So much fun and such a great time. I'm terrified of heights and they were really encouraging (although they certainly didn't baby me). Wayne followed me up the ladder and the girls even leaned out with me to grab the bar. It was exhilarating and such an adrenaline rush. I would do it again in a heartbeat. I got a Groupon/LivingSocial/Google Deal for this as part of my 'Year to Try Crazy Things'. Considering my fear of heights, almost complete lack of coordination and avoidance of anything vaguely related to the circus, trapeze lessons definitely fell under Crazy Things. I made plans to go on a weekend with a friend and had a BLAST. A few things: when I originally got the Deal, I remembered seeing the trapeze setup in Del Mar and the close proximity to my house was one of the reasons I got it. By the time I actually USED my Deal, they had closed down the Del Mar location and I had to drive to Escondido. I was warned repeatedly ahead of time to not follow GPS directions, but to follow the instructions on the website. This was excellent advice, considering how 1) I have no sense of direction 2) I am not familiar with Escondido at all and 3) the school seems to be in the back yard of a residential area and I would have never found it without the specific instructions they provided. In short, if you do decide to try Trapeze High, don't use GPS. Trust me. Honestly, the place did not look anything like what I expected and I was a little worried that I had roped someone else into going with me. However, I thought everyone there was very good at what they did. There was no coddling. There was mockery and criticism of form. All of this was acceptable considering there are plenty of ways to hurt yourself if you don't follow instructions. I never felt insulted or in danger--two major priorities that day. I loved my experience. I overcame my fears (temporarily), have video proof that I have successfully been on a trapeze and have one more thing to brag about. I thought the staff was fun and knowledgeable. Dave even discussed poetry with me--unexpected, but welcome. I had an amazing time and plan on going back again. Very, very, very cool way to spend a Saturday morning. The instructors are extremely experienced and explain the steps well. I felt completely safe the entire time I was there. The class starts with a basic description of how to jump and swing, and then they add different types of swings as you build up confidence. We did solo swings for the majority of the class and then finished by being 'caught' by one of the instructors on another trapeze. The hour and a half class flew by! Pro-tip: use the chalk when you're at the top on the platform to save your hands. read more

Please do not be intimidated by the fact the establishment is located behind a mobile home on a dirt lot in the middle of nowhere. If I had judged the book by its cover I wouldn't have gone in and participated in one of the most random and fun experiences of the year. The people are all so nice and friendly in a matter-of-fact way that during my 'lesson' I felt compelled to not disappoint these people I had just met! Surprisingly, after a few swings, you learn a lot and after the first session (1hr?) we nailed swinging off, hanging by our knees, getting caught, and somersaulting out. My friend and I went for our first time and, although I was not as skilled as my friend at attempting all the tricks, I am motivated to go back and nail the stunts. However, for the first class, a beginners class, I felt that they really gave you enough trapeze time to feel like you accomplished a new feat. The ultimate stunt is swinging on the bar, latching your legs to the bar, releasing your hands to be caught by the (experienced) other trapezee and then land in the net after being caught. Very impressive when you consider it's a beginner's class. The owner, David, is a bit bossy and blunt, maybe even harsh but he means well. Let's just say he won't be getting any job offers as a motivational speaker, but the other staff are there to balance him out, his wife included. read more

I just finished my second of 2 classes through the active.com Schwaggle and I must admit, I'm hooked! Dave and the gang are fantastic instructors, and yes, they do yell at you a bit. BUT in their defense, timing is everything in this sport! Trapeze High manages to get you over your fear of hanging out over the platform, amazing yourself by the fact that you just did a back-flip off a trapeze and challenges you to try things you didn't think you can do. The 90-minute class is a whole lotta fun and worth every penny! You will accomplish things in this class you never thought you could - go, enjoy flying through the air with the greatest of ease! read more

I have been to classes here 4ish times now (Im bad with numbers). I am by far not the prettiest thing to look at in the air, I often flat out miss my cues, and sometimes flail around. Even though I am epically bad I always have a good time, the staff always makes me laugh, and I never get hurt (even though I land real funny). Dave is hilarious and is always patient with me. I play on the rings sometimes after class, which in my case of course means the kid rings not the adult ones but no one makes me feel bad about it. I clearly won't be joining the circus anytime soon but I will continue to make a fool of myself at Trapeze High!! read more

