One of my favourite places to go for a meal. Be warned, though - it gets very busy at Bank holidays and weekends, so it is sometimes best to book a table beforehand.

It is a an attractive Georgian building in the heart of medieval Lincoln, just off the central square between the cathedral and the castle, giving it an excellent location. It also has its own parking across the street, and is at the location where the streets become the pedestrian-focused area. Inside is mixed. It has been updated obviously, in some way good and in some ways not so good. Little of the lobby has retained any old character and the bar area, though adequate, is largely characterless. There is a raised sitting area which is a bit nicer. The old lift, hallways, and rooms thankfully retain more character and charm. We had a large room near the top, looking out the front towards the castle, so it had nice views. The beds were comfortable but not excellent. The room was very large, which was nice, but a bit sparse because of its size. There was some nice old furniture. The bathroom was nice, large, with two sinks, plenty of room, and a good shower/tub. Breakfast was very good. The food was very good and service was good, friendly and trying hard, if a bit overworked by being understaffed. The restaurant was mostly comofrtable and somewhat attractive, but agian a bit bland and characterless from the updating. The bar had a good local cask ale and cocktails (dry martini and manhattan) were done pretty well. In sum, there were several negative points but these were generally small and I would definitely consider staying here again if in town.

We were very pleasantly surprised, however, with the look and feel of the White Hart Hotel, and I would certainly recommend it to anyone staying in the Lincoln area. We were greeted warmly by reception and given a room on the third floor. While there is an elevator, it barely fits one person and a suitcase, and delivers guests to an area of the hotel that is not quite the second floor, but not quite the third either, meaning that there were still several small sets of stairs to climb with luggage. Our room looked modern and fresh, with bright magenta, black and gold stripes adorning the wall and a small flat-screen television in the corner. The bed was perfectly comfortable. I will admit the room was a bit tight, but the view from our window made up for the small space. We overlooked Lincoln Cathedral and were able to hear the bells chiming at various points during the day. The hotel is within walking distance of several pubs and the infamous Steep Hill. Should you choose to stay at the hotel, Room Bar offers a decent selection of beverages, and the hotel restaurant, the Lincoln Grille, was completely adequate for breakfast (though I do wish they would expand their vegetarian offerings). The hotel also offers parking directly across the street in a small garage.

Just across the bridge is the student union and concert venue the Engine Shed, so this hotel really is perfectly placed. Upon arrival we were given cookies, as is the standard in Hilton hotels, and the lady at the desk (can't remember her name unfortunately) demonstrated brilliant customer service. The room was clean and airy, and I honestly think that the bed allowed me the most comfortable sleep I've had in my entire life! I was asleep within seconds of closing my eyes! The bathroom in our room was large which is a nice touch as it's often the case in hotels that they fall on the shorter side.

(Note: the hotel parking was additional but not over the top, if you have GPS follow the route all the way to the hotel, you will have to drive on the pedestrian area for a few. yards, but this is allowed for vehicles that need access). For all you history buffs, this is a great destination, the city center itself, Roman ruins, the Cathedral and Castle including the Magna Carta. Its a 20 minute uphill walk to the Cathedral and Castle from the hotel, so everything you need to see is walkable.

The Lounge/bar offers the ideal environment for pre-dinner drinks and houses a relaxing log fire where we were served drinks and ordered our food before being taken to our table which is a nice touch. The menu is short yet varied and boasts 100% all local produce and locally reared meats. Freshly baked bread with dipping oils were offered complimentary and on the table when we sat down. The food was presented in an artistic fine-dine style and the portion sizes are good and filling. The price is defiantly appropriate to the service and excellent food and I will definitely be going back! I would also recommend pre-booking.

The staff were so excellent in helping us prepare for our time there, helping us come up with a menu specific for the occasion and putting in so much work to get the place looking beautiful! The food was great and the atmosphere was relaxed and inviting. The restaurant area has a more sleek feel to it whereas around the bar there are open log fires and on one side, the bar is uniquely stocked/held up with an array of books - wonderfully unique! We have eaten there on other occasions and the service always feels more personalised than a more "corporate" place - must be a very friendly staff team all round! They are also involved in local initiative such as making record-breaking size pork pies... Definitely eye-catching! Friends of ours had heard that this place, 4-5 years back didn't have a good reputation... From our experiences the change in ownership/management has definitely pulled off a masterstroke!

This was home to Guy Gibson and the Dambuster officers in WWII.Petwood was requisitioned by the RAF during WWII. In the latter stages of the War it was used as the Officers Mess for the famous Dambusters, 617 Squadron, who were then based at nearby RAF Woodhall Spa. (Now a few huts but open to the public and worth a look if you are interested and The Blue Bell Inn, an ancient roadside inn at Tattershall Thorpe, in addition to serving excellent ales and food, has Dambuster connections. On the ceiling can be found signatures of members of 617 Squadron.) In the grounds can be found a dummy practice bouncing bomb, as was used in the Dambusters raid. Inside the hotel, the Squadron Bar is dedicated to 617 Squadron and has memorabilia from the period. Over the bar can be found the branch of a tree. This was found impaled in the fuselage of a Lancaster. The memorial is nearby. Ok this is where you laugh at me. I was doing a craft fair here. At dusk I slipped outside and sat on an old table to have a cigarette. There was a long, high edge by me and a gap then more edge. Across from where I sat a man came. he had grey trousers on and a white shirt with rolled up sleeves and walking at his side a black dog. He smiles, winked and waved at me. I waved and smiled back. he went behind the edge but never passed the gap. I ran to the gap..no-one there. I went inside and told the barman and he said You have seen Guy Gibson. Most of the female staff have..he likes the ladies. I am adding to this for my guide to ghosts in Lincolnshire: A few years ago I was invited, by the RAF, to take my stall to the anniversary of the Dambusters Raids at the Dam in Derbyshire where they used to practice. Many old Lancaster pilots were there and chatted to me about their time in Lincs. One related a spooky story to me though not ghosts of the past.. He said the plane was shot up very badly..he was a gunner and only he and the pilot were still alive. He went to stand behind the pilot as they were lost. Instruments had gone. They saw a river below and rights on the right and realised with relief it was the Humber and the lights were Hull..almost home. Suddenly he saw a huge concrete structure dead ahead and they were about to hit it. He yelled a warning and covered his eyes. They had come through all this and were still going to die. Nothing happened. He opened his eyes and asked the pilot how he had missed it. The pilot had seen nothing. When they built the Humber Bridge, decades later, he realised that was what he had seen that night. The future! Guy Gibsons dog: At Raf Woodhall Spa itelf: A photograph of a group of airmen revealed a black dog standing at the end of the line up that was not spotted at the time by neither the photographer nor any of the pilots. It was later suggested it was 'Nigger', Guy Gibson's pet dog that had been run over a few months before. During the 1980s, a team of engineers working at night spotted a pilot in 'old flying gear' walking along a corridor. One of the team went to investigate, only to find that the pilot had disappeared. And finally: IN DAMBUSTERS FILM Sharp-eyed viewers may spot the ghost of Nigger running through the trees at the end of the film (where Gibson is talking to Wallis at Scampton) - no dog was known to be on the base when the film was made, so the identity of the animal seen on film remains a mystery.
