Apparently there are a lot of reasons to question whether we should shop at Trader Joe's (food recalls, labor issues, too much plastic packaging, unfair business practices, etc. etc.) and, okay, I cant argue with you about all of that. Show me a completely innocent people-and-community focused national grocery store chain with prices I can afford located within 15 miles of my house and I promise I will shop there more than I shop at TJ's. Okay? I am also not here to tell you that the products are necessarily healthy, but, as a vegetarian there are a greater number of items I can eat here than in any other grocery store at prices that don't make me cringe at checkout. I appreciate the selection of tasty, unique/ ethnic, meatless items, and frozen foods or foods packaged for freshness and convenience, and the friendly staff. read more

I've worked next to this Trader Joe's for almost 6 years and my manager shops there bi weekly to stock the staff fridge. I recently traded my car for an airstream camper van that being said it's my day off and I had several things to do in that plaza and the one I work at connected to it. I finished up and drove over the back parking lot of Trader Joe's to meet my partner and pick up a few things. I arrived at 1:15 and was waiting for him to arrive when a kid with a security jacket comes tapping on my window and proceeded to say I'd been there for hours and that a Trader Joe's employee wanted me to leave because they felt I was loitering. I explained that wasn't the case and I was waiting for my partner to which he said he's gotten several complaints that my vehicle is parked there for hours. I work in the plaza so of course my vehicle is familiar and it's parked there for hours. The kid didn't seem to register any of what I was saying. I'm super offended at how I was treated as a regular customer and as an employee of the business adjacent to them. They obviously looked at my vehicle and made a judgment about me and my business there. I'll be sharing this experience with my manager and the other businesses in the plaza read more

Busy location with no others for around 25 miles north (Lake Oswego) or south (Corvallis). This location is directly across from budget food shop WinCo Foods, further making this area a one stop shop for those in a car. This location was well organized, had a large, clean, private gender neutral restroom and is still offering a demo station after TJs made them optional after COVID. Only strike - I did not see a "new" end cap area. Parking is also a little rough, the landlord needs to repaint lines. read more

If I were king for a day I would require every store selling food to use clear packaging like TJ's. What are they hiding? A ton of space. Why stand in long slow lines when half of what ur buying is air. The other thing is their employees make a decent living and know their products - Especially wine and cheese. Trader Joe's is my family's go-to for groceries. Their food selection is great and we love trying new things at the sample station. A lot of items change with the seasons, so there's always something new and you'll want to stock up on your seasonal favorites. The service is always friendly, the staff really seem to enjoy their jobs and they're happy to chat about the products and help you find what you're looking for. The store itself is clean and well-lit, with fun murals on the walls and paintings on the tops of the end-caps. My kiddo loves looking for Billy the Goat, a cute little goat plushy who is hidden all over the store and finding him earns little ones a prize of stickers and/or a lollipop (if parents say it's ok). Overall, a great place to shop. There are some things they don't carry; since they mostly specialize in food and have only a small toiletries section we often shop elsewhere when we're done at TJ's to pick up the missing odds and ends. Oh! And before I forget, I love browsing their greeting cards. They're $1 each and have great art. read more

I stopped at Trader Joe's because it's nearby and employees are always so kind. On today's trip a woman was in the store without a mask. I talked to two employees and learned they aren't enforcing the mask rule. Most importantly that expresses their complete lack of respect for their employees. I absolutely love Trader Joe's. I just wish I didn't have to drive 40+ minutes to get there. Where I used to live... I could get to many of them in just a matter of minutes. This is one of the smallest stores in the chain I've been to but they have most of the TJ's things I love and the parking here is easy. I don't buy wine or flowers anywhere else - their selection and prices in these 2 categories in particular are outstanding. I'm not a fan of their produce or bread in general. Their toilet paper and tissues are awful. The delightful, inexpensive things you can find in the frozen and candy sections make up for that. 99 cent cards and free coffee (with half and half available!), food samples and really nice employees of all ages - yes they believe in hiring older workers as well as young ones - are other wonderful traditions of TJ's. We're the envy of all of Canada for these stores! I would never be able to do all of my grocery shopping exclusively at a Trader Joe's but I can't imagine not being a regular customer. read more

When I'm home in Oregon, this is the closest Trader Joe's. It's on the main drag in Salem, Commercial, and is a pretty well-stocked shop with everyone's favorites- Joe Joe's, fresh grab and go salads and sandwiches, decidedly unhealthy but yummy cookies, and frozen foods for quick & tasty dinners. The staff has always been friendly and the lines were short. Ample parking at TJs can be hard to find, but this location has a large lot (it's next to a Petco) for multiple businesses. read more