My major criticism is that the woman giving directions when you're in the air is really rude and negative. She makes passive aggressive comments to everyone, criticizing what they do wrong as they're doing it. For example, she would tell the person swinging on the trapeze to wait/hold, and if the individual jumped the gun and didn't wait til her command, she would loudly say "that's not waiting!" Then a poor girl was so afraid of doing anything they asked and when she this woman suggested she try a backflip to land on the net, she completely failed and the woman said "that's...not a backflip." I have been a coach and instructor in two sports for 10 years and the worst thing you can do to someone who is learning, is be unnecessarily critical about their effort when they are trying hard. My suspicion is that she is still employed there because she is a family member or family friend. In general, the personalities of their trapeze crew can really come across negatively. We had a great time, and the owner is the best one to interact with. I just wish they had a better attitude towards their customers. read more

I've been doing gymnastics and silks for a while, so this was nothing too different. I loved being in the air, and they made it so easy with the calls. The owner was a great guy. What a rush!! I took my employees here for a team-building outing and we had a blast! The staff was very welcoming, friendly and funny, and always made you feel like your safety was their number one priority. They did a great job of explaining the different positions and commands. Reinforcing notes from below re: my experience: 1. Dave is quirkly, gruff, but very helpful in a drill sergeant sort of way. He will grow on you--there's no mollycoddling here. I agree with sour patch kids example. Support staff also very nice, but you better listen. 2. I liked the carny atmosphere. It was relaxed and fun, more like someone's backyard than a YMCA gym. Actual trapeze structure very professional and full of redundant safety mechanisms. So don't freak out when you are first walking up to the compound :) 3. I can see how a hot day would drain you. Bring lots of your own water and a friend to film you. No frills or extras here--just the focus on the trapeze. 4. This is way more about trust and physics than core strength. If you LOOK AT YOUR HANDS ALWAYS and just listen to the instructions, you cannot help but do what they are teaching. 5. It is not easy, it is WAY up there when you get up there, but I promise the adrenaline will last for a few hours (maybe more) after you conquer your fears. I loved it. I sucked pretty bad at first cuz I didn't listen. I am going back again soon. Have fun, do it. Your everyday problems will pale in comparison to pushing yourself in this new way. read more

The staff was great and the experienced "club flyers" were super nice and supportive as well. Trapeze High was awesome! We went this past weekend and it was great. They train you on what to do before you actually climb the ladder, so you feel confident and know exactly what you are supposed to do for your first swing! The staff made me feel very confident and helped me through the more intricate swings. They are very nice and reassuring! Also, it seems as though they have been doing this for a long time, so they know what they are talking about. Chris is very funny and entertaining! I would agree with the other reviewers that the trapeze class is in the owner's backyard which has a country feel. BUT if you are there for trapeze you won't be bothered by the location at all. I found these guys through Groupon and booked a trapeze class for me and my kids (10 and 12). What to expect: It was a little tricky to find but if you get lost like me then just call them up and they'll get you there! When we arrived we found that it was at the owners house. We made our way in to the back yard and there was a ton of equipment for all their classes. We signed in then promptly get fitted for safety belts and given very rudimentary instructions for the first thing we would be doing. We got to try it a time or two then moved on to the next moves, again, with very basic instruction. At first it's a little unnerving at how little instruction was actually given but it's just one of those things that once you're doing it, it all just flows together and they're shouting instructions at you from the ground so you know what to do. My 10 year old picked it up really fast and got the hang of it right away. I'm not the most limber or light but I could still keep up (though it did take a couple tries!). My oldest has a fear of heights and I can't even get him on a ferris wheel, but he enjoyed himself and even though he sat out a few turns out of fear, he kept coming back. I would highly recommend Trapeze High to anyone of any age! I did however wake up very sore the next morning in the arms, shoulders, and back. So you also get a nice little workout! read more

