Store 1935 5660 Commercial St Salem, Oregon Dear: Safeway I wanted to bring some unethical procedures that are occurring at my local store. I was helped by clerk Sheryl on 12/12/2025. She turns the keypad in her direction and give herself a perfect score on assistance. She never showed the screen to me. I asked why she would do that and her response was she'll get in trouble and written up from management if she doesn't. I asked why not provide good customer service and I'd happily give you 4-5 stars. She proceeded to tell me that the last time I brought it up to her manger he never talked to her about it. She didn't get it in trouble because the orders came from them. She then ended the conversation with "so there" and smaked her lips. She said, " you can tell who you want, nothing is going to happen ". I'm asking you Safeway is that how you conduct business. Is that the type of management staff you want to represent your company. I'd like follow up and feedback on the changes you'll be making at that store. Also, she's not the only cashier that scores themselves. This has been going on for over a year. We need to bring back ethical grocery store, so they actually provide excellent customer service and not false numbers for their store to the higher ups. I'll be waiting for a response. Bridget was incredibly condescending and racist. She was the manager on duty. I needed a price fixed and she not only made us walk back to where the item came from to show us that the price was "correct".. when she saw that we were right, she refused to help with our refund and told us to return tomorrow. read more

Safeway - Grocery Near Me - Salem, Oregon

Safeway on Center Street is the only grocery store that serves inner city Salem. I very much appreciate the fact they chose to stay in inner Salem. Yes, there is a great variety of people, and a small parking lot...but it is in inner Salem. If you want a big parking lot you can drive out to the bigger grocery stores on the edge of town. For those of us that live in inner Salem, in a very nice neighborhood, I appreciate being able to walk to a grocery store! Keep up the good work, Safeway! P.S. The worst Safeway in town . The women cashiers were so rude that I will not come back here to shop .. I will go to another location Not sure if they hate their job or what.. but the way they were treating customers was uncalled for. Then another employee was out in front with leaf blower and blowing crap everywhere as people tried to walk in store . What is wrong with these workers ??? read more

May 6th update on my Yelp review. Changed to 4 stars! Initially, after speaking with Siri in the floral dept. I was pretty upset and angry about her lack of interest in any resolution, or concern for the condition of the floral arrangement when it arrived. But the Manager Sarah deserves a 5 star review in the way she managed the complaint and resolved the problem. She was kind and understanding, thru my anger and frustration and committed to making sure that I was 100% satisfied with the service. When a new bouquet arrived this afternoon, it was PERFECT! Stunning! Sarah went above and beyond to provide excellent customer service in the face of a pretty nasty review and literally prevented a dedicated Safeway Shopper from spending money elsewhere. Sarah has always been super kind to the customers and I am really glad Safeway has her to represent the organization. She should provide lessons in demonstrating excellent customer service. That girl deserves a raise!!! ___________________________________________________________ My sweet sister just sent a big bouquet of flowers to me for mothers day! Such a thoughtful gesture, and no doubt expensive!!! Unfortunately, when they arrived from the store (which is less than a mile from my house) the bouquet looked like it had been plucked directly from the tombstone of the Crypt Keeper! Never in my life have I seen such a pathetic mess of broken and dying flowers delivered. The pink rose petals were brown and dying, the lilies were broken and bruised, there were stems without any flower heads in the arrangement and some of the dead, "greenery" was black. When I immediately called Safeway to try and resolve the issue "Siri" told me that she was the one who created the floral arrangement and It looked "fine" when it left Safeway. I was then told if I wanted a refund, I would have to contact FTD. FTD obviously is not the party responsible for the quality of the flowers. She told me she made the arrangement herself and it was perfect when she gave it to "door dash" for delivery and then tried to pawn the condition of the flowers and the responsibility off on them. Very pleased with my sisters thoughtfulness, EXTREMELY disappointed that Safeway does not value their customers and would drop such an embarrassing pile of crap on somebody's doorstep! read more

VERY BAD CUSTOMER SERVICE! I Bought ube buns at the deli shop and asked the attendant to warm a couple of buns for my lunch. And just like that they don't have time to warm it up. Surprisingly, I heard it was the "manager" of the deli who was so lazy to do it. I felt so discriminated. The employees at this store appear to have a serious level of animosity toward their customers. I stood at the sandwich counter at the deli for 5 minutes. There were 7 employees there. One was helping another customer. One was cooking. They all looked at me (all 7 - no, not at the same time...) and made eye contact and several just walked away. No one said a single thing to me so I left. Clearly, management has made some seriously bad hires. Particularly in the time of COVID I would think people would not want to lose their job and would step UP the customer service, not ignore it. This is the last time I go there and I would suggest that unless you want to be treated like garbage, you find another place too. read more