Ran into Traders Joe to grab some flowers to visit ancestor's grave. Did not disappoint, same good quality selection and value as on the East Coast. Good variety too! Haven't been in for awhile, hoping the produce had improved. Purchased bagged, organic broccoli. Couldn't inspect through the bag. Half the broccoli was unusable; yellow and brown "age spots". Also purchased a Greek salad. Only about 1/2 a cup if that of Greek ingredients. Two measly pieces of cucumber and the tiniest bits of tomatoes I have ever seen! The Greek olives tasted off and the rest was lettuce. Won't be back. read more

Smaller store but great parking. The manager is attentive when you ask about low inventory, and replies with updates in friendly and professional manner. I had unexpected company drop in and was able to whip up delicious nachos using TJ's Organic Blue Tortilla Chips, can of TJ's Black Beans, a pkg of cheese, TJ's Pico de Gallo, fresh Avocado/Lime, sour cream and pulled pork. Always easy to grab & go, the crew keep the cash out lines moving thru quickly and efficiently. And if you ask a clerk for help, they stop and walk you over to area of store. Love this place. Love the little cats they have available for a little ones to push. They Have great options during the holiday seasons for treats. As a Hawaii transplant I really love and appreciate Trader Joes' wide selection of affordably priced foods, fresh and frozen. While living in Hawaii I'd purchase at Whole Foods identical items found at TJ but at two and sometimes three times the price so it's fair to say TJ's prices are affordable. I found roasted seaweed (nori) for 99 cents which my kids love, and got some dark chocolate covered almonds, prepacked salad and kale ($1.99), and a bottle of Sauvignon blanc for $2.50. The employees were all friendly, pleasant, and helpful and my kids loved hunting for Mojo Jojo, the cookie store mascot. (When found, kids tell the cashier who calls out "Mojo!" the rest of the crew call out,"Jojo!") they were rewarded with loads of scratch n sniff stickers. Hunting for mojo Jojo made my kids keep quiet(er) and made mommy's shopping trip much more pleasant. I'll be back to stock up on organic frozen fruit for smoothies, coconut oil, and hummus! read more

I have to honestly say the only time I've come here is to stock up on the $3 buck chuck. My wife LOVES that wine, and so I must keep it fully stocked :-D. I don't drink it, so I haven't a clue on how it tastes. I love the quirky stuff I find as I walk the aisles. It's always a treat to come here and check out what is new, especially during the Holidays. My Hubby works down the street so it's nice to come here and then meet him for lunch with my girls. Customer service is great and everything is always in stock. Candy Cane Jojo's is one of our favorites. Also some Peppermint Hot chocolate is delicious too! I get the Organic Pitted Medjool Dates for my Mom, because those are her favorites. My daughters love walking the aisles and picking up their favorites as well. My oldest loves the rice crackers and my youngest loves the coins of the world. read more

I had a scam pulled on me yesterday in this store. A bag of lettuce fell from the top shelf and landed on floor in front of my cart. When I bent down to pick it up, my wallet was stolen from my purses that was in my cart. I didn't notice it missing till about 5 min later when I went to check out. I immediately ran to my car and frantically searched. About 5 min after that, I went to report wallet being stolen. Staff was not very helpful and a few of them acted sketchy. I was told they they don't do incident reports nor check security cameras. While I was on phone with 3 different banks to cancel cards, thieves managed to rack up nearly $6,000 in charges over the period of 1 1/2 hours( one bank had me holding for an hour). I will NEVER shop at this Trader Joe's again as I received very little assistance and just won't feel safe in this store read more

I like this location. There is always plenty parking and the store itself is clean. I like shopping at TJ, by no means do i do my main grocery shopping here but for those little luxuries its very affordable. The staff has always been pleasant to deal with. I usually buy olive oil,spices, cheeses and the likes. Also the clientele here seems more subdued and less rude than some other places i shop. Thats a big bonus. read more

