the time by neither the photographer nor any of the pilots. It was later suggested it was 'Nigger', Guy Gibson's pet dog that had been run over a few months before. During the 1980s, a team of engineers working at night spotted a pilot in 'old flying gear' walking along a corridor. One of the team went to investigate, only to find that the pilot had disappeared. And finally: IN DAMBUSTERS FILM Sharp-eyed viewers may spot the ghost of Nigger running through the trees at the end of the film (where Gibson is talking to Wallis at Scampton) - no dog was known to be on the base when the film was made, so the identity of the animal seen on film remains a mystery.

This place was great, full of history...OK I find the Dambusters just awesome! Now for what really…read morematters, the staff was very attentive and eager to assist. They even looked around for a plug converter in the middle of the night so I could charge my electronics. We had dinner in the Dambusters room where right above the bar they have the actual tree that went through one of their planes! Sidetracked again sorry...OK the food was very tasty and the portions were just right. For breakfast you can stick with cereal, juice/coffee, fruits, pastries or you can also order eggs "your way." The rooms weren't small like most hotels in the UK so you definitely don't feel closed in. Plus they have WiFi!

Kind of a difficult place to review, this one. I'll attempt to explain why…read more After a night out drinking, we were a bit too 'happy' to be able to drive back home, so decided to stay here for the night. After a certain time, you can pay via credit card and get a room key without desk staff being on the premises, so we got a few rooms between six of us. Bunk beds.but that was ok, we just wanted a bed for the night. At around £25 per room per night, I suppose you get what you pay for. It didnt take long though, for us to realise that most of the 'ladies of the night' of Peterborough were also using the hotel to get what they paid for, which made for an entertaining night in itself. It served a purpose, we were up and out at around 8 the next morning, and it was preferable to sleeping in a ditch and cheaper than getting a taxi to take us the 30 miles across the fens and then catching the train back to reclaim the cars, but its not the kind of place to consider staying at if you're even halfway sober. Apparently it was recently taken over by Metro Hotels, so perhaps its now a little classier. Do your research ahead of time if you're considering it.

This is by far one of the best hotel's and restaurants in the area. They have a head chef who was…read moretrained in France and he really does offer some of the best food in town. It is very homely and comfortable. In the winter they usually have a real log burning fire and plenty of winter warmers on the menu. The Sunday lunch is also particularly good. The staff are very nice and well trained, especially in the wine and the food. Great place..highly recommend it.