COVID safety precautions are terrible here. Checker had his mask below his nose. He asked me how I was doing and I said "I'd be doing a lot better if you had your nose covered by your mask". He just shrugged and said masks are uncomfortable. I totally get that, but if we all wore masks and wore them correctly over our mouth and nose we could kick this pandemic sooner. He did not pull up his mask. As I walked out, I passed the staff break room. The door was open and an employee was in there taking a break with her mask off. *Sigh*. Safeway, how about you do better and live up to your name? Hold your staff accountable and please post signs out front saying "Masks must be worn over mouth and nose at all times". read more

It only gets 3 stars because the grocery part has great customer service. The selection of meat isn't always very big. But I still shop here because of the customer service. The pharmacy department is awful, though. They do not have good customer service, the wait time is horrible and that's even if you have it sent electronically... I've waited a few hours before heading there in hopes they'd fill it and I may as well have just dropped a paper prescription off and it generally takes a long time for them to fill it. read more

This store is A-OK, it's close to home, biking and walking distance, on my route home from errands, rehearsals, etc. It is a grocery store that has all of the basics but not a lot of frills or anything that might be considered out of the ordinary. It's one of my regular places for stocking up on the staples. Typically come in here later in the evening on my way home from rehearsals and staff is always helpful and friendly, close to Willamette University so get a lot of student traffic those hours as well with an eclectic mix of other urban Salem dwellers. read more

Unfortunately it is very sketchy at best, the homeless population is large and rampant in the area. The employees are just as sketchy and despite the manager giving it her best effort to keep professional employees, they make it as hard as possible. The restrooms are never clean, and the lines are typically long. Corporate should send help! read more

This is my go to grocery store! Although they are smaller than some Safeways I love the product selection and friendly staff. We are lucky to have them in downtown Salem. I don't understand the poor reviews - I've been shopping here for over 7 years and have had nothing but great experiences. Yes, you sometimes need to deal with the homeless folks who seem to congregate here or on the sidewalk next to them, but that is not Safeway's fault - that is the City of Salem. And if you guys want to see real homeless issues go to a big city like San Francisco or even Portland! read more

This pharmacy is horrible and getting worse by the day. It used to be much better with customer service and wait times. Several times I have ordered refills through the automated line and it said the medication would be ready by a certain time and 2 days later I'm told I need to wait an hour to get medication. Then after waiting for an hour they gave me medication only to discover that they didn't include one medication that was needed ASAP. The website is even worse. You can't use the site for medication stuff because it doesn't work. I would think that a store as popular and well known as Safeway would have a functioning website......NO!! They need to get their stuff and together or replace whomever is in charge of the pharmacy Dept. I'm seriously considering moving prescriptions to different pharmacy. Also, the manager Patti is not very nice when talking with the public. She's very nasty in her communication and doesn't seem to be someone that would represent Safeway. I go into this store and I picked up my meds and they put them in a free bag, I picked up a donut and they give you a free bag to put it in, I picked some Mushrooms and you get a free bag. I go to check out with about $200. in products and they do not offer bags, fact is you have to walk around and beg a Safeway employee for a bag. When I finely find a person that has bags they want .05 cents each on a bag that cost the store 2 cents. But this store tells me they can not afford to give away bags any more. OKay, so it was a better business for this store to lose this sale, lose me forever as a paying customer, and pay an employee about $18.00 an hour to put all the stuff back on the shelf VS giving out 20 cents in bags that they were giving away a few weeks ago.. I go to this Safeway all the time, and it is nice, but I am giving a low rating due to the pharmacy. I am new to Salem, and I have needed 4 medications filled since I've come here. I chose this Safeway pharmacy because I am there at least once a week. Each time I have tried to get something filled, there has been an issue. I get that things happen, and I don't write negative Yelp! reviews for those. But it seems like the system in place to support customers do not logistically work out for the workers in the pharmacy. It is frustrating renewing a prescription over the phone, being told it will be ready by 5, and then show up at 5:15 with the hopes of quickly grabbing it and being told it will take 15 minutes. And not just once--each and every time I've come here. read more

I went to grab a sandwich and was very underwhelmed by my Deli experience. 1. Deli worker seemed like she hated her life and that reflected in her sandwich making. Who makes a sandwich without asking if the customer wants condiments? "Yes, please make me a the driest sandwich known to man," said no one ever. When I did ask for some, she just put it on one side of the bread? Then she proceeded to smash on toppings without any care to what the sandwich actually looks like. I ended up with a wad of bread and meat with one slice of cheese because one slice apparently is the default. I know this isn't Panera or Whole Foods but have a little pride in your job and product. read more

Never enough check out lanes at this store. They state that if more than 3 people in line they open a new lane. WRONG. You have to chase down an employee to request that they open a new check out lane. My experience was the additional checker had attitude and didn't want to really help customers. They towed my car! I was on a lunch break, and AM A PAYING CUSTOMER! I drive here for lunch, eat my lunch and take a nice walk. NEVER GO AGAIN, I had to pay $400 dollars for my car, walk 2 miles, and come home late to my toddler. I am crushed, bad day, very expensive, and again, illegal towing!! I don't have the money I don't know what I will do for rent, and I did nothing wrong. And Safeway condones this action! I have seen other people get towed while legally parked for less than an hour. I love going to this Safeway because the staff are all the friendliest I've seen. At prime time (weekday nights from 5-7) there are usually lines to check out, but the cashiers are all still smiling and happy to greet you. I had a problem here using the new stupid Bottle Drop recycling card redemption, and the on-duty manager was super helpful and figured out how to credit the redemption to my groceries. The west salem Safeway is bigger, and a little nicer on the inside, but they aren't as friendly. read more