I'm a little mystified by how many reviewers think TJs is an organic vegan GMO free generic healthy foods store. First of all, healthy food is the responsibility of the eater. No one should expect to go into a store, buy anything on the shelves, and expect to be eating healthy. Secondly, since I discovered TJs in the mid-eighties, it has always been, if anything, more of an imported and gourmet foods store. It has since evolved into the ultimate bachelor shopping experience. Lots of single serving items, plenty of guilt-laden snack foods and just enough awareness and naturalness to promote a better planet. But they still have quality and imported foods for a deal. You have to be a savvy shopper, just like at any other store, to get the most out of Trader Joe's. There are so many incredible deals here. Organic Italian pasta for the same price or less as non-organic American pasta at Safeway. Real French mustard for a fraction of the price. Same with mayo made with whole eggs. Spices, curry paste, canned beans, tomato paste and sundried tomatoes are all a steal here compared to any other grocery store (except Costco where you would be forced to buy 10 times more than you need). That whole aisle is a deal. Also on that row are the oils. If you follow food news, you'll know the mess olive oils are in these days. Big distributors, like Costco, are selling oil labeled olive oil that is as little as 40% olive. It's advised to buy only oil with a single country of origin: Spain, Italy, California. And TJs has that at a great price. Incredible tasting oils. Coconut oil. Coconut milk. Have you seen how expensive coconut milk in a can is at a regular grocery store? If you don't have an Asian grocery nearby and you cook ethnic food, seriously, TJs has the deals. Produce I mostly skip. Too much packaging. Though it is awfully convenient around Thanksgiving to buy pre-cleaned and cut veggies. Nuts are about the same per pound as other stores but they have a great selection. Same with dried fruits. I get my steel cut oats here for great price. Dairy is a little cheaper -- especially for organic milk and yogurt and butter. I stock up on butter. And you can get grassfed Kerry Gold butter here. Eggs are dollars cheaper than other places but I get farm fresh so I don't buy them here. Frozen foods are about the same except that in most grocery stores you can't even GET organic frozen veggies. Chocolate is way cheaper here, especially imported Swiss chocolate. Yes, there are plenty of highly fabricated snack foods here with a disgusting list of chemical ingredients, corn syrup and palm oils, and no, I don't think they used to sell that crap but I don't buy it. Then there are the cheeses. Now I love cheese and I don't buy as much of it as I'd like but unless you're buying in bulk at Costco, you can't get imported or gourmet cheeses ANYWHERE for the prices Trader Joe's has. That doesn't mean there aren't some expensive ones. Again, you have to know your prices and know what it costs other places. I'm in love with the raw cheddar cheese. I've never seen it anywhere else. Danish blue, Roquefort and Gorgonzola, yes they're three countries' versions of the same cheese but they have them all and they're all fantastic. They have wine deals. If you compare the exact same wines from TJs to other stores, you'll see that they are often dollars cheaper. And they have more great wines for under $10 than anywhere else. I was recently at a market that didn't have a bottle of wine for cheaper that $16! You don't have to get Two Buck Chuck to get a good deal on wine. I never fail to get the all natural laundry and dish detergents. The all natural versions at grocery stores are either owned by Clorox or are uber expensive still laden with chemicals brands like Method. The ones at TJs are simple with very few ingredients, a very mild natural fragrance, and super concentrated. And they aren't that much more -- if at all -- than the toxic stuff. On a road trip, there's nowhere better to stop than Trader Joe's for a sandwich, chips or veggies and a drink. It's fast and cheap and always good. I don't eat ready made food on a regular basis but I still prefer theirs to anyone else. I used to frequent the Corvallis store but have taken to shopping at this one on the way to or from Portland. It's a big store -- which is why it's never crowded -- and easy to navigate. The staff here is as helpful and friendly as any other store. They answer questions about products, help you find things and check you out quickly. Another thing I love about this place is that they'll take anything back, no questions asked. I really can't fathom judging a place by what the employees look like. They do their jobs and after several dozen visits here, I have no complaints. read more

I have been 9 times and I will go 9 more before labor day. South Salem really needed TJ's. In the latest Sunset there was an article about the owner (Joe Coulombe) being introduced to "jug wine" by his wife's family. (they lived on a professors salary) They would go to a winery and get these jugs for $1. Thank the lord for Charles Shaw 2 Buck Chuck. His MIL also taught him to cook with olive oil. He started learning about good food and wine. He attributed Trader Joe's basic objective-- making good food affordable to teachers like his MIL... educated but underpaid. It's not your one stop shop for everything, but I have found some great dinners/lunches/marinated fish (less sodium too) in the frozen section that are great for working parents. I am a frugal shopper and instead of buying generic brands at other stores, I am paying similar prices for food with better ingredients at TJ's. The produce is great. The help is super friendly and (weird) helpful? Pros: healthier options, good prices, they bag for you, charles shaw is actually really great wine, nice parking lot Cons: it's typically packed and hard to get around people without my toddler ripping stuff off the shelves, the meat selection is small This place makes my heart sing. They yelled at a young girl and her SERVICE dog. The manager came out and told a customer to not come back again with her service dog. The girl had the dog wearing a service dog vest and was a tiny dog. The poor girl left in tears and can't believe someone would treat a disabled customer this way. I'll bet this place packs up and tears out of Salem within a year. Unlike the rest of Salem, I waited until the "newness" wore off to visit. It was dead, despite the fact that I only waited four days. This fact didn't surprise me, as Salem isn't the kind of city that supports new business. The lack of attention that TJ's is getting doesn't sadden me, though, as I think the store sucks. I went in hoping to God that the store might have at least one thing that would interest me. It didn't. The prices here for mediocre, premade food are astounding. I'm sorry, but when I think 'organic' and 'fresh' I don't imagine prepackaged or frozen food with the TJ's logo. I hate to say it, but Lifesource is a far better option. Not only is their produce section far better, but nearly all of their products support local, sustainable farmers and businesses. TJ's, on the other hand, is more like an organic mini-mart, with their premade burritos and ready-to-eat merchandise. read more
