Dope staff, they all chillin and vibin. They require you to wear a mask to shop there, at this point though everyone should do that. Don't be a rude ass person because you have to wear a cloth over your face while you get your chocolate bars and soda. There's way worse things in life than being uncomfortable for a few minutes. Most of the people that shop here and complain about the Pandemic need to reevaluate their life, and understand that we're all in this together whether you like it or not. Also like just chill, it's not the cashiers fault your mom never loved you as a child. They're doing their best in all of this. Went for a couple things after work as this store is on the way and thought it would be simple as need fresh veg. and really didn't want to go too far out of my way. The cashier was super nice, however the other employees couldn't care less about the customers or the product. Picked up one tomato and the bottom was completely molded into mush - got a couple things at incredibly high cost. Next time I'll drive the little bit up or down commercial to another store. read more

Professional shopper here. I had a run to Natural Grocers today, and I wish I could say it was a good experience. When I needed help, I had to wait for the cashiers to finish their conversation before I could ask about the location of several items. I was given very basic directions, but no one seemed genuinely interested in assisting me. When I finally finished my shop, the cashier was, again, uninterested in any kind of customer satisfaction. She scanned too fast (a strange complaint, I realize,) letting my items pile up on the end of the counter while I struggled to find boxes and try to keep my order straight and uncrushed. Possibly the worst part was I became COMPLETELY INVISIBLE as soon as my payment was completed. An off-handed "have a good day" and my receipt laid on top of the pile, and I was dismissed. As I said at the beginning, I am a professional shopper. I tend to have somewhat higher expectations for customer service than most, and I'm also pretty forgiving when I see things are busy. It wasn't busy. This was apathetic customer service, at best. I won't be shopping here again, professionally or personally. read more

I love Natural Grocers, you can really find some unique and specialty items here. I'm not a regular, but I pop in when I'm looking for certain brands. I used to shop at this chain when I lived in Portland as well. Unfortunately here at the Salem location, I've come across a lot of expired items still on the shelves or items that's a week or so out from expiring and they are still at full price. Yesterday I went in and bought a box of oatmeal from a certain brand I was looking for. As I was walking out I realized it had expired a month ago. I turned around and mentioned it to the cashier and she quickly called someone to the front to grab me a new box. Unfortunately, EVERY box of that brand and every flavor, was expired. They had 6-8 boxes of the one brand sitting on the shelf expired. I also started to buy salad dressing and noticed every bottle of the flavor I wanted was a week away from expiring, so I passed it up. Hopefully, IF they read these... that make it someone's daily or weekly task to go through dates on their shelves. read more

I was in the store this morning. There was no greeter. There was a woman with an about 7 year old child shopping -- neither with mask. There was a man in his 20s with a mask only covering his mouth. Neither of these are compliant with Oregon law. Other stores in Salem absolutely require masks and provide one if you forgot yours. Natural Grocers has Instacart, so people who supposedly cannot wear masks can still get groceries,etc. from this store. The person at the Salem store said "Home Office" (in Colorado) told them not to confront customers without masks. However, businesses in Oregon are required the following according to the Oregon Health Authority: "Masks, face shields and face coverings are currently required statewide for offices and indoor public spaces (for example, grocery stores, pharmacies, public transit, personal services providers, restaurants, bars, retail stores, and more). In addition, face coverings are required in outdoor public spaces when physical distancing is not possible. Children age 5 and up are required to wear a face covering. People with a disability or medical condition may request accommodation from the business if they cannot wear one." The store web site states: Health & Safety Measures Masks required -Social distancing enforced This is BS. They are not requiring masks. The accommodation is --- use instacart, or have someone else do your shopping. Or go to the store with a mask over both nose and mouth. At this point, I will NOT be going back to this store as long as they flagrantly violate Oregon public health regulations. It pains me to write this, especially with so many old-age thinkers that believe "...free-range/natural/green save-the-world/organic thing is largely salesmanship" out there, but I have to admit Natural Grocers sucks, even if for other reasons. Think Lifesource with more vitamins. Same small boring produce section, same organic products, and same employee absent-ness. The one thing that really annoys me, though, is that so much of their produce is from Mexico. Organic or no, that's an awful long way for grapes to travel. And the price for organic Jalapenos? A whopping $6/lb! I'll take my chances with the non-organic but also from Mexico Jalapenos from Winco. Lifesource, Trader Joe's, and Natural Grocers all need to be wiped out and replaced with one amazing Whole Foods. read more

Some things I found were way overpriced compared to even just Fred Meyers. But other things were a steal compared to Fred Meyers. It's really hit or miss on the prices. I found the service was great, almost too great because I had 3 different employees ask me if I was ok in my short 15 minutes at the store. My mother and I looked through the produce and I didn't see any produce from Mexico although I am sure there was some. Most everything I saw had the From USA box marked. We usually can't afford to shop at stores like this but in my experience it was just as nice if not nicer than it's competitors down the street. A lot less crowded as well. We will definitely be back for a few of those items that were far cheaper here than we have found elsewhere though. read more

I'll say this first, I like some of what they sell. I especially appreciate their meat section which has plenty of products I haven't found elsewhere in Salem. However, I'm tired of the employees there. There are a good few that are nice and helpful, but 3/4 times I get someone who's cold, rude, or just ignores me like I'm a ghost. I didn't go here often in the past and now I'm going to avoid it unless I'm desperate for one of their unique products. read more