I have used their delivery in the past and they are never on time in their time frames scheduled... but I received my groceries.. and was happy enough. Not any more!! Have scheduled two days in a row for groceries with two of the same emails stating due to unforeseen circumstances my delivery's have been canceled. Offers a link to reorder in the next 24 hours that leads to a dead end page that tells me my order has expired. This is only 15 minutes after my time stamped email of cancelation. Called customer service and he tells me he has no explanation or sorry even as to why I have been canceled two days in a row... and wants me to re order my entire order Again... for the third time ... from scratch... due to their dead end link... reads to me out loud the link since he's confirmed the one I have is not valid. But can't and Won't assure me this delivery will come. He's got no reason as to why my two deliveries haven't arrived... or an apology!!! Dead awkward silence on the phone is what I got after why.... In today's days of stores offering services due to limited contact in public... we should be able to depend on the store offering the services at least with an apology for two repeat cancelations!!! I'm sorry to leave a bad review, but this Safeway has become a glorified Walgreens. It's quite small for modern day grocery stores and even though it looks up to date in terms of design, depending on the time of day it's difficult to navigate the isles because of so many shoppers. At night it feels pretty dangerous. All the hipsters and homeless come out and I'm not knocking the latter because it's a sad sign of the economy and deterioration of our society. Truthfully it does feel pretty sketchy the later in the day it becomes. I do like the deli and I'm always appreciative of a Starbucks. read more

I think 3 stars is pretty fair...I wish I could give it more stars because I actually come here pretty frequently. The have a great floral department...I always go to the starbucks here & thats pretty convienent. I also love the deli section, they have awesome sandwiches !!! The not so great things about this store..They always seem to be out of panini bread, today included.There are ALWAYS shady people in the parking lot or standing/laying/sitting by the doors, kind of scary to walk by them. This is going to sound crazy but atleast 2 or 3 times myself or my family has been there, people have ran out with arms full of merchandise. Once when they this happened it almost caused an accident in the parking lot when they were driving away. I think its safe to say they need to look into hiring some sort of security...its pretty ridiculous..Especially for the people actually paying for their items !!!! read more

Low rating because of deli. Been consistent here for about two months and the deli is always horribly shortstaffed, resulting in waiting 10-15 minutes before you get helped. Not to mention they don't seem to even try to keep track of the order of people waiting. So if you're a soulless state employee like myself and you've been waiting for 15 minutes and they turn to help the person who showed up 30 seconds ago, it will send you into an eyebrow-furrowing hostile mood. Or maybe that's just me. Another thing that prompts the eyebrow furrowing is when I waited for 15 minutes to get a pizza stick only to get out to my car and find that it is charred past being edible and its not worth the 1.00 to wait another 15 minutes for a pizza stock. This has happened twice now. The rest of the store is decent. Can't say it's any more or less great than any other Safeway. read more

When I was in college I called this place ghetto Safeway...cuz it pretty much was. Then they remodeled and made it look all nice. That was cool...I kinda missed ghetto Safeway though. No unreasonable complaints. My only issue with this location is the amount of homeless people/loiterers outside the store. It's not a big deal to me since I've personally never been asked for money. However I have seen them asking people walking in the store for,"a light". Sure it may be annoying at times but what do you expect. It's not an amazing neighborhood. Things like this happen. The world isn't perfect. Your reviews should be based on how satisfactory the customer support is,or how great of a selection the store has not how many people occupy the area outside the store. Which,by the way the customer service is great. The employees are always willing to help you find something you're looking for with a friendly attitude and often strike up conversations with customers. The deli crew here is fantastic. The manager Indigo is super friendly and helpful. More than once I have called in with complicated or last-minute orders, and the crew at the deli is almost always able to accommodate. That's a big deal, given how busy this Safeway is during the day. Four stars just because there are always homeless people loitering here, inside and out. read more

For a food-market, I was not impressed. A good selection of dry goods- and if you need a light beer or wine the prices were great. However, we needed food for our hotel that lacked a microwave- so any dry good would apply. We decided to get milk, cereal, and bread. Light needed items to pass a 1 night lack of microwave. We got these items quick and without complaint, but we then decided to locate the plastic utensils- which we asked over 4 employees to locate- each directed us to a different aisle in the market. After wasting our time we were informed by the deli counter worker that they did not have "paper goods" which included plastic utensils. We even looked for replacements such as a baby spoon, serving spoons, or measuring spoons. All which the store lacked. Not a huge deal- but any other market ive been to has had at least a "party pack" so I can eat on the road if needed. read more