Have you ever wanted to be 'The man on the flying trapeze?' Then this is the place for you! My girl decided we were going to give this a try and it sounded fun so we scheduled it for Saturday morning. Initially there was some confusion with the scheduling, but they told us to call and sorted it out instantly! If you ever want to fly here just call them directly - they'll make sure you'll be set up properly. When we got there we found that it is a bit off the beaten trail, bit it is well marked so you'll find it easily! Park near the trailers and walk on back beyond more trailers and the house and you'll see... the TRAMPOLINE! Everyone was friendly as they put on your waist harness and provide some safety briefings and instruction. The one thing that will help you out here is to LISTEN. They tell you what to do - and they know what they're doing! My experience: It's up to the platform for the first attempt! Off I went and it was fun! If you've climbed before you'll have inherent trust in the gear and it'll be more fun... but it is still a rush of new things so I wasn't nearly as good as I wanted to be... but then there's always the next ride... My next ride was pretty good and I felt more comfortable, but I knew my brain wasn't fully intact after this one because I couldn't walk on the net very straight after I landed - must have the been all the adrenaline! Next thru teach you how to hang upside down with your knees on the bar - my first time was surprisingly easy so off to the second one to practice this... I floundered. I thought instead of listened to the instructors. I was so pumped up with adrenaline that my ears and my brain were just not engaged - I wasn't doing what they said, I was trying and it was fun, but I was a bit disappointed in my regression. Next it was time to fly again - and I was much worse ... I didn't even get a chance to fly to the other bar. Fortunately I was able to regain my rookie composite and my last flight ended with me grabbing the arms of the guy who caught me as I kept through the air as... ' the man on the flying trapeze!' This was an awesome experience - we'll be going back sometime soon to fly again, and hopefully I'll get more comfortable and get it down! read more

I did my first class last night in Del Mar. It was so much fun and such a rush! I love how they let you dive right into tricks and i felt safe! Everyone was sweet. the only thing that would have given it onr emore start to make5, was that i felt there were too many people in the class. There were experienced ones and then the four new people who signed up for the class. We had to take turns with the ones that i guess are club members. It just made waiting in line kind of boring. For $60 I wanted to go more than i think 5-6 times. I didnt break a sweat or anything, but Im a little sore today! I think they should have mentioned how important it is to stretch too. I didnt stretch well enough (my arms and back) and today im feeling it! But all in all...its a great experience. I would recommend it to young people all the way to older people! I will def be back!! read more

While this is a fun activity for some, the "instruction" part of the class is sadly lacking. The lady on the phone was super nice and got my friend and I in last minute with our groupon. We were excited and didn't know what to expect as we showed up a little early. As you walk up, it literally looks like someone's backyard with trapeze equipment. This didn't effect our opinion of the establishment and the actual trapeze area with the net looked really neat. We signed our waiver and as the clock hit the hour, one of the employees gave us a short crash course in how to stand and position our bodies. I was able to do it on the deck to his satisfaction and then apparently it was time to climb the ladder. There was no demonstration, and a super fast (30 sec?) safety talk and then we were told to "start climbing and don't stop on your way up!". I was the second one up and had little hesitation as heights don't bother me. The employee at the top curtly told me to always keep both hands on the support bar and when my time came, had me get into position with my feet on the edge and my left arm holding the support. I was then told to arch my back but apparently I wasn't doing it correctly as I was told over and over "no, you're not right, arch your back, push your stomach out." I think they assumed I was scared / nervous and i repeatedly told them I needed further instruction as I didn't understand how to do what they were asking better. Again, there was no offer for a visual demonstration which would probably have gone very far in correcting what was wrong. As I'm leaning out, attempting to arch my back to their satisfaction I can feel my back start to cramp up from the awkward position and tension that was starting to build. I told the man I wanted to back down because it hurt and he roughly said "no, it's too late". Finally I heard him mutter "whatever" and was told to step off which I did. Instantly my back began to spasm as they shouted commands at me. I dropped into the net as my back cramped worse. A lady helped me down and I spent the rest of the class sitting out and stretching my back. I'm not blaming the company for the back problem, maybe it's something that would have happened anyway but the attitude of the instructors and very very poor instruction definitely didn't help. I'm not out of shape, by the way. I run half marathons and can hold my own in most recreational sports. This company needs to seriously reevaluate their teaching style and possibly offer "beginner" classes with more demonstrations and a kinder attitude towards those who don't "get it" when explained verbally one time to them. My friend had a good time, but agreed with me on the instruction aspect of the class. It was fun to watch the students who had been attending for a while, so these classes definitely work for some people :) I would very much like to try trapeze again, but not from this establishment. read more

