Sometimes you just get lucky. I came home from Texas to visit my little sister Vickie and her husband Pete and stumbled into the coolest little hole-in-the-wall restaurant on D 59 in beautiful Carnarvon, Iowa - population approximately 50 people. We were exploring. The place looked inviting and we were famished. Soon after meeting the proprietors Margaret Gilmore and Kenny Schwanz, and a few of the new ol' regulars from nearby Carroll, Iowa, we had ice cold beer in our hands as we tore ourselves up trying to decide amongst some great selections on the menu. Chicken fried steak, chicken fried chicken, prime rib Philly cheese steak, broasted chicken, shrimp, all kinds of burgers............. I plowed through a great chicken fried chicken, with white cream gravy and mash potatoes. It came with a nice salad bar with fresh lettuce and veggies and a FAB beef, barley and vegetable soup. I sampled Lisa's super cheesy prime rib Philly cheese sandwich with sweet potato fries, and the broasted chicken Pete and Vickie were enjoying with crunchy, tasty skin and the chicken melted in my mouth. Margaret sure knows her way around that kitchen! Her coming from Dallas years ago, I could be persuaded that her chicken fried steak might be equally hearty and "out a sight".
We left fat and sassy with new friends, minimal damage to the pocket book and the knowledge that "I will be back!" The place is clean as a pin, fun and open 7 days a week for breakfast, lunch and supper. Good eats y'all. read more