The cashier who helped me today was beyond rude. I realize that we all have off days but she very politely finished her conversation with the woman ahead of me, chatting in length about vitamins they each take. She carelessly scanned my items as part of her order and had the audacity to be short with me when I said they were in fact my 2 items...then told me to pull my mask up--apparently she felt it wasn't high enough on my nose even though it clearly covered my nostrils. Apparently she thinks she is the mask police...interesting that a seemingly new age type of human is just an ORDER FOLLOWER....sad reality. Verdict is still out on Natural Grocers. I've been trying to write this review for a few days and have been finding it difficult for some reason. I'm just not sure about this place. I feel like they're doing too much with too little stock. They have produce, vitamins, supplements, frozen meats, soaps, oils, the list goes on. But really, there are only sparse selections of each of these millions of sections. I feel like they are doing too much, with too little at the same time. I dislike that most meats are frozen, even if they are grass fed with no nitrates. Again, I'm still not 100% behind this rating, but it will do for now. Just remember to bring your bags! read more

Addendum to below: Given the comments about their lack of an open bulk section, I wanted to post how that is a plus for me. I appreciate that NG packages and seals their bulk foods earlier in their distribution system, and helps customers avoid the open bulk issues of unseen molds, fungi, and the leavings from lax customers who handle the open bulk products. I like their store as a backup when I can't find local organic produce at Lifesource or Roth's. Produce, dairy, and meat are from national/international sources, and I prefer to support local farmers which I can myself review for their growing standards. They also unfortunately carry large corporate "organic" producers who are diluting the organic standards to make their lesser-quality products more "affordable." Yet, something halfway safer than the general public food supply is better than the Round-up infused supply chains. read more

This store is so similar to LifeSource in Salem Oregon but a little bit different. They do sell larger bags of all different types of grains and flours. A wide selection of herbal teas and other equipment. A nice selection of Frozen items as well and fresh as well too. I suggest you come by and take a look you'll probably find something you're really like here I come here to buy different types of Tea's. read more

I have a number of allergies to different foods and when I shop here I always find things I can eat. :-) The staff is very friendly and helpful and I'm approached every time I'm shopping to see if I need help. They have a huge selection of supplements and many of the products can't be found anywhere else in town (that I know of). read more

The prices here for gluten free items are the most reasonable in South Salem. I do most of my shopping at Winco and come here for organics and meats. Its much less expensive than the other natural store in South Salem, but with a slightly smaller selection and no deli /pizza. read more

i was happy to see that Natural Grocers, Salem was offering online ordering w/delivery during this Covid-19 crisis. I was astounded when my $89.00 order was charged over $13.00 in additional fees...service fee, delivery fee and tip all of which increased with each item I added. When I called the store regarding these arbitrary fees, I was told it wasn't their problem and that it was Instacart despite being ordered from their...Natual Grocers website. All in all, the people I spoke with on the phone were not helpful, understanding or accountable for this practice and the exploitative nature of these fees during this Covid crisis. I have ordered from other stores in the community and no one is charging these excessive fees. Under the laid back appearance of Natural Grocers are cut throats who could care less for their customers, especially those with limited incomes suffering under this Crisis. read more

Although quite a bit of products aren't local I was excited to find exactly what I was looking for. The staff is extremely helpful and knew their products well. One experience I had was when I purchased a sleep aid but unfortunately had a bad reaction to it every night I tried it, so I talked to the employees about it and they told me I could bring back what was left and exchange it for another one of their products. The other product they recommended worked like a charm and after 7 years of restless sleep I am able to sleep peacefully sound. read more

finally made it to the new location. i was pretty surprised (in a good way) in the way of selection of products. reasonably priced as well! if you need a supplement, this is the place to go...as they have every supplement under the sun. the organization though of the supplements is hard to navigate...as you're constantly searching. inside, you'll find a produce section (small), meats, and vegan products. they also have dry goods, etc. it's rather large inside...which was again, surprising. they don't have a salad bar, or freshly prepared foods....although the place could house one. they have a huge "beauty" section. so why not 5 stars? you aren't provided with a grocery bag...so don't forget to bring your own. i find this pretty stupid and pretentious. whatever. worth a stop if you're in south salem. read more

If you are bent on nourishing your family with organic non GMO food then you must add this stop to your shopping list. Okay for one I am a mother of a just turned two year old. Keeping track of my carted items and chasing after or entertaining my child can be pretty difficult when shopping. Secondly I hate large grocery stores where you have to walk for miles while navigating pedestrian traffic and dodging oncoming shopping carts. At 9 am you will have the store mostly to yourself... So you can quickly get what you need into your cart and not be worrying that everyone is watching your child have a little tantrum while you are trying to keep your place in line at checkout. Also the staff are always super friendly and often offer a sticker or treat to keep my daughter happy or just sympathize by telling me a story about taking their children shopping. The prices are what you would expect for organic but generally lower than Life Source and Safeway for organic. My only negative is that they don't have unpackaged bulk and their meat selection is limited and more expensive than the other stores I frequent. read more

The assortment of products is good and staff are friendly. One caution is their "bulk" products. Most, if not all, of their prepacked products are raw, the corporate suppresses nutrition information, such as Certificates of Analyses. That would tell you the amount of heavy metals and bacteria / fungi / mold (even pathogenic) in a product. It seems they don't check and not treat against mold. The produce section is small. The vitamin section is 3 to 4 times what you see at Portland's largest New Seasons (or any Whole Foods). Tons of bath/beauty products, and literally 3 rows filled with beverages, mainly single serving beverages. It's a strange little (big) store. read more