Super fun and physical experience. Bought an Amazon local deal and went with a limo full of ladies for a bachelorette. The initial on-the-ground 'training' was a bit gruff (some girls were put off enough by the instructor that they almost quit then), but if you don't understand the full gist of the instruction, just climb up and learn as you go-- they'll instruct you every step. Staff was always willing to joke and answer questions. Don't go there with an ego or be easily offended. They are trying to keep you safe and make it as fun as possible with their instructions. Don't be put off by the retired circus atmosphere, these people are pretty legit. Was going to upload my own photos, but all the current ones here are exactly what to expect. We were all set to bring a girls birthday party here and spend over $500 doing it. My daughter and I read all the review and saw all the great things people were saying. We decided to drive and check out the facility before booking. I was so disappointed in the appearance of the facility. Safety, I'm sure, is very important to them, but it looked like piles of junk sitting around. We thought we were in the wrong place as we passed homemade hand written signs telling us where to drive. It ended up being in someone's back yard and it was a shock to see how unkept the property is. Oh how we wanted to come, but I couldn't convince my daughter to go through with the party after seeing how unprofessional the facility (backyard) looked. Sorry but we will take our $500 elsewhere. Wuhoo! I planned a trip for 6 of us girls to go do flying trapeze and it was amazing!! I'm an adrenaline junkie so this was right up my alley. With 7 girls I was afraid that we wouldn't have much time each on the trapeze but we did. The instructors are great. They make you feel very comfortable, esp if you have some friends who are a bit squeamish when it comes to heights, fear instead of adrenaline ... etc. They work with you on the ground so you understand how it will work once you get up top. After our first run on the trapeze it was on to learning tricks. Yay! We are looking to do this again next month. It was well worth the drive & price. :) Thanks!! read more

This was by far one of the coolest experiences of my life! I'd never flown on a trapeze before and by the end of the introductory class today I was able to do a knee-hang, let go, and swing with the catcher. Not only were the staff members very helpful and patient, they were very encouraging throughout. The instructions were very clear and we were guided every step of the way; they even adapted to our various ability levels. The most important aspect is that we had lots of fun and it was absolutely worth it. We left the place talking about what an incredible experience it had been. I absolutely love doing this!! I did 2 classes this month and had a blast. The staff were great to work with. Tori and Dave were awesome today. I bought the Zozi deal, which were 2 classes pretty much for the price of one. I highly recommend these classes. I was very nervous the first time, but the second time, I was at ease and confident. My husband was there to cheer me on and took some awesome photos that I will treasure. I think my dance and gymnastics background helped for this, but it is a bit scary when you first get to the platform and grab onto the bar. I learned some new, fun tricks and perfected them today. It really looks better in the photos if you point your toes :) All in all, a wonderful experience and I'm hoping to sign up for some more classes for the summer! read more

Yes, Dave doesn't like it when you get lost. I followed my GPS and got a nice tone from him, but on his behalf he did wequest for me to pull directions from the website, although he never mentioned it was because GPS machines stink at finding his place. I think they're mean and yell at first because they're concerned for your safety. But after a while, when you stat getting it they are sweet in side. Just like a sour patch kid. They sour at first then sweet after. The experience was good and I'm looking forward to going back one day. They even let us try out a couple of the other activities like the tightrope. read more

Quite an experience. I did it to say that "I have gone trapezing in my lifetime" and I would definitely go again. Everyone was really helpful (and nice and funny) and you go up to the platform in cycles so if everyone is diligent about getting up that ladder in an orderly and quick fashion, you can get in tons of swings! It defintely seems that you should be in some decent shape to do this. If you can't even lift a brick, I wouldn't suggest going. It's hard work! TERRIFIC! I bought a groupon that had expired and they were kind enough to honor it. In exchange I brought 3 people with me. It was fun, scary, stressful, and exhilarating all at the same time. The trainers are serious, fun, supportive, yet firm. They actually believe and know anyone can do this. So it can seem that they are disappointed when you don't execute as commanded. It's really incredible because I heard my inner voice telling me, "HELL NO!" but when everyone is doing it and being supportive you just find the courage to literally swing for it. I came here as a staff outing and I only have great things to say about this place. Don't be put off by the set-up being in someone's backyard, it's extremely clean, well-kept and maintained. As an aerialist, I am used to be high up in the air, but I was definitely was not prepared for being at the top of the platform! It was a little scary being up there, but the staff was so kind, warm and encouraging that any fear or apprehension melted away. I also felt completely safe in the hands of the instructors, any fear I had was internal. The bar is well taped, and easy to grip. Harmony even noticed that my palms were a little sweaty and she offered me some chalk. They are all great teachers, with good advice how to improve each time you are on the trapeze. I highly recommend going here! If you're looking for a little adventure and are willing to try a new experience, this is definitely something you should look in to. I was shocked at how much we fit into the first class. I swung from the trapeze a few times, then I went upside down and hung from my knees, did a back flip off the trapeze, then I did the splits upside down, and my grand finale was swinging from my knees and being caught upside down by one of the instructors! I'm not a particularly gifted athlete so I credit the instructors encouraging us to keep us moving and really go for it. I read the other reviews, and from my experience, the instructors were only loud when it came to your safety which I appreciated. I thought the instructors were what made this place amazing! I've never written a review of a business but I feel strongly that this is a place that deserves recognition. It's so much better than 13 seconds and $150 spent on skydiving. I bought this for my boyfriend as birthday gift. I knew he would love it - I assumed I would hate it! My fear of heights makes jumping from a platform and swinging through the air seem so much less enjoyable! But, these people made it so much fun! Everyone was great! I felt safe and encourage and like I was hanging out w a group of friends. By the end of the class we were all drunk on applause and high fives and I personally feel so proud to have done it! I would recommend this to anyone - even girls like me who are afraid of almost everything! read more

Duuuuude. I came here with a group of friends for my birthday celebration and had such an incredible time. The staff is so welcoming, encouraging, and fun! It was terrifying standing on the platform but all that fear was out the window the second I jumped. I had a rough start with it, but was finally able to make the catch by the end of the session. I am compelled to write this review after reading the two negative posts below. My review is based as a father of a 12 year old flyer that has been flying for about 4 years. Trapeze High is an amazing facility with a more amazing staff. We have spent two weeks in San Diego and my daughter has flown 6 or 7 times this trip. This trip alone my daughter has learned more than in the last several months combined and this is due to the amazing staff that wants to teach each flyer to do their best while having fun. I cannot imagine what happened to the posters below but I have never witnessed anything of the sort and by seeing how many local flyers come every day I would be shocked if any of this was true. Their location is indeed in a HUGE backyard with all the equipment that anyone who not only wants to fly but practice or learn tons of circus type tricks. My daughter spent a good amount of time on the rings as she needs to develop upper body strength. It was a blast and now she is begging me to build some stuff in our yard. No way, I will leave that to the pros at Trapeze High!!!! read more

I finally used the Groupon I had for a trapeze lesson for two this weekend, and it was awesome! My boyfriend and I had a blast. Dave and Wayne are great instructors -- nice, patient, funny, and informative. And I didn't catch the woman's name who helped hook us in and take off every time but she was a delight, too -- positive and encouraging and she (literally) gave me the kick I needed to stop being a chicken and jump already! :) The instructors know what they're doing and make you feel safe, and they cater the tricks to your ability level and how comfortable you are. Plus, you can tell that they are passionate about what they're doing and genuinely love it. I would highly recommend taking a class with Trapeze High. read more

I had so much fun here! I've been flying for a few years and love to try out new places, so when I went to San Diego, I had to check out Trapeze High! I was nervous walking in as I didn't know what to expect at this particular rig, but within a few minutes I had been set at ease and was flying high. The people who come and work here are encouraging and supportive. It's a great group, there's no anxiety or insecurity necessary as they focus on what you're doing well and have great input for what you can improved upon. I learned a few new things that I hadn't ever done before, including a great and fun way to do a turn around! Awesome! Thanks, Dave! I got to try traveling rings for the first time and thought the instruction was well done and certainly done in a safe way which puts me at ease suggesting this location for first time flyers. I didn't feel that there were any safety issues what so ever here. I also got to fly out of lines and land in their crazy looking 'air bag' which is ridiculously fun (and a little anxiety inducing the first few times!) I can't wait to go back and fly here again! Awesome experience. It's great for beginners. Ignore what that 2-star review says. He apparently is an idiot and shouldn't be allowed to do reviews when he doesn't even experience the place. Anyways, super fun. All the pros there help you out and get you up to speed. They make it a subconscious experience by telling you what to do as you do it so it becomes flawless. Guys don't be afraid to wear tights, but make sure they are not see-through, because no one wants to "see" what is showing through. I honestly don't think one time is enough, you'll definitely be coming back to this place. Maybe they will rent out one of the mobile homes there to you so you don't have to travel to the place.
